The 6th Extinction by James Rollins

[10]: The 6th Extinction
James Rollins
— The SIGMA Force Series (11th)

A remote military research station sends out a frantic distress call, ending with a chilling final command: Kill us all! Personnel from the neighboring base rush in to discover everyone already dead-and not just the scientists, but every living thing for fifty square miles is annihilated: every animal, plant, and insect, even bacteria.

The land is entirely sterile-and the blight is spreading.

To halt the inevitable, Commander Gray Pierce and Sigma must unravel a threat that rises out of the distant past, to a time when Antarctica was green and all life on Earth balanced upon the blade of a knife. Following clues from an ancient map rescued from the lost Library of Alexandria, Sigma will discover the truth about an ancient continent, about a new form of death buried under miles of ice.

From millennia-old secrets out of the frozen past to mysteries buried deep in the darkest jungles of today, Sigma will face its greatest challenge to date: stopping the coming extinction of mankind.

But is it already too late?

Please Welcome "Small Town" Novelist Marc A. DiGiacomo

Omnimystery News: Guest Post by Marc A. DiGiacomo
with Marc A. DiGiacomo

We are delighted to welcome back novelist Marc A. DiGiacomo to Omnimystery News today.

Marc's new "Small Town" mystery is Back in Town — the second in this series — and we asked him to tell us a little more about what inspires him to write in general, and to write this series in particular.

I always believed I had a book somewhere within my warped brain. It's one thing to have that feeling about yourself but to actually write that book is a story within itself. How do you motivate one's self to follow through on a conceptualized idea? For me, I have three small children. Only my oldest will remember the late night/early morning calls from the police department notifying me of the latest crime to occur within our boundaries. He would watch his father leave with bright, wide opened eyes fully believing I would return as soon as I could. Truth be told; it was very difficult to leave him, but I had a job to do, a responsibility to others I was sworn to uphold.

When I retired from the police department after a string of back injuries and surgery, I needed to set a new course for myself. My back injury makes it difficult for me sometimes but it was just another challenge I needed to overcome. What started off as a memoir of a small town cop's career quickly grew legs and became an organized crime thriller. I had a very unique police career working for such a small town; I wanted to emphasize to others even though I worked for a small town, big crime still happens and needs to be solved.

The encouragement I received from my oldest son was all I needed. His face upon seeing In A Small Town was a priceless memory I will never forget. He's only eleven, and will not be reading any of my books for quite some time, but his praise and reassurances have motivated me to write more. So, I write for my kids, and one day, when they read my books, they will know a little piece of their father is alive and well within those pages.

Needless to say, when he found out I had written a sequel, Back In Town, he so badly wanted to read the smallest part of it. What has been the most amazing experience for me is watching his writing work over the last few years. His stories are entertaining, action packed and are much better than anything I could have written at his age. My son writes about me being his hero but little does he know, he's my hero and I'm his biggest fan too.

After working as a reality television producer for the past eight years, Victoria Sharpe knows how important it is to get the shot. When she teams up with two unwilling detectives on her latest gig, a real-life detective series called Murder Live!, her unorthodox style and in-your-face approach throws the cops for a loop.

She asks a grieving mother to redo a camera take to show stronger emotion and nearly gets kicked off the project when she decides to go undercover to try to solve the case on her own. Things get even more dicey when a romance heats up between Sharpe and one of the detectives under the disapproving eye of Sharpe's hunky cameraman and former fling.

The team must band together to solve what seems like a simple hit and run, but turns into a wicked ring of car racing and human smuggling that brings them all the way down to the Mexican border.

Nuala Kazmaroff has a gift nobody wants. She's able to tell the story behind any object simply by touch. It's a gift that comes in handy when her only brother, a detective with the Atlanta Major Crimes Division, is murdered. Determined to find his killer, Nuala reaches out to the one person in Atlanta she believes can help her — Dave's ex-partner, Jack Burton.

Unfortunately, Burton is also the prime suspect.

Together, Nuala and Jack create a partnership that breaks all the rules, skirts every law, and lobs as many sparks and landmines at each other as if they were adversaries — which half the time they are — all while attempting to ignore their undeniable mutual attraction.

Can two people so different — one intuitive and inexperienced, the other cynical and by-the-book — work together to solve the murder?

And can they do it before the killer turns his attention to Nuala?

The Kennedy Connection by R. G. Belsky, a New 1st in Series Mystery Introducing Gil Malloy

The Kennedy Connection by R. G. Belsky

Omnimystery News is pleased to present you with one of this month's new 1st in Series titles, a mystery, thriller or suspense novel that introduces a recurring character (or characters) …

The Kennedy Connection by R. G. Belsky

Gil Malloy (1st in series)

Publisher: Atria Books

The Kennedy Connection by R. G. Belsky, Amazon Kindle format

What we know about the character: Gil Malloy is a discredited newspaper reporter in New York City. For more information about his first investigation, see a synopsis of the book, below.

Half a century after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, someone is killing people on the streets of New York City and leaving behind a bizarre calling card of that tragic day in Dallas.

Gil Malloy breaks the story of the link between seemingly unconnected murders — a Kennedy half dollar coin found at each of the crime scenes. At the same time, a man emerges who claims to be the secret son of Lee Harvey Oswald and says he has new evidence that Oswald was innocent of the JFK killing.

Malloy, who has fallen from grace at the New York Daily News and sees this as an opportunity to redeem himself as an ace reporter, is certain there is a connection between the Oswald revelations and the NYC murders, but first he has to get someone to believe him. Convinced that the answers go all the way back to the JFK assassination more than fifty years ago, Malloy soon uncovers long-buried secrets that put his own life in danger from powerful forces who fear he's getting too close to the truth.

As Naples prepares for its holiday celebrations, behind the facade of order and happiness imposed by the fascist regime, lurks terrible poverty and blinding desperation. In a luxurious apartment on the Mergellina beach the bodies of a fascist militia officer and his wife have been found. The woman has had her throat cut while the man has been stabbed over sixty times. Seemingly, the hands of two separate killers have been at work. A statuette of San Giuseppe, patron saint of workers, lies in pieces on the floor.

At the scene of the crime, Ricciardi, who has the dubious gift of being able to see and hear the last seconds in the lives of those who have suffered a violent death, listens to the enigmatic last words of the couple. The extraordinary Perry Mason never handles straightforward divorce cases, but this one is an especially strange bird. Rita Swaine is dating her sister's ex-boyfriend. Her sister, Rosalind, is married to shady insurance adjuster Walter Prescott, who's got dollar signs in his eyes and ice water in his veins. When Rita's beau gallantly steps in to warn Rosalind about her heinous husband's designs, Prescott hatches a plan to prey on them all … by suing for big profit.

For Mason, this case should be a lark. But when a murdered man is found in the Prescott home — and a nosy neighbor sings an incriminating song about illicit love and a hidden gun-legal eagle Mason suddenly finds himself defending a sitting duck.
