More about our featured title, below …

The bodies of three people are found at an exclusive guest house in the beautiful Franschhoek wine valley. Two of them were professional bodyguards, but the British citizen they were meant to be protecting is nowhere to be found; left behind are his brand new passport, new suitcase, and new clothes. And the spent shell cases bear a chilling engraving: the flaring head of a spitting cobra.

Meanwhile, in Cape Town, a skilled pickpocket is using his considerable talents to put his younger sister through school. But one day he is caught in the act. Security guards begin to question him, only to be killed with consummate ease by a stranger who leaves behind the distinctive shell cases.

With the help of his colleagues, Detective Benny Griessel rushes to untangle a case that only grows more complex. The British man's passport turns out to be a fake, but the British consulate is decidedly unhelpful. And then the pickpocket's sister is abducted.

From Cape Town's famous waterfront to a deadly showdown on a suburban train, the storyline hurtles towards a shocking finale — and someone may not make it out alive.

Lenny Archer had more than a fair share of tough times and hard knocks, but he had finally decided to stay in the game rather than cash in his chips. Then, two late-night intruders at the Private Investigation office of Archer and Pigeon violently take the choice of life over death out of Lenny's hands.

Jimmy Pigeon is determined to discover who killed his friend and partner. He may have to learn what became of the actor who portrayed Charlie Chan in the thirties, and who assassinated a charismatic mobster in the late-forties, before he can identify Archer's killers.

LAPD Lieutenant Ray Boyle is not anxious to get tied up in the Chinese fire drill that is the Archer murder case, but he is far less inclined to get anywhere near the question of where a former Heisman Trophy winning football player was on an infamous night in June 1994.

Pigeon and Boyle become reluctant allies, sharing little in common besides a mutual hope that Major League Baseball can thwart a players' strike and the bad guys learn crime doesn't pay.

Jesse's second book in his Captain Shelby Trilogy is titled Captain Shelby (Imajin Books; September 2014 trade paperback and ebook formats) and we asked him if we could hear from the the captain himself. He agreed, and Nereus H. Shelby's guest post for us today is titled, "How To Mend a Fishing Net".

Captain Shelby

What are ye at? This here be only me second blog thingie. I hope she sails right good.

'Sposed to be after discussin' how to mend a fishin' net with ye. Truth be told, me net don't be like yers or others. She be older than I feel comfertible sayin'. Sure, I used to mend net when I was yer age, but that be long ago and me don't remember much. But what I be after tellin' ye here be far better than doin' regular mendin'.

If ye want to mend a net the real way, ye have to learn to sit with the sea. Ye can't be in a big hurry like all the rest of them land folk. Here's what ye must do.

Take yer skip a ways out, away from other boats. The sea, she be more shy than ye think; she won't have much to do with ye if there be a lot of noise and land stink nearby. See? 'Tis like me father used to say, "Brawl with a pig and ye take away his stink."

When ye reach a good distance from the land, don't grab yer net, but listen to me. No one be after talkin' to the sea anymore. Be a sad state a things, if ye ask me. This is why the land folk have to mend net the hard way. Just sit there and talk to her. I know, 'tis a bit silly at first, but just try it. What have ye to lose? Truth be told, ye been mendin' yer net over and over again and not makin' much wake, right? Talk to her from yer heart … from yer soul. She don't have to answer back, see? But ye will know if she answers.

When ye feel ye hath bonded with the sea fer a right while, drop yer net in the sea and let her sit fer a spell. If yer net ain't mended when ye take her out, there be somethin' wrong with ye … something turned crooked in yer life … and you'll have to be after settin' that thing straight first. Then ye can try again.

Hope this blog thingie helps ye. If not, don't blame me; I don't know everythin'. Besides, ye can always return to yer land nonsense. Perhaps that be all ye were after to start with.

May the sea be with ye,

Captin Shelbee.

A Mysterious Review of Played To Death by BV Lawson. A Scott Drayco Mystery.

Review summary: The storyline here is nicely structured, and creatively ties together two murder mysteries, which occurred decades apart. The small town setting is ideal, the lead character engaging, and the supporting cast interesting and diverse. Overall, a solid start to this series. (Click here for text of full review.)

A Scott Drayco Mystery
Crimetime Press (July 2014)

Publisher synopsis: Still suffering nightmares from a case that ended tragically, brilliant freelance crime consultant Scott Drayco considers retiring from crime solving altogether. When a former client bequeaths Drayco a rundown Opera House in a Virginia seaside town, he figures he'll arrange for a quick sale of the place, while nursing his battered soul in a peaceful setting near the shore. What he doesn't count on is finding a dead body on the Opera House stage, a mysterious "G" carved into the man's chest.

With hopes for a quick sale dashed and himself a suspect in the murder, Drayco digs into old secrets buried like shells beneath the sand in order to solve the crime and clear his name. Along the way, Drayco must dodge a wary Sheriff, hostility over coastal development, and the seductive wife of a town councilman — before the tensions explode into more violence and he becomes the next victim.

When CIA agent Merry Wrath is "accidently" outted, she's forced her into early retirement, changes her appearance, and moves where no one will ever find her — Iowa. Instead of black bag drops in Bangkok, she now spends her time leading a young Girl Scout troop. But Merry's new simple life turns not-so-simple when an enemy agent shows up dead at scout camp. Suddenly Merry is forced to deal with her former life in order to preserve her future one.

It doesn't help matters that the CIA sends in her former, sexy handler to investigate … or that the hot new neighbor across the street turns out to be the local detective in charge of her case. And when Merry is forced to take on a roommate in the voluptuous form of a turned KGB agent/bimbo, things become trickier than wet work in Waukegan or cookie sales in the spring. Nothing in the CIA or Girl Scouts' training manuals has prepared her for what comes next …

Luke Bowers is in the good and evil business …

On a cold, late-winter morning in the Chesapeake Bay community of Tidewater County, Bowers discovers a dead woman seated in a pew at the church where he is pastor — her eyes open, her hands clasped as if in prayer.

Nothing at the scene identifies the woman or explains why she was at the church. And when state police homicide investigator Amy Hunter comes to town to head up the case, not everyone is pleased that a young, female outsider has the job. The only lead in solving the crime is a sequence of numbers that has been carved into the victim's right hand, which Bowers suspects may be a reference to the Book of Psalms.

With Bowers's help, Hunter follows a chain of seemingly innocuous clues to track down a deranged serial killer and unravel an elusive criminal enterprise that is more powerful than they ever could have imagined.

Money from a recent fundraiser has ended up in the account of Webster Barrons, and the family is hoping Jennie can clear their son's name. Instead of answers, Jennie finds the body of Preston's right hand man. She goes looking for the security guard, but he finds her first and assumes she's trying to sneak out. It seems the only way to extricate herself from bank politics is to find the killer.
