Review: A Distance To Death by Holly Menino

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of A Distance To Death by Holly Menino. A Tink Elledge Mystery.

Review summary: The murder mystery here is a little thin, though the characters are generally interesting and the mountain setting nearly ideal. However, without a compelling crime plot to draw readers in and keep them engaged, this is an easy book to put down and possibly forget to pick back up again. (Click here for text of full review.)

Our rating: 3 of 5 stars

A Tink Elledge Mystery
Minotaur Books (August 2014)

Publisher synopsis: Tink Elledge is a woman who doesn't take well to sitting still — not when it comes to husbands, not when it comes to looking after her stepson Stephen, and certainly not when it comes to horses. So when she gets the chance to ride in a competition again — even on a trail as grueling as the steep twists and turns of the legendary Tevis endurance trail ride — she jumps at it. In the Sierra mountain wilderness, she and her friend Isabel — an avid horsewoman and Darwin devotee — will race across one hundred miles of spectacular gorges and cross heart-stopping fords.

Meanwhile, Stephen and Tink's husband, Charlie, are nearby working on a new partnership with the brilliant but secretive scientist James Grant-Worthington. When Grant-Worthington suddenly dies of not-so-natural causes, the entire deal is thrown into question. Eager to help, Tink begins searching for clues, starting with Josh Untemeyer, the PR manager for the institute Grant-Worthington founded to promote the theory of intelligent design, who has also been pursuing Isabel. As Tink and Isabel join the pack of elite riders and their horses scramble up the vertiginous, narrow trail, Josh goes missing. Tink must sort through the secrets and lies in a race against time to cross the finish line and save the two people she cares for.

A sizzling Latina singer spells murder for Detroit's best P.I.

Who is Gilia Cristobal?

She's simply one of the hottest of hot Latina singers. Nothing in her life, however, is simple. In her native land she was involved with people the government didn't like, and she barely escaped with her life to start fresh in the United States. In her wake she left behind accusations about a former lover, about violence, and about blackmail. Now she's in Detroit to make music and wants Amos Walker to protect her from those who have threatened her life. She also wants him to investigate someone from the darkest chapter of her former life. When Walker realizes that Gilia's main man, recently out of prison, doesn't regret the time he nearly killed Walker, what first seemed like an easy payday starts looking more and more like a losing proposition. Latin heat, indeed.

Blood, frogs and a deadly threat to the firstborn …

Luke Ballard, Dominus Elemancer and Privy Inquirer into Divers Mischiefs and Grievances, has grown his magical powers since his last encounter with the Sunderers, dark sorcerers who will stop at nothing — including partnering with England's mortal enemies — to destroy the throne. But is he skilled enough to protect his own and prevent tragedy from reaching the royal family?

The continuation of Tudor rule and the future of England's true religion rest with King Henry IX's new bride, Queen Madeline of Scotland. Pregnant with a possible heir, she's nearly killed — twice — in incidents that bizarrely mimic the Plagues of Egypt. And she is not alone. All of Hampton Court, it seems, has been surrounded by a dark cloud of otherworldly danger.

Fearful for his wife and unborn child, King Henry can only turn to one man.

Back at Oxford for her reunion, Harriet Vane, Lord Peter's beloved, finds herself in mortal danger …

Since she graduated from Oxford's Shrewsbury College, Harriet Vane has found fame by writing novels about ingenious murders. She also won infamy when she was accused of committing a murder herself. It took a timely intervention from the debonair Lord Peter Wimsey to save her from the gallows, and since then she has devoted her spare time to resisting his attempts to marry her. Putting aside her lingering shame from the trial, Harriet returns to Oxford for her college reunion with her head held high — only to find that her life is in danger once again.

The first poison-pen letter calls her a "dirty murderess," and the ones that follow are no kinder. As the threats become more frightening, she calls on Lord Peter for help. Among the dons of Oxford lurks a killer, but it will take more than a superior education to match Lord Peter and the daring Harriet.

Being police chief in tiny Prosperity, North Carolina, typically meant that Judd Wheeler mostly handed out traffic tickets and quelled the occasional domestic dispute. Being shot during a routine investigation changed all that.

Within weeks of Wheeler's return to the job, a banker and his wife disappear, and the most hated man in town is brutally murdered. Compounding his troubles is the return of Wheeler's best childhood friend Sean "Shug" Burch, an ex-convict turned celebrity country-blues singer whom Wheeler helped put in prison for rape almost thirty years earlier, and who may be seeking revenge.

Formerly a bucolic country paradise, Prosperity has become a hotbed of crime, and only Chief Judd Wheeler — with the assistance of an unexpected ally — can bring it back to order.

At a posh South American resort tucked into the lush jungles of the Andes, an American journalist has gone missing, leaving the hotel's PR agent, Pilar Rojas, with an international incident on her hands. Which is why she offers her ex-lover, travel writer Jacob Smalls, an all-expenses-paid trip to the resort in exchange for a puff piece extolling its virtues — and some behind-the-scenes digging into the disappearance. Intrigued by the prospect of winning Pilar back — and eager, as always, for freebies — Jacob hops the first flight to La Paz, Bolivia.

Although he hasn't seen Pilar in years, Jacob finds her just as intoxicating as he did when they were together. But from the moment he hits the city's cobbled streets, Jacob attracts all the wrong kinds of attention. Political flunkies and goons of all stripes try to scare him off the trail, while the missing woman's not-quite boyfriend insists on shadowing Jacob's every move. And amid ancient Incan hillside terraces, a world-class hotel conceals a secret that may kill.

Christmas Eve, 1814: Jane Austen has been invited to spend the holiday with family and friends at The Vyne, the gorgeous ancestral home of the wealthy and politically prominent Chute family. As the year fades and friends begin to gather beneath the mistletoe for the twelve days of Christmas festivities, Jane and her circle are in a celebratory mood: Mansfield Park is selling nicely; Napoleon has been banished to Elba; British forces have seized Washington, DC; and on Christmas Eve, John Quincy Adams signs the Treaty of Ghent, which will end a war nobody in England really wanted.

Jane, however, discovers holiday cheer is fleeting. One of the Yuletide revelers dies in a tragic accident, which Jane immediately views with suspicion. If the accident was in fact murder, the killer is one of Jane's fellow snow-bound guests. With clues scattered amidst cleverly crafted charades, dark secrets coming to light during parlor games, and old friendships returning to haunt the Christmas parties, whom can Jane trust to help her discover the truth and stop the killer from striking again?

Vera: Set Four

Vera
Set Four

Brenda Blethyn returns as Detective Chief Inspector Vera Stanhope, whose offbeat manner and frumpy appearance belie a knack for catching killers. Stanhope is ably assisted by Detective Sergeant Joe Ashworth (David Leon), her colleague, confidante, and surrogate son. Ashworth tries to balance his family responsibilities with the demands of working for a boss who seems to have little else in her life but the job.

In this season, Stanhope and Ashworth take on four new cases on their Northumberland beat — the stabbing of a senior citizen aboard a rush-hour train, the brutal murder of a young professional at a beach resort, the shooting of a loner out on the moors, and the drowning of a respected businessman.

Based in part on books by crime novelist Ann Cleeves, this atmospheric drama delivers compelling characters, superb performances, and suspenseful mysteries.
