Come to a place haunted by legends … where the search for treasure just might lead to murder …

Come to the hills of the Ozarks and meet Maggie Porter and her dogs — a champion Labrador Retriever, an aging Cocker Spaniel, and a Beagle retired from federal service. Maggie has returned home to reopen the family dog kennel business, where she's plagued by problems from the start. Serious trouble arises when a gossip-loving employee turns up dead holding an heirloom locket belonging to Maggie's mother.

More trouble arrives in the shape of anonymous threats and mysterious break-ins. And when a security crisis puts everything she loves at risk, Maggie realizes somebody doesn't want Waterside back in business.

As the region sizzles in record heat, a "Treasure of the Ozarks" campaign disrupts her quest for answers even as it breathes new life into old tales and brings out tourists and treasure hunters alike. With her loyal dogs at her side, Maggie must dig for the truth behind the violence. Along the way, she learns that everyone has something to hide — and some secrets are worth killing for.

It seems a routine case for Dr. Bill Brockton, the exhumation of a body to obtain a bone sample for a DNA paternity test. But a shocking discovery awaits Brockton and his colleagues when the coffin is opened: the corpse inside has been horribly violated. The grisly find embroils the Body Farm's founder in a dangerous investigation into a flourishing black market in body parts, as Brockton is recruited for an FBI sting to bring down a postmortem chop shop — using corpses from the Body Farm as bait.

But as he descends deeper into a ghoulish empire on the trail of a ruthless grave robber, Brockton faces a devastating choice that could compromise the investigation and place him in even graver peril. And for the sake of a damaged friend — a medical examiner who has lost his hands — Brockton may be forced to risk his principles, his freedom … and even his life.

Venetian detective Commissario Guido Brunetti is called to investigate a parent's worst nightmare. A young cadet has been found hanged, a presumed suicide, in Venice's elite military academy. Brunetti's sorrow for the boy, so close in age to his own son, is rivaled only by his contempt for a community that is more concerned with protecting the reputation of the school, and its privileged students, than understanding this tragedy.

The young man is the son of a doctor and former politician, a man of an impeccable integrity all too rare in Italian politics. Dr. Moro is clearly and understandably devastated by his son's death; but while both he and his apparently estranged wife seem convinced that the boy's death could not have been suicide, neither appears eager to talk to the police or involve Brunetti in any investigation of the circumstances in which he died.

As Brunetti pursues his inquiry, he is faced with a wall of silence. Is the military protecting its own? And what of the other witnesses? Is this the natural reluctance of Italians to involve themselves with the authorities, or is Brunetti facing a conspiracy far greater than this one death?

Rick Black and Jake McShane are former law school classmates with very different approaches to life and the law. Rick is a brilliant, ultracompetitive trial lawyer who believes winning is everything. He openly mocks the legal system, claiming that a lawyer who is a great storyteller can fool a jury every time. He is determined to exploit that weakness in our system, regardless of the havoc that wreaks on innocent lives.

When an upstanding pillar of the community is victimized by Rick's unscrupulous tactics, Jake is determined to bring his former classmate to justice — if he can do so without sacrificing his own integrity. Their approaches, skills and convictions are put to the test when they clash as opposing counsel in a high-stakes class action lawsuit.

Dirty tricks, intimidation, intrigue — even homicide — become part of the backdrop as the litigation unfolds.

What was the owner of a small-town FBO doing draped across the top of his brand-new cadillac-shot through the heart? That's what Grace and Albert Beckmann wondered as they flew their Piper Turbo Arrow in for a quick fuel stop, and found instead a murder.

The victim, James Delacroix, was a man everyone loved to hate: the partners he cheated, the children he mistreated, the women he used. And why was he wearing a ring that had disappeared in war-torn Europe over fifty years before?

The Beckmanns would have been happy to let someone else solve the crime, but fate intervened. At least, the murder gave their sons, Spence and Paul, a chance to prove themselves at everything from cyberspace to skid row survival.

Please Welcome Back Crime Novelist G. R. Case

Omnimystery News: Guest Post by G. R. Case
with G. R. Case

We are delighted to welcome back crime novelist G. R. Case to Omnimystery News.

Earlier this month we featured an excerpt from G. R.'s debut thriller 30 Days (Cool Blue Books; April 2014 trade paperback and ebook formats), and last week we had the opportunity to talk with him a little more about it.

Today G. R. tells us what storytelling means to him.

I know I will never win a Grammy Award for a heart-felt song, nor will I ever become world-renown for painting a masterpiece on canvas. I have a different type of gift that allows me to see, hear, and feel the struggles and triumphs of characters in various situations.

The art of storytelling is as old as humanity itself, whereby, it has been conducted orally to disseminate a vital cultural heritage from one generation to the next, or it is expressed through the written word. It is a privilege and honor to be able to share with readers a story that has been crafted from a vision, outline, rough draft, and finished book. Like readers, I get a chance to see characters go through a "roller-coaster" ride on the emotional spectrum. Sometimes I just want to say to the characters, "Don't do it!" However, as a novelist, I have to remain true to my craft and don't intervene with a character's journey. After all, I am only a scribe documenting a character's action as it unfolds.

I am fine with not winning a Grammy Award or not being a painter, but after years of writing many novels, maybe one day I'll carve out my place in history.
