After quitting her job, the first thing Zoe Chase has to do is to drive out to the swamp to see her Uncle Saul. He still has the old Airstream trailer he once used for his own restaurant many years before, and Zoe is sure she can convince him to let her make a food truck out of it.

After making the perilous journey from Mobile, Alabama into the backcountry, Zoe finds her uncle embroiled in a cook-off with his neighbor — with the life of Saul's albino alligator, Alabaster, in the balance. Once again, the gator has eaten chickens that didn't belong to her. So Saul and his neighbor will each prepare a meal for a church social, and if Saul wins, the gator lives.

Now it's up to Zoe to prove herself in the kitchen and come up with something no one has seen before — the biscuit bowl!

Down on his luck, a writer takes a ghostwriting job for a troubled comedian …

Stewart Hoag's first novel made him the toast of New York. Everyone in Manhattan wanted to be his friend, and he traveled the cocktail circuit supported by Merilee, his wife, and Lulu, his basset hound. But when writer's block sunk his second novel, his friends, money, and wife all disappeared. Only Lulu stuck by him.

The only opportunity left is ghostwriting — an undignified profession that still beats dental school. His first client is Sonny Day, an aging comic who was the king of slapstick three decades ago. Since he and his partner had a falling out in the late 1950s, Day has grown embittered and poor, until the only thing left for him to do is write a memoir. Hoagy and Lulu fly to Hollywood expecting a few months of sunshine and easy living. Instead they find Day's corpse, and a murder rap with Hoagy's name on it.

A Conversation with Mystery Author Tracy Weber

Omnimystery News: Author Interview with Tracy Weber
with Tracy Weber

We are delighted to welcome author Tracy Weber to Omnimystery News today.

Tracy's second mystery in her downward dog series featuring yoga instructor Kate Davidson is A Killer Retreat (Midnight Ink; January 2015 trade paperback and ebook formats) and we recently had a chance to catch up with her to talk a little more about her books.

— ♦ —

Omnimystery News: Introduce us to Kate Davidson and her "downward dog" companion.

Tracy Weber
Photo provided courtesy of
Tracy Weber

Tracy Weber: Kate Davidson, the yoga teacher/sleuth in my series, has a giving heart, an imperfect body, and a temperament more like a fighting rooster than the Dalai Lama. She's not a stereotypical yoga teacher, but then again, neither are any of the real-life yoga teachers I know, including me. People who teach yoga struggle with the same issues and personal demons as the rest of humanity.

Kate's struggle — that of a good-hearted person who wants to live by her values but often fails — appeals to me. She is flawed in many ways, but she's also very real.

Bella, Kate's German shepherd sidekick, is equally flawed, and in many ways exactly like Kate. Bella is likely to lash out in fear or anger, particularly when she's protecting someone she loves. She gets Kate into trouble, but she would give her life for Kate. The unwavering loyalty they have for each other is rare in this life.

OMN: Into which mystery genre would you place this series? And do you think there is any advantage to categorizing them as such?

TW: Thus far, my books can best be categorized as cozy mysteries, meaning that my grandmother could read them and still think I'm a nice girl. Swearing is at a minimum; blood and gore are off-screen; sex is behind closed doors. That said, my books do gray the cozy line a little. I'm not above throwing out a mild swear word when the occasion calls for it; Kate has "relations" with a new boyfriend on the first date; I tackle tough social issues that aren't usually part of the cozy genre.

I love cozies, so I think it's awesome that my work fits within that genre. Readers know what they're getting when they invest their time and energy into reading my work. On the flip side, belonging to a club isn't always easy, and I'm not a rule follower. Some readers see that as a plus, others as a minus.

Still, I think the advantages overall prevail, as long as readers are willing to give me a little leeway.

OMN: We know both you and your character have a common interest in yoga. Have you included any of your other personal or professional experiences in the books?

TW: I definitely draw from the experiences of my life when I write. The protagonist in my book (Kate Davidson) is a yoga teacher who lives in Seattle and has a crazy German shepherd much like my German shepherd, Tasha. People often say that they see me in Kate and hear my voice in her narration. In fact, when my mother read my first book, Murder Strikes a Pose, she called to tell me she had just read the part where I found the body. I had to remind her that the book was fiction and that I hadn't stumbled across any dead bodies recently.

However, I try not to pick on people I know in my books, meaning that I consciously don't write about my friends, family, or yoga students. It seems mean to write about people I know, because I'd eventually kill them off or make them a murder suspect. My dog can't read and no one cares if I make fun of myself, so I do write about Tasha's and my sillier exploits from time to time.

OMN: Complete this sentence for us: "I am a mystery author and thus I am also …".

TW: I am a mystery author, and thus I am also a serial killer. I am under contract to murder at least one person per year. Fortunately, most of them deserve it.

OMN: When you are selecting a book to read for pleasure, what do you look for?

TW: I'm a cozy girl through and through. Cozies, more so than other mysteries, give a glimpse into the lives and inner workings of their recurring characters. Readers see their favorite sleuths develop throughout the series, and they are treated to an inside glimpse of their quirks, passions, faults and neuroses. Even better, readers know that in the end, justice usually prevails. Cozies tend to have less on-page violence, which is also a bonus for me. Real-life gore is hard enough to deal with it. Why would I want to immerse myself in it when I'm reading for pleasure?

I definitely have favorite authors, if not specific favorite characters. Susan Conant, Laurien Berenson, Linda O. Johnston, and Sheila Boneham write four of my favorite animal-related cozy series.

Tracy Weber and her husband Marc live in Seattle with their challenging yet amazing German shepherd Tasha. When she's not writing, Tracy spends her time teaching yoga, walking Tasha, and sipping Blackthorn cider at her favorite ale house.

A Killer Retreat by Tracy Weber

A Killer Retreat
Tracy Weber
A Downward Dog Mystery

When Kate Davidson gets an offer to teach yoga classes at the Elysian Springs resort, she jumps at the opportunity — even if it means enduring the wedding ceremony of the center's two caretakers. But avoiding the M-word turns out to be the least of Kate's problems when a wedding guest is found floating face-down in the resort's hot tub, shortly after a loud, public fight with Kate.

The police pick Kate as their number-one suspect, so she teams up with her boyfriend Michael, best friend Rene, and German shepherd sidekick Bella to find the real killer. They must solve the crime before the police arrest Kate, or her next gig may last a lifetime — behind bars.

London, 1905. After the death of his second wife, and with patient numbers falling, Doctor Watson is considering retirement. That is, until he gets an urgent telegram from Martha, the housekeeper of an old friend. Sherlock Holmes is ill. Watson must make his way to his cottage in the village of Fullworth as soon as possible. But he arrives to find Holmes alive and well, if a little melancholy. The telegram was a clever ploy by Martha to return Holmes to his former vigour.

In the village, Arshak Sarkies suggests a holiday for the pair as his guests at the Raffles Hotel in Singapore — it should be just what the doctor ordered. But knowing Holmes, they will only be able to tempt him abroad with the promise of one last case …

When they finally arrive at the hotel, it seems that Watson's scheme has come true after all. The wealthy wife of a hotel resident, Mr Derek Masterton, has been found dead in her apartment, her "Singapore Sugarplum" sweets laced with arsenic. With her money protected by a will, who would have the motive to kill Mrs Masterton? How could they have gotten so close, and have predicted her every move? And what of the strange goings-on reported by the butler?

Thrown back into the investigating game, Holmes and Watson must use all their deductive powers to solve the case of the poisoned sugarplums.

The batty old biddies are at it again …

Lady Amanda Golightly receives an invitation to spend Burns' Night in Castle Rumdrummond in Scotland. Although she is dismissive of the idea, her old chum Hugo is thrilled at the thought and, beguiled by the idea of wearing tartan, he uses his own brand of childish pleading to win her agreement to the trip.

Along with Beauchamp, her long-suffering manservant, and her friend, Enid Tweedie, acting as personal servants, the four head north of the border for a "wee break".

It is not too long, however, before murder enters their lives once more, and they begin to suspect some very dirty dealing under the social veneer of castle life.

Bagpipes, haggis, tartan and kilts all make their appearance, as dastardly deeds continue through the snowy landscape. But Death has not yet finished with the houseparty.

It does not take him long to find out. On his first night, he is forced to fend off two desperate, black-clad men who have invaded his Heidelberg hotel room with intent to kill. And then there are a few trivial details that the recruiting agency forgot to mention — such as the fact that the two previous holders of the fellowship both met with mysterious ends.

From there, it is all downhill. Gideon finds himself the target in an unfamiliar game for which no one has bothered to give him the rules. What he does have is his own considerable intellect and his remarkable forensic skills. He will need them, for he is playing for some fairly high stakes: the security of Western Europe.

Review: Wait For Signs by Craig Johnson

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of Wait For Signs by Craig Johnson. A Walt Longmire Short Story Collection.

Review summary: Each story in this collection is distinctive, and tells of a journey Longmire makes through Absaroka County and the very interesting characters he meets along the way. Including the author's Hillerman Award-winning story "Old Indian Trick", a very entertaining collection for fans of the series. (Click here for text of full review.)

Our rating: 4 of 5 stars

Wait For Signs Craig Johnson

Wait For Signs
Craig Johnson
A Walt Longmire Short Story Collection
Viking (October 2014)

Publisher synopsis: Ten years ago, Craig Johnson wrote his first short story, the Hillerman Award — winning "Old Indian Trick." This was one of the earliest appearances of the sheriff who would go on to star in Johnson's novels and the A&E series Longmire. Each Christmas Eve thereafter, fans rejoiced when Johnson sent out a new short story featuring an episode in Walt's life that doesn't appear in the novels; over the years, many have asked why they can't buy the stories in book form.

Wait for Signs collects those beloved stories — and one entirely new story, "Petunia, Bandit Queen of the Bighorns" — for the very first time in a single volume, regular trade hardcover. With glimpses of Walt's past from the incident in "Ministerial Aide," when the sheriff is mistaken for a deity, to the hilarious "Messenger," where the majority of the action takes place in a Port-A-Potty, Wait for Signs is a necessary addition to any Longmire fan's shelf and a wonderful way to introduce new readers to the fictional world of Absaroka County, Wyoming.
