This title was listed for free as of January 12, 2015 at 7:10 AM ET.

Thea Campbell goes out for revenge when the one person who is simultaneously the most likely and least likely candidate for thief steals her horse. But Olympic hopeful Valerie Parsons is past caring about being arrested. She's dead.

At first Thea's horse is assumed to have killed the woman, but when the coroner determines it was a human hand and not a horse's hoof that ended Valerie's life Thea becomes a person of interest. Now intimidating people with little regard for due process are showing up on her doorstep looking to even the score. Toss in her wrecked love life, a sexy geology professor who stirs up more than dust, and an alleged psychic horse, and it soon becomes apparent that Thea's predictable life is now out of control.

As she takes charge of clearing herself of the murder she discovers the victim had a knack for making enemies — one of whom is Thea's ditsy sister. She pursues her investigation with more at stake than ever, and in a seedy biker bar comes face-to-tattoo with information that will lead the police to the real killer. She dutifully reports to the detective in charge.

But Thea is wrong. As close to dead wrong as she ever wishes to get.

Though the fourth in the series, it is the first to be published in the US.

On a rainy November day police detectives Pia Kirchhoff and Oliver von Bodenstein are summoned to a mysterious traffic accident: A woman has fallen from a pedestrian bridge onto a car driving underneath. According to a witness, the woman may have been pushed. The investigation leads Pia and Oliver to a small village, and the home of the victim, Rita Cramer.

On a September evening eleven years earlier, two seventeen-year-old girls vanished from the village without a trace. In a trial based only on circumstantial evidence, twenty-year-old Tobias Sartorius, Rita Cramer's son, was sentenced to ten years in prison. Bodenstein and Kirchhoff discover that Tobias, after serving his sentence, has now returned to his home town. Did the attack on his mother have something to do with his return?

In the village, Pia and Oliver encounter a wall of silence. When another young girl disappears, the events of the past seem to be repeating themselves in a disastrous manner. The investigation turns into a race against time, because for the villagers it is soon clear who the perpetrator is — and this time they are determined to take matters into their own hands.

Review: Swann's Lake of Despair by Charles Salzberg

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of Swann's Lake of Despair by Charles Salzberg. A Henry Swann Mystery.

Review summary: It's a little slow going at first, as each of three subplots requires its own setup and there is nothing to connect them. But it's quite intriguing as an end game is negotiated for all three. There's a nuanced complexity here that makes this all very appealing in the end. A solid mystery and one that is recommended. (Click here for text of full review.)

Our rating: 4 of 5 stars

A Henry Swann Mystery
Five Star (October 2014)

Publisher synopsis: When rare photos, a scandalous diary, and a beautiful woman all go missing at once, the stage is set for three challenging cases for Henry Swann. It begins with an offer to partner up with his slovenly, unreliable frenemy, Goldblatt. The disbarred lawyer-turned-"facilitator" would provide the leads and muscle, while Swann would do all the fancy footwork. A lost diary by a free-loving Jazz Age flapper is worth enough to someone that Swann takes a beat down on an abandoned boardwalk. Pilfered photos of Marilyn Monroe propel him deep into the past of an alcoholic shutterbug, his wife; and he's hired to search for a lonely writer's runaway girlfriend. The cases converge and collide in a finale that lifts the curtain on crucial, deadly facts of life for everyone — including Swann himself.

It's 1953 and Sidney Chambers (James Norton) is vicar of Grantchester, a village just outside Cambridge, England. Sidney's is a quiet life. He tends to his flock, keeps up with his jazz collection, and does his best to contain his passion for beautiful heiress Amanda Kendall.

But when one of his parishioners dies in suspicious circumstances, Sidney quickly finds that people confide things in a parish priest that they would never tell police. Pushed into the dangerous world of lies, betrayal, and murder, Sidney joins forces with the overworked and weary Detective Inspector Geordie Keating (Robson Green, Wire in the Blood, Reckless). The cleric and cop bond over their war service, their love of a good pub, and their competitive instincts.

It's the start of a beautiful friendship that will take Sidney and Geordie through a series of challenging cases, revealing the dark side of early 1950s England — jealousy, prejudice, class conflict, and plain old passion.
