Please Welcome Back Crime Novelist E.J. Simon

Omnimystery News: Guest Post by E.J. Simon
with E.J. Simon

We are delighted to welcome back author E.J. Simon to Omnimystery News, courtesy of iRead Book Tours, which is coordinating his current book tour. We encourage you to visit all of the participating host sites; you can find his schedule here.

E.J. visited with us last week, when we discussed his new thriller Death Logs In (Simon/Zef Publishing; October 2014 hardcover, trade paperback and ebook formats) and we asked him to tell us more about the places the characters in his stories visit. He titles his guest post for us today, "Characters That Dine in Real Restaurants".

My novels move around the world: New York City, Beverly Hills, Florence, Rome, Saint Tropez, Chicago, … and in each of these places the characters dine in real restaurants, eating the actual meals served in those restaurants. Veal Parmigan at Mario's in Westport, Connecticut, Beef Bourguignon at Chez Dumonet in Paris, Florentine steak at Trattoria Omero in Florence, coffee-crusted duck at Bouchard in Newport.

I make the places and the meals a central part of my stories for several reasons. First, being a second-generation Greek, food has always been important in our daily lives. The dinner table was where the family came together each night — and often where the most significant events in our lives unfolded. This was also a way of ensuring that my stories stayed relatively light — an easy read. Although some of the topics are quite serious — life, death, infidelity, religion, corruption — just as in our own lives, we still have to carry on each day. We still have to eat. Our dinners should be the place where we can relax.

I believe the frequent travel and dining in both my books helps keep them light and easy, the way we perhaps wish our lives could be — but often are not.

I don't try and write serious literature. I'm not trying to be Tolstoy — I can't even stand to read Tolstoy. I've set out to simply write great commercial fiction that's a quick read and that allows readers to escape, while still touching on the topics we try to escape from — but never really can.

Death Logs In
E.J. Simon
An Alex and Michael Nicholas Mystery

Some of the most powerful people in the world want to kill Michael Nicholas. Only his brother, Alex can save him — the problem is that Alex is dead.

It's been almost a year since Alex Nicholas, a Queens based underworld Boss, was gunned down. After Alex's brutal murder, Michael inherited not only his brother's business — but his enemies. Michael is now a key player in a world he once feared. By day, he is the head of a Fortune 500 company by night, the CEO of Tartarus, one of the worlds largest illegal gambling operations.

Before his death, Alex invested heavily in breakthrough artificial intelligence software so that he could live forever. It worked. In his virtual form, Alex can communicate with Michael and monitor information — and people — in ways the NSA would envy.

It is Alex who discovers Michael's life is in danger. He detects plots that reach from the darkest corners of Queens, to the highest officials in the Vatican — and they all want Michael dead.

Michael is now in a race to save his life, but he is never alone — Alex is there to help him navigate through this maze of life and death. Also protecting Michael from the forces closing in around him is Sindy Steele, a beautiful — and lethal bodyguard.

How far is Michael willing to go to save his own life — and that of his family? Guided only by a familiar face on a computer screen, will the information Alex discovers allow Michael to go from being the hunted to the hunter?

Alvirah Meehan, the lottery winner turned amateur sleuth, teams up with private investigator Regan Reilly to solve another Christmas mystery. This time they get in the middle of a case involving a beautiful eighty-foot blue spruce that has been chosen to spend the holidays as Rockefeller Center's famous Christmas tree. The folks who picked the tree don't have a clue that attached to one of its branches is a flask chock-full of priceless diamonds that Packy Noonan, a scam artist just released from prison, had hidden there over twelve years ago.

An excited Packy breaks his parole and heads to Stowe, Vermont, to reclaim his loot. Once there, he is horrified to discover that his special tree will be heading to New York City the next morning. With a bumbling crew consisting of Jo-Jo, Benny, and an unsuccessful poet, Milo, he knows he has to act fast.

What Packy does not know is that Alvirah and Regan are on a weekend trip to Stowe with Alvirah's husband, Willy; Regan's fiancé, Jack; Regan's parents, Luke and Nora; and Alvirah's friend Opal, a lottery winner who lost all her winnings in Packy's scam. On Monday morning when they're supposed to head home, they learn that the tree is missing, Packy Noonan may be in the vicinity, and Opal has disappeared.

A prosecutor of violent criminals. A detective on a dangerous beat. When these two pros take on an off-the-books case, the line between professional and personal becomes perilously blurred.

When a twenty-two-year-old convict walks into the courtroom, his eyes confirm what Mia Quinn already guesses: he blames her for his conviction. In seconds, he knocks her to the ground and holds a razor blade to her throat. While she manages to escape without injury, it's just one more reminder that Mia's job prosecuting Seattle's s most dangerous criminals is far from low risk.

As a single mom, the last thing Mia wants is for her work to follow her home or discover that it already has.

Now Detective Charlie Carlson is suggesting the very thing Mia doesn't want to believe — that her accountant husband's deadly car accident was no accident at all. When Mia and Charlie encounter resistance to reopening the case, they take the investigation into their own hands. And they find much more than they bargained for.

Was Mia's husband more than an accountant … and less than an honest man? As the truth becomes more shocking and the case grows more complex, her husband's killers take note of Mia … and her children. How far will this prosecutor go to learn the truth about her husband — and how far will she have to go to protect her family?

On the bitterly cold morning of January 6, a frozen body is found in the Lancashire town of Brunton. It seems 19-year-old Hannah Woodgate is the latest victim of the serial killer the media have dubbed the "Lancashire Leopard". Detective Inspector Percy Peach is determined to find the Leopard before he kills again.

But with no motive, no fingerprints and no clues, that is proving to be a very hard task indeed. How does the Leopard choose his victims? And, with a 60-strong task-force going through a painstaking process of eliminating suspects trying to track him down, how is he keeping one step ahead of the police at every turn?

When the next woman's body is found, the police are as baffled as ever. Whom should they suspect? Handsome loner Clyde Northcott, who was found with drugs after a bust-up at a party? Neo-Nazi thug Paul Dutton, who has shown he can certainly be violent? What about Terry Plant, recently released from prison, and on the hunt for his ex-wife? Or Michael Devaney, who certainly has reason to hold a grudge against women?

With no shortage of suspects, or victims, DI Peach faces fatal pressure to find the "Lancashire Leopard" before he makes his next kill.

Samuel Madison always wondered what Sandrine saw in him. He was a meek, stuffy doctorate student, and she a brilliant, beautiful, bohemian with limitless talents and imagination. On the surface their relationship and marriage semed perfectly tranquil: jobs at the same small, liberal arts college, a precocious young daughter, a home filled with art and literature, and trips to some of the world's most beautiful cities and towns. And then one night Sandrine is found dead in their bed and Samuel is accused of her murder.

As the truth about their often tumultuous relationship comes to light, Samuel must face a town and media convinced of his guilt, a daughter whose faith in her father has been shaken to its core, and astonishing revelations about his wife that make him fall in love with her for a second time. A searing novel about love lost and rediscovered, from one of our greatest chroniclers of the human heart.

Welcome to Pistol Rock, Texas where everyone knows secrets last about as long as the sporadic west Texas rain showers …

Laney Briggs has long been considered reckless by the denizens of her hometown, but she's finally turned it all around — she's happily engaged to the local veterinarian and she's become a Pistol Rock deputy sheriff. Everything's fine and dandy — until a dead body turns up and her ex, Texas Ranger Gunner Wilson, decides to stick his boots into the town's first murder case.

Of course, the troublesome cowboy's rugged good looks and T-shirt-straining muscles are already leaving Laney knee-deep in hot water, but she'll be damned if she lets Gunner trample all over her turf. She's decided that, instead of conflict, she wants a contented, steady life with her vet — a life in which Gunner Wilson and his seemingly endless ability to undermine her resolve and her libido plays no part.

Still, it's hard to keep her head as forbidden sparks ignite and suspicions arise between old rivals and old flames. And when the bodies start to pile up, Laney has to ask the lethal bad boy for a hand- and a truce in exchange for his help. But after uncovering the pack of lies surrounding not only her job but her heart …

Having an ex-boyfriend as an ally might not be the best idea, but it's certainly the most reckless, and Laney has always been pretty reckless …

Detective Fiona Fitzgerald is an unlikely force for justice in Washington D.C.'s predominantly male police force. As a Senator's daughter and top investigator in the homicide division of the Metropolitan Police Department, Fiona maneuvers between two vastly different worlds, moving quickly from opulent State galas to gritty crime scenes. Born into the elite social circles of the nation's capital, and armed with intimate knowledge of the true face of the political establishment, Fiona is determined to expose the chicanery concealed within the highest echelons of the American political aristocracy.

When a string of inexplicable murders rocks the hallowed streets of central D.C., Fiona finds herself charging through shadows of a mysterious conspiracy. Faced with an investigation with no leads and a rising body count, Fiona's reputation as top investigator of the Miami Division is called into question.

At the brink of professional ruin, an encounter with the eccentric yet charismatic Thaddeus Remington III at his museum-like mansion sends Fiona hurtling headlong through a whirlwind of clues. Where once the desperate detective blundered through traceless footsteps of a triple murderer, the answers to her case now seem to be whispered from bloodstained graves of fallen Presidents. Fiona stands ready, her finger on the trigger, as an assassination plot decades in the making is about to change history forever.
