Review: Martini Regrets by Phyllis Smallman

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of Martini Regrets by Phyllis Smallman. A Sherri Travis Mystery.

Review summary: The author does tension and suspense very well here, and despite the near constant activity of the lead character, the time spent between the thrilling opening and closing scenes feels too long with not much going on. Overall, a solid effort but one that could have used a little more punch midway through. (Click here for text of full review.)

Our rating: 4 of 5 stars

Bonbons, Apricot truffles, Bourbon balls. Helen Taggart's new chocolate shop, Nectar, boasts them all, thanks to her Belgian great-grandfather's secret recipes. To help it flourish, the gourmand has hired Tucker Sinclair and Associates — although Tucker will admit that by "Associates," she means Eugene Barstok, her fragile secretary-cum-Dick Tracy wannabe.

One night, Tucker finds the shop open, truffles strewn across the floor — and the body of cleaning woman Lupe Ortiz lying next to a bloody green feather. Was someone trying to steal the recipes — perhaps a wounded chocoholic dressed like Robin Hood?

Although Tucker's warned him not to, Eugene starts investigating. So when he fails to show up for work, she has to follow the kid's unorthodox train of thought and the trail of clues, including the fabled quetzal bird and a priceless chocolate pot. With a murderer on the loose, Tucker must find Eugene before a killer exacts his sweet revenge.

Brody "Brutus" Jackson isn't your average small-town mechanic. The shop where he spends his days doubles as the headquarters for the mercenary group he works with. They jokingly call themselves the Bang Shift because the government contracts they take are the less savory ones, and they're all just shady enough to do what's necessary to get the jobs done. As far as Brody's concerned, it's the perfect arrangement for a man with no memory of his past, and no hope for the future.

Under FBI protection, Alexandria Collins and her son have been in hiding for ten years. When it's time to move again, her piece of crap car breaks down and the man giving her a tow is the biggest, hottest guy she's ever seen. She is determined to ignore the need her long-neglected body hungers for. After all, the last man she showed interest in put a gun to her head.

Brody thinks the skittish Xan is sexy as hell, but it's not her hot body that has him rocked to his core. He knows her from somewhere, and in his line of work, that's a dangerous thing. Following orders have never been this hard, but when he finds out she's his next assignment, he will protect her at all costs … even if what she needs protection from most is him.
