A Brady Coyne Mystery (1st in series)
Publisher: Open Road

A Boston lawyer investigates a prep school teacher's suspicious suicide …

Brady Coyne never meant to become the private lawyer to New England's upper crust, but after more than a decade working for Florence Gresham and her friends, he has developed a reputation for discretion that the rich cannot resist. He is fond of Mrs. Gresham — unflappable, uncouth, and never tardy with a check — and he has seen her through her husband's suicide and her first son's death in Vietnam. But he has never seen her crack until the day her second son, George, leaps into the sea at jagged Charity's Point.

The authorities call it a suicide, but Mrs. Gresham cannot believe her son, like his father, would take his own life. As Brady digs into the apparently blemish-free past of this upper-class prep school history teacher, he finds dark secrets. George Gresham may not have been suicidal, but that doesn't mean he wasn't in trouble.

When Nora Sheldon's husband is kidnapped while they're on their honeymoon, all her hopes and plans tumble into a nightmare. Then the FBI comes knocking. Turns out Nora doesn't know her husband as well as she thought she did, and the feds are equally anxious about Skip's fate.

Is Skip Sheldon a con man or some kind of Robin Hood or simply misunderstood? And if he really loved her, why did he drag her into this mess?

She'd interrogate and then throttle him herself (and save his kidnappers the trouble) if she could — but she's not so sure he's still alive to bear the brunt of her worry.

Nora and her stalwart executive assistant, Clarice, seek refuge on one of Skip's properties — an abandoned poor farm on the edge of the Dark Divide in Washington State — to wait for a ransom call and entertain obnoxious FBI agents.

Can Nora wriggle through the maze of Skip's accounts and questionable acquaintances before she falls under suspicion herself? And for what crimes, exactly? She wishes she knew.

Bad Boy by Peter Robinson
An Alan Banks Mystery (19th in series)
Publisher: HarperCollins

A distraught woman arrives at the Eastvale police station desperate to speak to Detective Chief Inspector Alan Banks. But since Banks is away on holiday, his partner, Annie Cabbot, steps in. The woman tells Annie that she's found a loaded gun hidden in the bedroom of her daughter, Erin — a punishable offense under English law. When an armed response team breaks into the house to retrieve the weapon, the seemingly straightforward procedure quickly spirals out of control.

But trouble is only beginning for Annie, the Eastvale force, and Banks, and this time, the fallout may finally do the iconoclastic inspector in. For it turns out that Erin's best friend and roommate is none other than Tracy Banks, the DCI's daughter, who was last seen racing off to warn the owner of the gun, a very bad boy indeed.

Thrust into a complicated and dangerous case intertwining the personal and the professional as never before, Annie and Banks — a bit of a bad boy himself — must risk everything to outsmart a smooth and devious psychopath. Both Annie and Banks understand that it's not just his career hanging in the balance, it's also his daughter's life.
