Based on the true story of the greatest treasure hunt in history, this action-thriller focuses on an unlikely World War II platoon, tasked by FDR with going into Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and returning them to their rightful owners. It would be an impossible mission: with the art trapped behind enemy lines, and with the German army under orders to destroy everything as the Reich fell, how could these guys — seven museum directors, curators, and art historians, all more familiar with Michelangelo than the M-1 — possibly hope to succeed?

But as the Monuments Men, as they were called, found themselves in a race against time to avoid the destruction of 1000 years of culture, they would risk their lives to protect and defend mankind's greatest achievements.

Directed by George Clooney from and adapted screenplay co-written with Grant Heslov, and based on the book of the same title by Robert M. Edsel and Bret Witter.

Running time: 118 minutes. Rated PG-13 for some images of war violence and historical smoking.

Winners of the 2013 Florida Book Awards Announced

The winners of the 2013 Florida Book Awards have been announced, honoring the Sunshine State's best books and their authors. While not strictly an award for crime fiction, many mystery, suspense, and thriller novels have been recognized in the past.

In General Fiction, the Gold award went to Randy Wayne White for his second Hannah Smith mystery, Deceived (Putnam).

In Popular Fiction, the Silver award went to Brad Meltzer for the second Beecher White thriller, The Fifth Assassin (Grand Central Publishing), with the Bronze award going to Alex Kava for his latest Maggie O'Dell mystery, Stranded (Doubleday).

A Mysterious Review of Winter Sky by Patricia Reilly Giff.

Review summary: This is a very sweet, really quite remarkable novel. It's clear that the central character feels the weight of the world on her shoulders. She has to honor her mother's dying wish to look out for her father all the while protecting her father from a suspected arsonist, someone who may be her best friend. Highly recommended for its intended audience of middle grade readers, and their parents, too. (Click here for text of full review.)
