But after some strange noises draw her into Oddities, the neighboring antiques shop, Carmela's night is abruptly put on hold when a bloody body falls out of a curio cabinet — and into her arms.

While shop owner Marcus Joubert was known for being an eccentric with a penchant for eclectic merchandise, Carmela never thought he was the kind of man who could inspire the passion required to kill. But when Marcus's assistant — and fiancée — Mavis reveals that a priceless death mask was also stolen, it becomes clear that murder wasn't the culprit's sole intention.

Carmela can't resist the urge to investigate the growing mystery, but as the list of suspects increases, she realizes it'll take every trick in the book to unmask the killer thief before there's another night of murderous mischief …

Lights Out by Melissa Groeling

HE DARTED OUTSIDE, UNSCATHED.
The air was freezing, pulling the air from his lungs with greedy, icy fingers. It was almost enough to make him turn right around and dive back into the house.
  Almost.
He smelled snow, but he couldn't see anything. It was darker than hell outside. He groped in front of him and made for what he hoped were the steps. His feet slid and Ethan's arms tightened around his neck. He bit back a surprised "whoa" as he skittered down a small flight of steps and ended up thigh-deep in snow.
  "Shit!" he bellowed.
He heard feet on the steps behind him.
"They're coming!" Ethan chattered out, his little body trembling against his back.
Without looking back, Paul took two and a half wobbly lunges when a force barreled into him, sending him face-first into the snow. Sputtering curses and chips of snow and ice, he rolled onto his side, half-aware of Ethan coughing and fighting to hold onto him. Paul struggled to his knees. He thought he could make out Jakob's face in the near-darkness and he punched him in the mouth, sending him flying backward. Paul scrambled to his feet or tried to but the snow was too deep and he was sinking ass-first, in very close danger of being stuck. He struggled to free himself, to at least get his feet under him. He heard wheezing, desperate noises coming from somewhere behind him.
Oh Christ, Ethan, hang in there, man.
His lungs were freezing and burning at the same time, his body beginning to shut down against the cold. His eyes watered, blinding him further.
Come on! Get the hell out of here! Move your ass!
But he could barely stand. He was digging himself a hole the more he tried to move. Snow leaked into his pants and down his shirt and into his boots, the feel of it nearly paralyzing him. It seemed to rise around him like the walls of an icy prism. He felt his hair freeze against his head and his nose ran to an icy stop on his upper lip. His breath puffed out in jagged, little clouds.
Come on, come on, COME ON!
The weight on his back was suddenly gone. Hands grabbed him under the arms and pulled him back. He howled in frustration and fought to free himself. He tried to shout but his words were lost in a teeth-chattering whimper.
He found himself looking up at Irene and he had a split second to think here we go again before she slammed the butt of the shotgun in his face …

Meet twenty-two-year-old Cherry Pye (née Cheryl Bunterman), a pop star since she was fourteen — and about to attempt a comeback from her latest drug-and-alcohol disaster.

Now meet Cherry again: in the person of her "undercover stunt double," Ann DeLusia. Ann portrays Cherry whenever the singer is too "indisposed" — meaning wasted — to go out in public. And it is Ann-mistaken-for-Cherry who is kidnapped from a South Beach hotel by obsessed paparazzo Bang Abbott.

Now the challenge for Cherry's handlers (über — stage mother; horndog record producer; nipped, tucked, and Botoxed twin publicists; weed whacker — wielding bodyguard) is to rescue Ann while keeping her existence a secret from Cherry's public — and from Cherry herself.

The situation is more complicated than they know. Ann has had a bewitching encounter with Skink — the unhinged former governor of Florida living wild in a mangrove swamp — and now he's heading for Miami to find her …

Will Bang Abbott achieve his fantasy of a lucrative private photo session with Cherry Pye? Will Cherry sober up in time to lip-synch her way through her concert tour? Will Skink track down Ann DeLusia before Cherry's motley posse does?

Telemystery News: NBC Developing Tim Hallinan's Junior Bender Mysteries for Television

Telemystery: Mystery and Suspense on Television

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that NBC has given a script commitment to develop the Junior Bender series of comedic crime novels by Timothy Hallinan for television.

Introduced in the 2010, Junior Bender is a high-end thief. He's also the go-to guy in Los Angeles when criminals who can't — or won't — go to the police and need something investigated. Read more about the first book in the series, Crashed, below.

Crashed by Timothy Hallinan

Junior Bender is a Los Angeles burglar with a magic touch. Since he first started breaking into houses when he was fourteen years old, he's never once been caught. But now, after twenty-two years of an exemplary career, Junior has been blackmailed by Trey Annunziato, one of the most powerful crime bosses in LA, into acting as a private investigator on the set of Trey's porn movie venture, which someone keeps sabotaging. The star Trey has lined up to do all that's unwholesome on camera is Thistle Downing, America's beloved child star, who now lives alone in a drug-induced stupor, destitute and uninsurable. Her starring role will be the scandalous fall-from-grace gossip of rubber-neckers across the country. No wonder Trey needs help keeping the production on track.

Junior knows what that he should do — get Thistle out and find her help — but doing the right thing will land him on the wrong side of LA's scariest mob boss. With the help of his precocious twelve-year-old daughter, Rina, and his criminal sidekick, Louie the Lost (an ex-getaway driver), Junior has to figure out a miracle solution.

When a sailor dies under unusual circumstances, Raiford goes undercover on the high seas …

The Rossi family received only a handful of letters after their son shipped out on the supertanker Aurora Victorious. The first dispatches were from Harold himself, describing the blend of tedium and excitement that defined life onboard the ship. The last communication came from the ship's owners: four brief sentences informing them that their son had died and been buried at sea. Desperate to know more, the Rossis turn to James and Julie Raiford, the father-daughter detective team behind the Touchstone Agency. As the Raifords soon learn, work on the open sea is dangerous — and asking questions can be deadly.

When the shipping company stonewalls the investigation, James joins the Aurora Victorious as an electronics officer, and Julie digs into the proprietors' shadowy background. International oil shipping is a ruthless business, and its secrets run as deep as the ocean itself.
