Mystery Bestsellers for the Week Ending January 17, 2014

Bestselling Crime Fiction: Hardcover Mysteries, Suspense Novels and Thrillers

A list of the top 15 Mystery Hardcover Bestsellers for the week ending January 17th, 2014 has been posted by the Hidden Staircase Mystery Books.

John Grisham's legal thriller Sycamore Row remains at number one but in a somewhat surprising move, Gillian Flynn's bestseller Gone Girl moves strongly up to the second spot (possibly in response to all the news surrounding the film adaptation of this novel).

One new titles enters the list this week (rank in [brackets]).

The Dead in Their Vaulted Arches by Alan Bradley

[13]: The Dead in Their Vaulted Arches
Alan Bradley
— Flavia de Luce (6th)

On a spring morning in 1951, eleven-year-old chemist and aspiring detective Flavia de Luce gathers with her family at the railway station, awaiting the return of her long-lost mother, Harriet. Yet upon the train's arrival in the English village of Bishop's Lacey, Flavia is approached by a tall stranger who whispers a cryptic message into her ear. Moments later, he is dead, mysteriously pushed under the train by someone in the crowd. Who was this man, what did his words mean, and why were they intended for Flavia?

Back home at Buckshaw, the de Luces' crumbling estate, Flavia puts her sleuthing skills to the test. Following a trail of clues sparked by the discovery of a reel of film stashed away in the attic, she unravels the deepest secrets of the de Luce clan, involving none other than Winston Churchill himself.

Surrounded by family, friends, and a famous pathologist from the Home Office — and making spectacular use of Harriet's beloved Gipsy Moth plane, Blithe Spirit — Flavia will do anything, even take to the skies, to land a killer.

Review: A Basket of Trouble by Beth Groundwater

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of A Basket of Trouble by Beth Groundwater. A Claire Hanover Mystery.

Review summary: This is a well-structured murder mystery set on the grounds of a stable and involves, indeed requires, a horse to help solve the crime, relegating the presumed theme of the series, gift baskets, far in the background. A generally enjoyable if not exactly memorable entry in this cozy series. (Click here for text of full review.)

The Civil Rights Movement is less than a distant memory to Lisa Waldren — it is someone else's memory altogether, passed on to her through the pages of history. Her life as a federal prosecutor in Boston feels utterly remote from the marches in the South that changed her father's generation — and the entire nation — forever.

But the truth is, she was there.

When a photograph surfaces showing a blond, four-year-old Lisa playing with an African-American girl at civil rights march in Fort Worth, Lisa is faced with a jarring revelation: the girls may have been the only witnesses who observed the real killer of civil rights leader Benjamin Gray … and therefore the only ones who can exonerate the death row inmate falsely accused of the murder.

Soon, Lisa finds herself in the dangerous world her father had shielded her from as a child. After some searching, the Waldrens find the other little girl from the photo and, in the process, uncover conspiracy mere steps away from the likes of Bobby Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, and J. Edgar Hoover.
