A Tubby Dubonnet Mystery
Publisher: booksBnimble

It's a city of sin. And murder is only one of them.

New Orleans Attorney Tubby Dubonnet is getting tired of his slow-moving, indolent city — with all its dirt and dancing, its colorful characters and corruption. For Tubby, a change of scenery might be in order, until a moralistic crusading prosecutor tries to destroy the career and reputation of Tubby's favorite judge.

Suddenly Tubby has a good reason to get out of bed in the morning. Because a little matter of office sex has turned into a nasty mystery of murder, rape, and suicide, real and imagined. And with more than a fair share of femmes fatales around him, and some dangerous criminals masquerading as reputable businessmen, Tubby suddenly has a lot more to do than avoid his next bottle and plot his next meal: he needs a lucky break — just to stay alive.

Review: Nearly Gone by Elle Cosimano

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of Nearly Gone by Elle Cosimano. A Nearly Boswell Mystery.

Review summary: There are several aspects to this mystery that are quite compelling. The science and math clues make for a great puzzle and the whodunit element is very well handled. The lead character is creatively drawn, and should appeal to the intended audience of teen readers. There are a couple of drawbacks to the story, but on balance a very good start to this series. Our rating: 4 of 5 stars

A Nearly Boswell Mystery
Kathy Dawson Books (March 2014)

Publisher synopsis: Nearly Boswell knows how to keep secrets. Living in a DC trailer park, she knows better than to share anything that would make her a target with her classmates. Like her mother's job as an exotic dancer, her obsession with the personal ads, and especially the emotions she can taste when she brushes against someone's skin. But when a serial killer goes on a killing spree and starts attacking students, leaving cryptic ads in the newspaper that only Nearly can decipher, she confides in the one person she shouldn't trust: the new guy at school — a reformed bad boy working undercover for the police, doing surveillance … on her.

Nearly might be the one person who can put all the clues together, and if she doesn't figure it all out soon — she'll be next.

Read our review of Fatal Decree by H. Terrell Griffin

When a serial killer shows up on Longboat Key, Florida after a twelve year absence, Matt Royal is stymied. The first woman killed on Longboat Key has ties to a secretive government agency for which Matt's best friend Jock Algren works. Was this a coincidence or was she a targeted kill?

Matt's friend, Longboat Key detective Jennifer Diane (J.D.) Duncan investigates the murders but also seems to be a target of the killer. Why? And where has the killer been for the past twelve years? And why has he come to Longboat Key when his earlier kills were all in Miami?

The mystery deepens when Guatemalan gang-bangers try to kill Matt and J.D. and suspicions grow that Mexican drug cartels are somehow involved. The director of Jock's agency orders him to do whatever is necessary to find the killer because of the death of the woman with connections to the agency. Will Jock simply take out the murderer or allow J.D. and the law to arrest, try and convict the bad guys?

Matt's life is further complicated by J.D.'s growing dissatisfaction with island living and her thoughts of returning to Miami.

But like the illusions found in the carnival's House of Mirrors, nothing is as it appears. Just beyond the looking glass is where evil watches from a one-way mirror.

Unfortunately, the Grisby heir will not live to see it — he's been poisoned. Dennis Lehane's Novel Based on his Film Screenplay The Drop to be Published in August 2014

The Drop; Screenplay by Dennis Lehane

The Drop, a crime thriller starring Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace, and the late James Gandolfini with a screenplay by Dennis Lehane, is due to open in theaters in September 2014 but a month before that a novel of the same title is scheduled to be published by William Morrow.

"Early this year, my publisher asked me to consider writing a novel version, which I normally would have balked at," Lehane told The Boston Globe. "But there was all this stuff I loved from the original novel and then all this other stuff I loved that got cut from the script and still more scenes I loved that ended up being cut from the film itself, and I thought it might all make a really cool book."

The "original novel" that Lehane mentions is an unpublished book he wrote over 10 years ago that served as the basis for his short story "Animal Rescue", which was published in the 2009 anthology Boston Noir. It is this short story, about a killing resulting from a lost and contested pit bull, that inspired the film The Drop.

No synopsis yet on The Drop (the novel), but look for it on August 19th, 2014.
