But when her latest mission literally explodes in her face, she wakes up labeled a traitor and — even more surprising — in the custody of elite Aegis Security operative and ex-lover Zane Archer. Although she still secretly has feelings for Zane, he's now demanding the one thing that she can't give him: the truth.

When he caught her breaking the rules years ago, Zane let Eve walk away without an explanation. Now someone has not only sabotaged Aegis but also turned an American city into a war zone, and all signs point to Eve. When televangelist Peter Boothe decides to build a megachurch on the banks of the Pedernales River, he thinks his biggest problem will be a few unhappy neighbors. However, when backhoe operator Hollis Farley unearths a rare fossil on the construction site — a discovery that could lead to plenty of embarrassing Darwinian publicity — the cover-up begins. Soon, Farley is dead, shot in the back with an arrow, and Game Warden John Marlin is asked to help with the case.

What he and the local deputies find is a suspect list of biblical proportions: Could it have been the bitter geology professor? The private fossil collector with a somewhat unusual fetish? The minister's wife who takes the Commandments rather lightly? Or the geriatric environmentalist with a mean right hook?

Nothing is sacred in this twisted tale of greed, corruption, infidelity, and, yes, paleontology.

Elle Harrison and her pals Jen, Becky, and Susan travel to Mexico where Jen has arranged cosmetic surgery, after which she will recover in a plush hotel suite. But more is going on at the hotel than tummy tucks. Soon after they arrive, Elle sees the woman in the suite next door fall from her sixth floor balcony. When the room is later occupied by another patient, Elle finds her brutally mutilated body on that same balcony.

Police question Elle as the last person to see these women alive. Their doctor also takes an interest in Elle; a woman staying at the hotel asks Elle to help her fend off a creepy stalker; a veiled woman sneaks into Elle's suite at night, and her late husband, Charlie, reappears (or Elle imagines that he does) when Elle gets pushed under water in the ocean and nearly drowns.

As dangers swirl and intensify, Elle is forced to face her unresolved issues with Charlie, even as she races to find the connections between killings before more patients-including Jen-can be murdered. And before she herself becomes prey.

On the cusp of realizing her dream as a career military attorney, Captain Tracy Keener is ordered to defend Captain Adam Burke, a Special Operations officer accused of abandoning his team and leaving them to die. Everyone knows he's guilty and defending him will cost Tracy her career, but she has no choice.

Captain Burke swears he was framed. Swears he'd acted under orders. Swears things that can't possibly be true: breaches requiring corruption at the highest levels, the deliberate sacrifice of an entire military team. Impossible!

Until they're proven fact. Under cease and desist orders and then threats to drop the case and let Burke go down, Tracy and Adam rebel, push for truth … and are targeted for assassination. To their horror, they discover others too are marked for death — millions of Americans Adam and she swore an oath to defend at any cost, including their own lives.

Yet to succeed, Tracy and Adam must risk more than their lives. They must risk their hearts. That proves far harder when trapped in an intricate web of duplicity.

Please Welcome Novelist Warren Adler

Omnimystery News: Guest Post by Warren Adler
with Warren Adler

We are delighted to welcome back novelist Warren Adler to Omnimystery News.

Earlier this month we had a chance to catch up with Warren, whose first Fiona Fitzgerald mystery, American Quartet, was recently reissued in a new digital format.

We asked him to tell us a little more about the character, and he titles his guest post for us today, "The Women Behind the Fiona Fitzgerald Mystery Series".

Detective Fiona Fitzgerald is an unlikely force for justice in Washington D.C's predominantly male police force. As a prominent senator's daughter and top investigator in the homicide division of the Metropolitan Police Department, Fiona maneuvers between two vastly different worlds, moving quickly from opulent State galas to gritty crime scenes. Born into the elite social circles of the nation's capital, and with privileged access to what lurks behind the pristine façade of the political establishment, Fiona is determined to expose the chicanery buried under prim rose bushes and concealed within the highest echelons of the American political aristocracy.

It was the early eighties and mass media consensus on gender was undergoing a massive change. Women were on the march, and the emphasis was on upward mobility and equality on all fronts, especially in the workplace.

In the culture of literary fiction, the concept of the heroic figure was becoming "genderized;" the notion of the cop, soldier, firefighter, construction worker, and other jobs once considered male turf only, was swiftly transforming.

Although I had never tackled the mystery genre, growing in popularity at the time, my agent persuaded me to take the plunge. I lived in the Washington metropolitan area where I had been well connected with the political and social scene; I had previously served as the White House correspondent during the Korean War, was the co-owner of Washington Dossier Magazine, as well as worked as a campaign strategist to President Richard Nixon. I decided to use the police department that covered the nation's Capitol as my focal point. In casting around for a knowledgeable member of the force who could give me some insight into the inner workings of the department and their own psyche, I was lucky to find an experienced female homicide detective who happened to be no stranger to attending glittery dinner parties with a revolver tucked in her evening bag. Her name was Judy Roberts and she led me deep into the entrails of the mindset and procedure of police work.

When I first suggested that she would make a terrific character in my novel, Ms. Roberts replied, "You've got to be kidding." But, with ten years of experience with the local police force under her belt, she had done it all — chased burglars, investigated murders, witnessed one too many autopsies, and attended Ronald Reagan's inaugural with her shoulder holster strapped under her evening gown. With a little persuasion, Roberts was on board. Because I was familiar with the political and social circles of the power elite in Washington, I conceived the idea of Fiona working solely on cases involving the Washington upper crust but as seen through the lens of a woman used to straddling opposite worlds socially and politically.

The first title in the series was American Quartet, a New York Times Notable Crime Book. A string of inexplicable murders has Fiona charging through the shadows of a mysterious conspiracy. Her reputation and career blunder, however, through an investigation with no leads. At the brink of her professional demise, an encounter with the eccentric yet charismatic Thaddeus Remington III at his museum-like mansion sends Fiona hurtling through a whirlwind of clues. Where once the desperate detective rummaged through traceless footsteps of a triple murderer, the key to solving her case is now whispered to her from the bloodstained graves of fallen Presidents.

In the following books, American Sextet, Death of a Washington Madame, The Witch of Watergate, Senator Love, Immaculate Deception, The Ties that Bind, and Washington Masquerade, Detective Fiona Fitzgerald continues to be ensconced in the heady precincts of elite Washington with each new predicament more riddled than the former. The ninth and newest addition to the series, Red Herring, is slated to be released this year.

A curmudgeon. An iconoclast. A loner. That's how people describe Garrison Gage, and that's when they're being charitable.

After his wife's brutal murder in New York, and Gage himself is beaten nearly to death, the crippled private investigator retreats three thousand miles to the quaint coastal town of Barnacle Bluffs, Oregon. He spends the next five years in a convalescent stupor, content to bide his time filling out crossword puzzles and trying to forget that his wife's death is his fault. But all that changes when he discovers the body of a young woman washed up on the beach, and his conscience draws him back into his old occupation — forcing him to confront the demons of his own guilt before he can hope to solve the girl's murder.
