San Iñigo is a jewel of the Caribbean, a playground paradise for the foreign elite, a hell for unfortunate locals. For recent Princeton grad Dan Shedrick, San Iñigo promises the fulfillment of too many desires.

Dan hires on at a powerful American firm as a junior architect, but still finds time for tennis, booze, a reckless affair with the sexy wife of a resort owner — even a bit of reconnaissance for the U.S. cultural attaché. But soon he discovers that nothing on San Iñigo is without consequence. When a much-loved local radio personality is found on a beach with his head blown off, Dan's lover becomes a suspect. And not long after his foray into espionage, he's dragged away on a brutal journey into the heart of darkness.

Buffeted by aggression, depraved ritual, and personal betrayal, Dan discovers fierce truths about San Iñigo … and himself. In the island's forbidding mountain jungle, his life goes up in flames — a deadly inferno that will forever change him, if he survives at all.

Review: Crash & Burn by Lisa Gardner

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of Crash & Burn by Lisa Gardner. A Tessa Leoni Mystery.

Review summary: The storyline is an intriguing one, and it's impossible to figure out where it's leading, making for a very good mystery. Despite a fast start, it's a little slow going for a while before picking up speed and then not letting go. Overall, a solid thriller from this author, with plenty of twists and turns to keep readers on edge. (Click here for text of full review.)

Our rating: 4 of 5 stars

A Tessa Leoni Mystery
Dutton (February 2015)

Publisher synopsis: My name is Nicky Frank. Except, most likely, it isn't. I'm looking for a little girl. I have to save her. Except, most likely, she doesn't exist. My husband claims he'll do anything to save me. Except, most likely, he can't. This is my life. Except, most likely, it's not. Now watch me crash and burn.

Nicole Frank shouldn't have been able to survive the car accident, much less crawl up the steep ravine. Not in the dark, not in the rain, not with her injuries. But one thought allows her to defy the odds and flag down help: Vero.

Sergeant Wyatt Foster is frustrated when even the search dogs can't find any trace of the mysterious missing child. Until Nicky's husband, Thomas, arrives with a host of shattering revelations: Nicole Frank suffers from a rare brain injury and the police shouldn't trust anything she says.

Who is Nicky Frank, and what happened the night her car sailed off the road? Was it a random accident or something more sinister given the woman's lack of family and no close friends? The deeper Wyatt digs, the more concerned he becomes. Because it turns out, in the past few months, Nicky has suffered from more than one close accident … In fact, it would appear someone very much wants her dead.

Russia, 1919. The country is convulsed in a terrible civil war as the newly installed Communist government of Nikolai Lenin and his principal henchman, Leon Trotsky, confront the reactionary "White" armies commanded by generals loyal to the now dead Tsar Nicholas II. It is, like most civil wars, a brutal and savage conflict, with atrocities on both sides, with families split by their differing situations and ideals. At least as eager to regain their ancestral lands as to restore the Tsar, Prince Alexei Bolugayevski of Bolugayen, and his son and heir Colin, are fighting for the Whites in the south. While on the side of the Reds is Prince Alexei's ex-wife Sonia — now mistress to Trotsky. Into this maelstrom comes another member of the family, Joseph Cromb, brought up in England, and now seeking some trace of his mother the Countess Patricia, supposedly murdered by the Reds in 1918.

But when he joins Alexei and Colin, he is captured and taken by the Reds and tortured until Sonia begs for his life. Inevitably, he beds the beautiful woman, before returning to the Whites with a promise to keep her son alive. When he returns Alexei instead sends him to Priscilla, putting him in loco parentis of his wife and children and as the White Army are retreating, he is killed. Meanwhile, Duncan Cromb has also died, leaving his daughter and Joseph's sister, Jennie, alone. Joseph returns home, with Priscilla but it is not long before Russia catches up with them when they are visited by Gosykin. He invites them back to Russia, but in support of the Reds …

Jennie is tempted and before long, Gosykin has seduced her and convinced her to join him so he can use her a propaganda symbol. Colin is now living in Paris, with his sister Anna who he is also in love with. He is the only thing in the way of the Red army, and Gosykin's job is to eliminate him. Joseph and Priscilla split: Joseph in search of his sister Jennie and Priscilla to Boston, to protect her son. Sonia and Trotsky are on the run and being hunted by the Reds.

What will happen to Anna, left weeping over Colin's body? And what will happen to young Alexei, now the Prince Bolugayevski? Will Jennie ever be rescued, will Joseph find her before losing his own life?

In 2005, the fourth anniversary of the September 11th attacks on America is met with the news that Jihadists have attacked multiple targets in Saudi Arabia, destroying oil pumping equipment, crippling pipelines, and assassinating most of the royal family. In the U.S. gas prices soar to over $6 a gallon along with hyper-inflation across the world financial markets. "Non-business travel" in the U.S. is limited to no more than 500 miles per week.

The UN Security Council authorizes an international intervention force, and in a closed session of Congress the "Assassination Bill" is introduced. A "Termination or Neutralization Unit" is formed with Gen. Peter Newman as its head. He is given authority for up to 100 specialists, which he recruits and trains.

It is discovered Iranians plan to detonate a nuke in Washington. Newman and a team are dispatched and a chase across Europe and international waters ensues. Newman hunts his illusive nemesis to Mexico and Cuba, but the Iranians have a backup plan in place and ready a plane repainted as a FedEx cargo jet and armed with a nuclear weapon — headed for Washington.
