Review: Staged To Death by Karen Rose Smith

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of Staged To Death by Karen Rose Smith. A Caprice De Luca Mystery.

Review summary: This first in series title has all the requisite elements of a cozy mystery but they are put together in a by-the-numbers manner, with little to generate much interest or excitement in either the murder investigation or its outcome. A pleasant, fast-reading mystery but not an altogether memorable one. (Click here for text of full review.)

The Chief of Bay Ridge by Robert Anthony

A Crime Thriller
Publisher: Bergen Beach Publishing
Price: $1.99 (as of 02/19/14 04:00 PM ET)

At thirty-six years old, Brian Geromina already had quite a diverse life before joining the NYPD. He was an amateur boxing champ as a kid, did an eight year stint in the Army (including a tour in the Gulf), and then spent eight more behind the bar of a Brooklyn mob-joint, owned by mafia Capo "Allie-Boy" Grasso. It's a resume that gave the "rookie" cop certain skills, street-smarts and instincts, most others don't possess. However, this will prove to be both a blessing and a curse in his new career. His no-nonsense attitude, short-temper and quick hands, soon put him out of favor with his captain; but his instincts will lead him to a Saudi sheik with a shady past, preaching at a Bay Ridge Islamic mosque. Though the tenacious cop (known as "Geronimo" by his peers) pleas for an investigation; his requests fall on the deaf ears of NYPD brass — despite the recent attacks of 9/11.

While struggling with a personal tragedy, he starts a probe of his own, and manages to acquire circumstantial evidence linking the sheik and mosque to a potential terror plot and murder. Despite his findings, he's still unable to sway his superiors; leaving him no choice but to take matters into his own hands. But to do so, he'll need to call upon all of his special skills, and make a "Deal with the Devil" — something he swore he'd never do.

However, he'll soon learn that all is not as it seems, and find himself deep in the middle of something he wasn't prepared for. Although his initial intentions were well-meant; when his world gets turned upside down, he's forced to take measures he would never have imagined — especially when it becomes personal.

The Chase
Janet Evanovich and Lee Goldberg
Series: Nicolas Fox and Kate O'Hare (2nd)

Internationally renowned thief and con artist Nicolas Fox is famous for running elaborate and daring scams. His greatest con of all: convincing the FBI to team him up with the only person who has ever caught him, and the only woman to ever capture his attention, Special Agent Kate O'Hare. Together they'll go undercover to swindle and catch the world's most wanted — and untouchable — criminals.

Their newest target is Carter Grove, a former White House chief of staff and the ruthless leader of a private security agency. Grove has stolen a rare Chinese artifact from the Smithsonian, a crime that will torpedo U.S. relations with China if it ever becomes public. Nick and Kate must work under the radar — and against the clock — to devise a plan to steal the piece back. Confronting Grove's elite assassins, Nick and Kate rely on the skills of their ragtag crew, including a flamboyant actor, a Geek Squad techie, and a band of AARP-card-carrying mercenaries led by none other than Kate's dad.

A daring heist and a deadly chase lead Nick and Kate from Washington, D.C., to Shanghai, from the highlands of Scotland to the underbelly of Montreal. But it'll take more than death threats, trained henchmen, sleepless nights, and the fate of a dynasty's priceless heirloom to outsmart Fox and O'Hare.

Lynda La Plante Planning Prequel to Prime Suspect

Book News: Mysteries, Suspense and Crime Novels, Thrillers

Crime novelist Lynda La Plante is planning to write a prequel to her successful television series, Prime Suspect.

Titled Tennison, the book is scheduled to be published in 2015. She also plans to adapt it for a made-for-television movie to air in 2016.

"When you first meet her (Tennison) in the early 90s, she is a very complex character, but what made her so?" La Plante said in a press release. "Nobody knows what drove her to become a DCI or want to join the police force in the first place."

When asked by BBC Radio 4's Front Row whether Helen Mirren, who played the character of Jane Tennison in the television series, would return for a minor role, the author said, "I would love to even approach her to consider it but I feel she has carved out such an impressive career. I really doubt she would want to go back."

No plot details for the book were released, but La Plante did say that Tennison's case would likely center around the murder of a young woman.
