Charles Maxwell has survived thirty-eight years as a crack CIA agent. He's killed before to save himself. Now he faces a killer he can't outwit — cancer. Knowing he has only six months to live, Maxwell finances a "good death" by selling $100,000 worth of second-rate secrets to the Russians. By chance, however, brilliant Soviet dissident Constantin Vronsky is hiding in the chalet next to Maxwell's. The KGB is desperate to prevent his defection. And so is the CIA.

Visiting an art museum displaying a retrospective of acclaimed photographer Kathy Moran's work, aspiring novelist Stacey Kim is stunned by the photo at the center of the show — the famous "Woman with a Gun," which won a Pulitzer Prize and launched the photographer's career. Shot from behind, the enigmatic black-and-white image is a picture of a woman in a wedding dress, standing on the shore at night, facing the sea. Behind her back, she holds a six-shooter.

The image captures Stacey's imagination, raising a host of compelling questions. Has the woman killed her husband on their wedding night? Is she going to commit suicide? Is she waiting for someone she plans to kill? Obsessed with finding answers, Stacey discovers that the woman in the photograph is Megan Cahill, suspected of killing her husband, millionaire Raymond Cahill, with the six-shooter on their wedding night. But the murder was never solved.

Drawn deeper into the case, Stacey finds that everyone involved has a different opinion of Megan's culpability. But the one person who may know the whole story — Kathy Moran — isn't talking. Stacey must find a way to get to the reclusive photographer or the truth may never see the light of day.

There’s a fine line between fact and fiction…

Following the publication of his latest crime novel, Barclay Curle receives a letter from a woman accusing him of writing about the murders she has committed. Is it just the wild ramblings of a crazed fan, or could there really be a violent murderess out there? The discovery of a body killed by the favoured method of Curle's fictional killer seems to suggest there may be some truth to the letter …

But for Detective Inspector Jim Meldrum, Curle seems the obvious suspect. Faced with a second murder and a darkening cloud of suspicion, Curle decides the time has come to take action. After all, he asks himself, who has more experience of solving murder mysteries than a crime novelist?

Please Welcome Back Crime Novelist E.J. Simon

Omnimystery News: Guest Post by E.J. Simon
with E.J. Simon

We are delighted to welcome back author E.J. Simon to Omnimystery News, courtesy of iRead Book Tours, which is coordinating his current book tour. We encourage you to visit all of the participating host sites; you can find his schedule here.

E.J. visited with us last week, when we discussed his new thriller Death Logs In (Simon/Zef Publishing; October 2014 hardcover, trade paperback and ebook formats) and we asked him to tell us more about the places the characters in his stories visit. He titles his guest post for us today, "Characters That Dine in Real Restaurants".

E.J. Simon

My novels move around the world: New York City, Beverly Hills, Florence, Rome, Saint Tropez, Chicago, … and in each of these places the characters dine in real restaurants, eating the actual meals served in those restaurants. Veal Parmigan at Mario's in Westport, Connecticut, Beef Bourguignon at Chez Dumonet in Paris, Florentine steak at Trattoria Omero in Florence, coffee-crusted duck at Bouchard in Newport.

I make the places and the meals a central part of my stories for several reasons. First, being a second-generation Greek, food has always been important in our daily lives. The dinner table was where the family came together each night — and often where the most significant events in our lives unfolded. This was also a way of ensuring that my stories stayed relatively light — an easy read. Although some of the topics are quite serious — life, death, infidelity, religion, corruption — just as in our own lives, we still have to carry on each day. We still have to eat. Our dinners should be the place where we can relax.

I believe the frequent travel and dining in both my books helps keep them light and easy, the way we perhaps wish our lives could be — but often are not.

I don't try and write serious literature. I'm not trying to be Tolstoy — I can't even stand to read Tolstoy. I've set out to simply write great commercial fiction that's a quick read and that allows readers to escape, while still touching on the topics we try to escape from — but never really can.

Before his death, Alex invested heavily in breakthrough artificial intelligence software so that he could live forever. It worked. In his virtual form, Alex can communicate with Michael and monitor information — and people — in ways the NSA would envy.

It is Alex who discovers Michael's life is in danger. He detects plots that reach from the darkest corners of Queens, to the highest officials in the Vatican — and they all want Michael dead.

Michael is now in a race to save his life, but he is never alone — Alex is there to help him navigate through this maze of life and death. Also protecting Michael from the forces closing in around him is Sindy Steele, a beautiful — and lethal bodyguard.

This time they get in the middle of a case involving a beautiful eighty-foot blue spruce that has been chosen to spend the holidays as Rockefeller Center's famous Christmas tree. A prosecutor of violent criminals. A detective on a dangerous beat. When these two pros take on an off-the-books case, the line between professional and personal becomes perilously blurred.

When a twenty-two-year-old convict walks into the courtroom, his eyes confirm what Mia Quinn already guesses: he blames her for his conviction. In seconds, he knocks her to the ground and holds a razor blade to her throat. While she manages to escape without injury, it's just one more reminder that Mia's job prosecuting Seattle's s most dangerous criminals is far from low risk.

As a single mom, the last thing Mia wants is for her work to follow her home or discover that it already has.

Now Detective Charlie Carlson is suggesting the very thing Mia doesn't want to believe — that her accountant husband's deadly car accident was no accident at all. When Mia and Charlie encounter resistance to reopening the case, they take the investigation into their own hands. And they find much more than they bargained for.

Was Mia's husband more than an accountant … and less than an honest man? As the truth becomes more shocking and the case grows more complex, her husband's killers take note of Mia … and her children. How far will this prosecutor go to learn the truth about her husband — and how far will she have to go to protect her family?

On the bitterly cold morning of January 6, a frozen body is found in the Lancashire town of Brunton. It seems 19-year-old Hannah Woodgate is the latest victim of the serial killer the media have dubbed the "Lancashire Leopard". Detective Inspector Percy Peach is determined to find the Leopard before he kills again.

But with no motive, no fingerprints and no clues, that is proving to be a very hard task indeed. How does the Leopard choose his victims? And, with a 60-strong task-force going through a painstaking process of eliminating suspects trying to track him down, how is he keeping one step ahead of the police at every turn?

When the next woman's body is found, the police are as baffled as ever. Whom should they suspect? Handsome loner Clyde Northcott, who was found with drugs after a bust-up at a party? Neo-Nazi thug Paul Dutton, who has shown he can certainly be violent? What about Terry Plant, recently released from prison, and on the hunt for his ex-wife? Or Michael Devaney, who certainly has reason to hold a grudge against women?

With no shortage of suspects, or victims, DI Peach faces fatal pressure to find the "Lancashire Leopard" before he makes his next kill.
