Blond Cargo by John Lansing

JACK CARRIED A SUBWAY TURKEY sandwich, a tall unsweetened iced coffee, a bottle of water, and a smile as he keyed the security gate that led to the dock in Marina del Rey where his boat was moored. The marina was always quiet during the week. Just the way he liked it.
He stopped to admire his twenty-eight feet of heaven before stepping onto his boat's transom and then …
  "Yo, Mr. B."
Jack never forgot a voice, which explained his reluctance to turn around.
  "Yo, yo, Mr. B."
Miserably persistent, Jack thought. He turned to face Peter Maniacci, who was dressed head-to-toe in black. With his outstretched arms draped over the chain-link fence, Peter looked like an Italian scarecrow. The black circles under his eyes belied his youth. The sharp points of his sideburns, his boots, and the .38 hanging lazily from a shoulder holster added menace to his goofy grin.
So close, Jack thought. His only worry that day had been whether to eat his sandwich dockside or out on the Pacific with a view of the Santa Monica Pier.
  "How you doing, Peter?"
  "How you doin'?"
Jack let out a labored sigh. "We could do this all day. What's up?"
"That's funny, Mr. B. How's the boy? How's his pitching arm?"
Jack's face tightened. He wasn't happy that Peter knew
any of his son's particulars. When he didn't answer, Peter continued.
"Hey, nice boat. I used to fish for fluke off the north shore. Long Island. I think I must be in the wrong business."
"Count on it," Jack said. "What can I do for you?"
"My boss was wondering if you could spare a few minutes of your time."
As if on cue, a black Town Car materialized behind Peter and came to a smooth, silent stop. The car rose visibly when Peter's boss, a thick, broad-shouldered man, stepped out of the rear seat.
Vincent Cardona. Expensive suit, the body of a defensive linebacker — fleshy but muscled. Dark, penetrating eyes. Cardona looked in both directions before leveling his feral gaze on Jack. An attempt at a smile fell short of the mark. A thick manila envelope was tucked under one beefy arm.
Jack had been aware there would be some form of payback due for information Cardona had provided on Arturo Delgado, the man responsible for the attempted murder of his son. He just didn't think it would come due this quickly. He opened the locked gate and let the big man follow him down the dock toward his used Cutwater cabin cruiser.
As Peter stood sentry in front of the Lincoln Town Car, Jack allowed the devil entry to his little piece of paradise.
"How's your boy? How's the pitching arm?" Vincent asked bluntly. Just a reminder of why he was there.
"On the mend." Jack gestured to one of two canvas deck chairs in the open cockpit of the boat. Both men sat in silence as Jack waited for Cardona to explain the reason for his visit.
Jack wasn't comfortable with Cardona's talking about Chris, but the big man had taken it upon himself to station Peter outside Saint John's Health Center while his son was drifting between life and death. Cardona's enforcer had scared off Delgado, and that might have saved his son's life. The unsolicited good deed was greatly appreciated by Jack. The debt weighed heavily.
"It rips your heart out when your children have problems and you can't do nothing to help," Cardona said with the raspy wheeze of a man who had abused cigars, drugs, booze, and fatty sausage for most of his life.
"What can I do for you?" Jack asked, not wanting to prolong the impromptu meeting.
Cardona, unfazed by Jack's brusqueness, answered by pulling out a picture and handing it to Jack.
"Angelica Marie Cardona. She's my girl. My only. My angel. Her mother died giving birth. I didn't have the heart to re-up. I raised her by myself."
Mobster with a heart of gold. Right, Jack thought. But Cardona's wife must have been a stunner because Angelica, blond, early twenties, with flawless skin and gray-green eyes, didn't get her good looks from her father. Cardona's gift was her self-assured attitude, which all but leaped off the photograph.
  "Beautiful."
Jack Bertolino, master of the understatement, he thought.
"And doesn't she know it. Too much so for her own good. You make mistakes, my line of business. Whatever."
"What can I do for you, Vincent?" Jack said, dialing back the attitude.
Cardona tracked a seagull soaring overhead with his heavy-lidded eyes and rubbed the stubble on his jaw.
Jack would have paid good money to change places with the gull.
"I shoulda never moved out here. L.A. I'm a black-socks- on-the-beach kinda guy. East Coast all the way. Never fit in. But I'm a good earner and the powers that be decided they were happy with the arrangement. Everyone was happy except Angelica and me.
"She turned thirteen, didn't wanna have nothing to do with her old man. Turned iceberg cold. I tried everything — private schools, horses, ballet, therapy, live-in help; nothin' worked. She closed up tighter than a drum. I finally threatened to send her to the nuns."
  "How did that work out?"
"I'm fuckin' sitting here, aren't I? On this fuckin' dinghy … no offense meant," he said, trying to cover, but the flash of anger told the real story. "I hear you're an independent contractor now."
It was Tommy Aronsohn, his old friend and ex — district attorney, who had set him up with his PI's license and first client, Lawrence Weller and NCI Corp. But Jack Bertolino and Associates, Private Investigation, still didn't come trippingly off his tongue.
And thinking of the disaster up north, he said, "We'll see how that goes."
"This is the point. I haven't seen my daughter in close to a month. Haven't heard word one since around the time your son was laid up in Saint John's," he said. Reminder number two. "It's killing me," he continued. "I'm getting a fuckin' ulcer. Then this."
Cardona pulled out the L.A. Times with the front-page spread reporting on the woman who had died when her boat crashed on the rocks at Paradise Cove. As it turned out, a second woman down in Orange County had washed up on the beach a few weeks earlier at the Terranea resort, scaring the joy out of newlyweds taking photos at sunset. Talk about twisted memories, Jack thought. As if marriage wasn't tough enough. He'd already read both articles with his morning coffee and hadn't bought into the pattern the reporter inferred.
  "And the connection?"
"I got a bad feeling is all. She's never disappeared like this before — not for this long anyway," he said, amending his statement. "And then …" Cardona said, waving the newspaper like it was on fire. "It says here they were both blonds. Both about Angelica's age. They could be fuckin' cousins. Could be nothing."
"Did you file a missing-persons report?"
Cardona gave him a hard side eye. "Jack, don't fuck with me. We take care of our own."
Jack thought before he spoke. "I'm not one of yours."
  "Semantics."
  "What about your crew?"
Cardona flopped open his meaty hands. "I get angina, I don't call my cousin Frankie, who has a certain skill set but stinks when it comes to open-heart surgery. Look, I get it. You were on the other team. But this is straight-up business. One man to another. One father to another. I need you to find my girl. You got my number. Use it, Jack. Money's no object. Find my baby."
  Strike three.
Jack didn't answer. He stared out at the navy-blue water of the marina, past row upon row of beautiful yachts, symbols of dreams fulfilled, and knew they were empty notions compared to family.
Cardona hadn't actually spoken the words you owe me, but they filled the subtext of everything he'd said. He was not subtle. The big man had reached out when Jack was in need, and Jack had accepted the offer. Now Vincent Cardona wanted his pound of flesh.
"This is everything I know. Last address, phone numbers, phone bills, e-mail accounts, bank, credit cards, friends and whatnot. The whole shot," Cardona said, holding the manila envelope out in Jack's direction.
"I have other commitments," Jack stated.
"You look real fuckin' busy, Jack, if you don't mind my sayin'." His eyes crinkled into a sarcastic grin. Vincent Cardona does charm.
Jack accepted the overstuffed envelope with a sigh.
"If she don't want to come back, fine. No funny business, no strong-arm bullshit from my end. You got my word. I just need to know that my blood is alive. I'm fuckin' worried and I don't do worry too good. Sleep on it, Jack. But do the right thing."
Cardona's eyes locked on to Jack's. Jack remained silent. He'd take a look. No promises, not yet.
Vincent's knees cracked and the canvas chair squeaked like it was in pain as he stood up. He covered a belch behind his fist and rubbed his gut as he moved stiffly past Jack. The boat rocked when Cardona stepped off and walked heavily away, his Italian leather shoes echoing on the wooden dock.
The weight of the world. Jack could relate.
Peter Maniacci opened the gate for his boss and then the door to the Lincoln Town Car, which plunged to curb level as the big man slid in. Peter ran around to the other side of the car and tossed Jack a wave like the queen mum. He jumped into the Lincoln, which lurched forward before Peter could slam the door shut.
Jack walked into the boat's deckhouse, grabbed a bottle of water, and downed two more Excedrin. He stretched his back, which was going into a spasm from yesterday's violence, and chased the pills with a Vicodin to stay one step ahead of the pain that he knew was headed his way.
Jack had already decided to take the case.

A Conversation with Mystery Author Dennis Palumbo

Omnimystery News: Author Interview with Dennis Palumbo
with Dennis Palumbo

We are delighted to welcome author Dennis Palumbo to Omnimystery News today.

Dennis is the author of a mystery series featuring psychologist and Pittsburgh Police Department consultant Daniel Rinaldi. The fourth book in this series is Phantom Limb (Poisoned Pen Press; September 2014 hardcover, trade paperback, audiobook and ebook formats) and we recently had the opportunity to talk with him more about it.

Omnimystery News: Introduce us to Daniel Rinaldi.

Dennis Palumbo
Photo provided courtesy of
Dennis Palumbo

Dennis Palumbo: My series character is Dr. Daniel Rinaldi, a psychologist and trauma expert who consults with the Pittsburgh Police. His specialty is treating the victims of violent crime: those who've survived the kidnapping, the rape, or home invasion, but still suffer from the traumatic after-effects. Rinaldi himself suffered such a trauma when his wife was murdered during a mugging. Though he himself was also shot, Rinaldi lived and struggled with survivor guilt. Now his mission is to help others deal with their own trauma symptoms. However, he also manages to get involved in some of the crimes himself, much to the consternation of his police colleagues. There have been four books in the series so far: Mirror Image, Fever Dream, Night Terrors, and the latest, Phantom Limb.

OMN: How has the characters changed over the course of these four books?

DP: I've had my characters age and change, and plan to continue to do so. People get married, fall off the wagon, get romantically involved with other characters in the series, etc. In fact, if the comments I get from readers is any indication, they're very interested in the lives of my supporting characters. Especially that of Noah Frye, a paranoid schizophrenic who also happens to be my lead character's best friend; Sgt. Harry Polk, the detective who bumps heads with Daniel Rinaldi during each case, and Polk's partner, Det. Eleanor Lowrey, with whom Rinaldi has an on-again/off-again romantic relationship.

OMN: Is Daniel Rinaldi based on anyone you know?

DP: Daniel Rinaldi bears a remarkable similarity to his author: both are Italian-American males, born and raised in Pittsburgh, and graduates of the University of Pittsburgh (the first in their respective families to go to college). We also share a beard and glasses, the same point of view about the mental health industry and how to conduct psychotherapy, and a love of jazz and the Steelers. However, Rinaldi is much cooler, braver and more resourceful than his author! He's also a former amateur boxer, another aspect of his character where he and his creator part company.

OMN: Into which genre would you place this series?

DP: I would call them mystery thrillers, or crime thrillers.

OMN: Tell us something about Phantom Limb that isn't mentioned in the publisher's synopsis.

DP: Though the main story concerns a suicidal patient who is kidnapped right outside Rinaldi's office, the subplot of the novel deals with a returned Afghan vet who lost a leg to an IED in combat. The younger brother of Charlene Hines, Noah Frye's girlfriend, the vet suffers from "phantom limb" syndrome, the sense that his missing limb is still "there." That it itches sometimes, or feels cold. As the novel progresses, I use the phantom limb syndrome as a metaphor for the felt sense of loss we all feel when something or someone is wrenched from our lives. The death of a loved one, perhaps, or a divorce. That experience we often have after such a significant loss that the person is still "here." Still walking the earth. Having lost his wife to murder, and his cop father to alcoholism, Rinaldi can easily relate to the unhappy vet's experience. Whether he can help him or not is another matter, especially when it seems the vet might be linked somehow to the kidnapping.

OMN: You mentioned that Daniel Rinaldi bears a remarkable similarity to yourself. How much more of your personal or professional experience have you included in your books?

DP: Certainly my twenty-seven years as a therapist in private practice, as well as my training at a psychiatric clinic, influence my characters: how they relate, the issues they confront. Especially how Rinaldi works with them as a therapist. Moreover, my childhood and college years in a heavily-industrial Pittsburgh serve as a vivid counter-point to contemporary Pittsburgh, whose steel mills and factories have been replaced by state-of-the-art technology firms and world-class medical facilities. I don't base my plots on things that have actually happened to patients (who thankfully have few cases of murder, bank robbery and kidnapping in their backgrounds!), though I use what actually transpires emotionally in a therapy session to inform the way Daniel Rinaldi relates to his patients. Also, my five years of training with Dr. Robert Stolorow, one of the nation's leading trauma experts, lends credibility (I hope) to those aspects of trauma and its treatment that are woven into the narratives.

OMN: Tell us more about your writing process.

DP: My writing process is completely open-ended. I neither write outlines nor character bios. I usually start with a character or situation in mind, and then just start typing. The truth is, I'd rather write than think! Of course, this means the first draft takes me down a lot of blind alleys and into assorted brick walls, but I don't mind. For one thing, you never know what such a detour will produce: a nice exchange of dialogue or a vivid description that can make its way into the final manuscript. For another, even if I write myself into a corner, I always learn something that informs the rest of the book. Maybe a character does something surprising that gives me an idea of how to use him or her in a different manner later in the story. Whatever. This is a dangerous way to write, I must admit. Sort of a high-wire act without a net. In fact, I usually don't know who the bad guy is until about halfway through the book. Then I have to go back and seed in the kinds of details that make the reveal of his or her identity credible. On the plus side, I figure that if I'm surprised, the reader will be, too.

OMN: How accurate are you to the setting of Pittsburgh in your books?

DP: I make every effort to be accurate as to setting. Though I've lived in Los Angeles for the past 40 years, I still visit Pittsburgh regularly. I also rely on maps, Google, and my family and friends still living in the Steel City to help me with certain details. While my memory of the Pittsburgh I grew up in is vivid and reliable, the new, "gentrified" Pittsburgh has changed so much that I need these resources to make sure my depiction of the city as it is now is accurate. But you bring up a funny point: whenever I hear from Pittsburgh residents about my books, it's rarely to discuss the plot or the characters. Usually it's to point out things like, "Hey, you have Rinaldi make a left on Second Avenue. You can't do that during rush hour!" Or "Nobody crosses the river on the Fort Pitt Bridge to get to Mt. Washington! What's wrong with you?" It keeps me humble, that's for sure.

OMN: What is the best advice you've received as an author?

DP: The best advice I ever got about writing actually came from an acting class I took, over three decades ago, back when I was a working Hollywood screenwriter. The teacher was Darryl Hickman, and his advice about pursuing any kind of show business career was simple but profound: "Keep giving them YOU, until YOU is what they want." In terms of writing, I think this means just write what you want, in your voice, in your own way, about things that interest you. Don't chase trends in writing, trying to emulate the latest books on the best-seller lists. Just write from the core of your authentic self, and do your best to get the work out into the world. If it's your karma, and the stars align, you'll eventually find your audience. I also very much agree with famed golfer Ben Hogan, who was asked once, given his great success, if he considered himself lucky. He answered, "Yes. And the harder I work, the luckier I get." I think that should be pasted up on every writer's wall, right above where they write.

OMN: What's next for you?

DP: As an author, I'm looking forward to writing the fifth book in the Rinaldi series. One of the pleasures of my writing process, as I mentioned previously, is how I get to surprise myself as the narrative unfolds. In other words, I can't wait to see what kind of trouble Daniel Rinaldi is going to get into next. He and I will find out together! On the personal front, the big excitement around our house pertains to our son's first year away at college, three thousand miles from home. Though our excitement is tempered by that gnawing "empty nest" syndrome that everyone warned my wife and me about. Luckily, we now have FaceBook, texts and Skype, and stay in pretty good contact with him. Which means that, to the relief of my friends and colleagues, I can point to something positive about all this new technology, instead of continuing to view it as evidence of the end of Western Civilization. (Though I think the jury's still out …)

The playwright and novelist Augustus Maltravers and his actress girlfriend Tess Davy have planned a relaxing week staying with friends in Bellringer Street, an historic thoroughfare near the grounds of Edenbridge House, stately home of the Earl of Pembury. The only foreseeable disruption looks to be the imminent arrival of their hosts' baby — which is quite disruptive enough as far as Maltravers is concerned.

But greater dramas start to unfold when a skeleton is stolen from the cellars of the House. At first it seems no more than a bizarre joke but, suddenly, Maltravers and Tess find themselves caught up in a terrifying cycle of vengeance and murder. The heir to the estate, Simon, Lord Dunford, is found murdered. Though he was a likable sort, he was thoroughly hated by his next-in-succession: his caddish cousin Oliver Hawkhurst and the estate's coldly efficient secretary, Mister York.

With everyone around them under suspicion, Maltravers and Tess find it increasingly difficult to get to the bottom of the mystery. Who had the strongest motive for murder? And will they strike again?

No one seems surprised when Cosette's body is discovered during a party she's hosting — she was struck on the head with a croquet mallet. Wanting to restore order to the small town, Myrtle resolves to track down the killer — before the killer strikes again.

An old friend of Honey Driver's is unfortunate enough to have their birthday at Hallowe'en, and can't resist making it a fancy dress party. Honey had planned for DCI Doherty, her policeman boyfriend, to go with her; he might have done if he wasn't more than a bit peeved that she smashed up his sports car.

Dressed appropriately, Honey attends the party at Moss End Hotel alone. The food is awful, the booze practically non-existent, and the complaints are loud and clear. The owners, Mr and Mrs Crook — amateurs who think themselves better than the professionals — are nowhere to be found and all the doors are locked. Once the revellers manage to open the doors, the Crooks are found, but are in no condition to deal with complaints. They're dead — murdered — and Honey and Doherty team up once more to investigate.

It is the middle of winter, and it has been bitter cold and snowing in San Marcos, the Northern California home of Morgan and Sandy Crew. They decide to take Caroline on a warm, relaxing vacation to sun and sand of the Big Island of Hawai'i. Caroline's nanny, Betsy, a college student, chooses to stay home and study for upcoming exams.

The Crews have just settled into an elegant suite in their family owned beach-side resort, when an old friend asks for help. A young Hawaiian man who was unknowingly working for the Mafia, has been murdered, and a young, beautiful, and sensuous, pure Hawaiian woman, the mother of the dead man's child, needs to know how and why.

Meanwhile, Betsy becomes deeply involved in a search for a missing fellow student, a co-ed from a well-to-do family. Fearing that the young student is in trouble, Betsy defies the advice of Police Lt. Sommers, who tells her to leave the Missing Persons Investigation to him. But she has learned a great deal from Morgan. She perseveres, forcing herself to continue in spite of the fear she feels. She finds herself in one chilling and horrifying situation after another, which may finally cost Betsy her own life.

Finding Sky by Susan O'Brien, a New 1st in Series Mystery Introducing Nicki Valentine

Finding Sky by Susan O'Brien

Omnimystery News is pleased to present you with one of this month's new 1st in Series titles, a mystery, thriller or suspense novel that introduces a recurring character (or characters) …

Finding Sky by Susan O'Brien

A Nicki Valentine Mystery (1st in series)

Publisher: Henery Press

Finding Sky by Susan O'Brien, Amazon Kindle format

What we know about the character: Nicki Valentine is a suburban mom and a PI in training. For more information about her first investigation, see a synopsis of the book, below.

She's a parent. She's (almost) a P.I. No one gets on your case like mom.

Suburban widow and P.I. in training Nicki Valentine can barely keep track of her two kids, never mind anyone else. But when her best friend's adoption plan is jeopardized by the young birth mother's disappearance, Nicki is persuaded to help. Nearly everyone else believes the teenager ran away, but Nicki trusts her BFF's judgment, and the feeling is mutual.

The case leads where few moms go (teen parties, gang shootings) and places they can't avoid (preschool parties, OB-GYNs' offices). Nicki has everything to lose and much to gain — including the attention of her unnervingly hot P.I. instructor. Thankfully, Nicki is armed with her pesky conscience, occasional babysitters, a fully stocked minivan, and nature's best defense system: women's intuition.

Mack's Bar is one of those nice, friendly places where everybody knows your name. That's great when someone's buying you a round, but not so hot when you find yourself atop a list of murder suspects — with your fingerprints on the bloody knife!

Mackenzie "Mack" Dalton is a Milwaukee bar owner with a nose for trouble — literally. A neurological glitch has left her with extra perceptive senses. So when she stumbles upon a dead body in the alley behind the bar — the same spot where her own father was shot eight months earlier — she can tell right away there's something fishy in the air.

The lead detective thinks there's a link between the two deaths, and he'll need Mack's help to sniff out the murderer amid the crowd of eccentric regulars. But when all the evidence points to her as the most likely culprit, it could be an early last call for Mack — and celebratory cocktails for a killer.
