The only problem — the man fled the library earlier that day, and after checking his credentials, the American professor doesn't exist.

The Arctic Event by James H. Cobb
A Covert-One Thriller
Publisher: Grand Central

On a remote island in the Canadian Arctic, researchers discover the wreckage of a mysterious World War II-era aircraft, a discovery that forces the Russian Federation into a shocking admission. The unmarked plane is a Soviet strategic bomber that disappeared with its crew more than fifty years ago while carrying two metric tons of weaponized anthrax.

Desperate to prevent a political and diplomatic firestorm, the U.S. president dispatches a Covert-One team led by Lieutenant Colonel Jon Smith to the crash site. But others have reached the frigid, windswept island first, including an international arms dealer and his crew of vicious mercenaries. As for the Russians, they are lying: a second, even deadlier secret rests within the hulk of the lost bomber, a secret the Russians are willing to kill to protect.

Trapped in a polar wilderness, Smith and his team find themselves fighting a savage war on two front--against an enemy they can see and another hiding within their own ranks.

A New MystereBook: Kyd for Hire by Timothy Harris

New MystereBooks (Mystery eBooks)

Here is a mystery, suspense, or thriller ebook that we recently found by sleuthing (as it were) through new or recently reissued titles from independent publishers during April 2014 priced $4.99 or less …

Kyd for Hire by Timothy Harris is the second thriller in this series featuring private investigator Thomas Kyd.

A Thomas Kyd Thriller
Publisher: Endeavour Press
Publication Date: April 04, 2014
Price: $3.99 (as of 04/05/14 12:30 PM ET)

From the moment that the millionaire Joe Elevel enters the LA office of private detective Thomas Kyd, Kyd knows that this investigation will prove a little more challenging than the divorce cases from which he's been making a living.

Elevel's high-society world has crumbled. His genteel, philanthropic wife is dead by suicide, and the note she left behind hints at a terrible crime. "Charlotte knows" she states. But Charlotte — the Elevel's daughter — has disappeared.

The case proves to be far more than just a family affair, however. Three days later Kyd finds himself dealing with "one suicide, three murders, and a case that had about as much symmetry as a half-digested pizza &hellip" and searching the darkest corners of the city to find the answers.

With both the bribe-taking Deputy Chief Granville and a professional hitman with no fingerprints working against him, solving the mystery proves a high-risk endeavour. Even for tough, straight-talking Kyd, downtown Los Angeles has never been hotter, dirtier or more dangerous.

Chuck Hogan to Write Screenplay for The Rockford Files Starring Vince Vaughn

The Rockford Files

Three years ago NBC shelved its planned television remake of The Rockford Files to the cheers of many of its fans.

But now we're learning (via Deadline) that Universal Pictures is moving forward with a theatrical remake to star Vince Vaughn as Malibu PI Jim Rockford, first played on television by James Garner.

Chuck Hogan will write the screenplay. Actually, rewrite, as a script already exists, written by David Levien and Brian Koppelman.

This project is so unnecessary, but we'll be following along to see where it leads.

An Excerpt from The Collector of Dying Breaths by M. J. Rose

The Collector of Dying Breaths by M. J. Rose

We are delighted to welcome novelist M. J. Rose to Omnimystery News today.

M. J. is touring this month to promote her new novel of suspense The Collector of Dying Breaths (Atria; April 2014 hardcover, audio and ebook formats), a lush and imaginative novel that crisscrosses time as a perfumer and a mythologist search for the fine line between potion and poison, poison and passion … and past and present.

We are pleased to introduce you to the book with an excerpt from Chapter 19.

The Collector of Dying Breaths by M. J. Rose

THAT NIGHT, JAC FELL ASLEEP EASILY, cosseted by the down pillows and comforter. Her dreams were full of the perfumer who had lived here so many centuries ago. In his secret laboratory, she saw him mixing up potions and recipes, stirring, shaking and sniffing. At one point he picked up his head and looked right at her, as if she were in the room with him, as if he could actually see her. And then he spoke to her. All this I do for you. To see you again. To be with you again. Please God, it will work. Because without you I am lost to the world.

In her sleep Jac felt the power of his words like a perfumed wind, blowing around her, embracing her. The most profound sense of longing overwhelmed her. Jac tried to go to him. Tried to move toward him. Wanted him to take her in his arms. Want to bury her face in his chest and have him stroke her hair. Wanted to feel his rough lips bruising hers. Oh, how she wanted him. But she was a half a millennium away. And they were forever separated by time.

She woke up suddenly. Soaked with sweat. The perfumer had seemed so familiar to her. Her feelings for him were the same as her feelings for Griffin. Was it possible that-No. She would not entertain the thought. But she couldn't escape it, could she? Jac could almost hear Malachai asking her how she could even question what the dream revealed: that in a previous incarnation Griffin had most likely lived a life as the perfumer. Time was coming full circle again.

The Collector of Dying Breaths
M. J. Rose
A Novel of Suspense

Florence, Italy — 1533: An orphan named René le Florentin is plucked from poverty to become Catherine de Medici's perfumer. Traveling with the young duchessina from Italy to France, René brings with him a cache of secret documents from the monastery where he was trained: recipes for exotic fragrances and potent medicines — and a formula for an alchemic process said to have the potential to reanimate the dead. In France, René becomes not only the greatest perfumer in the country but the most dangerous, creating deadly poisons for his Queen to use against her rivals. But while mixing herbs and essences under the light of flickering candles, Rene doesn't begin to imagine the tragic and personal consequences for which his lethal potions will be responsible.

Paris, France — The Present: A renowned mythologist, Jac L'Etoile, is trying to recover from personal heartache by throwing herself into her work, learns of the 16th century perfumer who may have been working on an elixir that would unlock the secret to immortality. She becomes obsessed with René le Florentin's work — particularly when she discovers the dying breathes he had collected during his lifetime. Jac's efforts put her in the path of her estranged lover, Griffin North, a linguist who has already begun translating René le Florentin's mysterious formula. Together they confront an eccentric heiress in possession of a world-class art collection. A woman who has her own dark purpose for the elixir … a purpose for which she believes the ends will justify her deadly means.

Top-flight English goalkeeper Ian Chapel's last soccer game ended in a kick to the face from a German opponent leaving him with just one eye and believing he could never play the game again.

Working as an editor for one of his brainy brother's sports magazines, Chapel has recovered his fitness, but hasn't touched a soccer ball since his accident. So, he finds it ludicrous when his old army colonel pitches a proposal with him playing goalie for the Los Angeles Ravens, an American indoor soccer team owned by the colonel and his partner Nina Brisbane, who has the body of a goddess and hides her shotgun-blasted face forever behind a veil.

The Ravens are headed for the league finals, but their goalie has just been murdered, and if Chapel takes the job, the colonel and Miss Brisbane would like him to clear up the murder as well.

With much reluctance Chapel caves into pressure, whips himself into good goalie shape, joins the team — which includes the German player who put his eye out — dodges murderous attacks from Irish terrorists, and copes with the very temperamental Miss Brisbane, all the while enjoying the close companionship of the Ravens' second-string goalie, a very fit, ambitious, and pretty young lady.

Publisher: Ray Jordan

Glenn should have gone home for Thanksgiving. Then, maybe only one of his friends would have died. Who knew that these five young adults, alone in a college dorm, could cause so much tragic mayhem? Sure, some drunken debauchery would have been only natural, but murder? This was no ordinary Friday at Tomlin University.

Who in this dorm could possibly kill? Glenn himself is quiet and understated, his intense emotions only showing during times of crisis. His roommate, Craig, is a rebellious goof, but harmless … most of the time. His crush, the adorable Ashley, might have some secrets from her past in Alabama, but surely nothing major. Eric, from down the hall, is merely a passive, baby-faced jerk with a heart made of hemp. And then there's Sasha, a gorgeous, spoiled rich girl who certainly destroys morals and values … but not lives.

One of them dies on the morning of Black Friday, during an unprecedented blizzard that isolates the dorm from help. Glenn investigates; he has to. He needs to know why. He has to pick at it, like a fresh scab and, naturally, more blood will be spilled. As the murder comes into focus, Glenn gets to know his friends, his enemies and even himself a lot better. Most of what he sees, he doesn't like … but he will get to the truth.

A Rachel Blackstone Paranormal Mystery
Publisher: Chamisa Canyon Publishing

Reluctant Medium Rachel Blackstone watches in horror as a friend vanishes into a painting at a posh Santa Fe gallery. Unable to find her by normal methods, the reporter must look for her via the astral plane. There she will meet her most frightening nemesis and defend herself on the Terror of the Threshold. Will it be the Mesoamerican deity who enjoys human snacks or the evil spirit she crossed paths with before? What she doesn't expect is to land in an ancient civilization intent on keeping her — and her unproven powers. Part of this territory is inhabited by gentle people, flora and fauna that communicate telepathically. But the other residents are decidedly ruthless. Legend says the lost continent of Lemuria sank eons ago. Rachel's visit must be brief or she could be caught up in the cataclysm. She employs crystal power to help her communicate with friend Chloe back home in New Mexico and to defend herself from cosmological attacks.

In Santa Fe, Chloe and soul navigator F Dominic Magellan search frantically for the body of their friend in its altered state. They must return it to the art gallery so she can reclaim it. That proves difficult when they run across someone, or something, who will do anything to stop them.

On the astral plane, Rachel has to multitask, coping with earthquakes and volcanoes as the end of the long-lost culture is set in motion, all while staging the rescue of her friend. Catching the red-eye home to the 21st century could prove difficult as she desperately looks for a way to escape a violent society. They must find Rachel's silver cord or they cannot return.

Can Rachel become a successful astral-naut? Or will she be forever lost in the cosmos?
