Ken Olson thought he had it all — a loving wife, a beautiful baby, and a career on the fast track. But soon after his big promotion, his whole world is shattered by a monstrous crime. A crime committed by the CEO of his own company. A crime his company will cover up at any cost.

Stripped of everything but his passion to bring the CEO to justice, Olson uncovers the dark and dangerous world behind the corporate jets and executive mansions — the private armies of mercenary killers who do the corporation’s dirtiest work under the guise of "plausible deniability", the offshore banking havens with their clandestine black-hole accounts, and the relentless greed of the lucky few at the top.

Olson's struggle pits him against a host of deadly rivals — the most brutal killer in the international private military underworld, the network anchorwoman with a beautiful face and not a hint of conscience, the aristocrat who pulls the strings of power and never dirties his hands, the hot young actress who makes sex a tool of deception, and, of course, his own chief executive, a bloodthirsty psychopath who has hijacked the corner office.

Review: The Raven's Eye by Barry Maitland

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of The Raven's Eye by Barry Maitland. A Brock and Kolla Mystery.

Review summary: This is a multi-layered crime novel, centered primarily on DI Kathy Kolla while DCI Brock deals with the new commander and all the politics that accompany any change in leadership. The multiple storylines are interesting in and of themselves, but how they are interwoven makes for an exceptionally satisfying mystery. (Click here for text of full review.)

Our rating: 4 of 5 stars

A Brock and Kolla Mystery
Minotaur Books (October 2011)

Publisher synopsis: DI Kathy Kolla of Scotland Yard is called in as a matter of course by the local Paddington police when a woman turns up dead in what appears to be an accident. On her houseboat, Vicky Hawks is found by one of her neighbors having apparently succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning due to improper ventilation of the narrowboat's heating system. But while the cause of death seems apparent and there's no reason for Kolla to think otherwise, something about this death still bothers her.

Meanwhile, her boss, DCI Brock, is wrestling with harsh budget cuts and a new Commander who is determined to make fundamental changes to the system — including limiting resources devoted to investigations. Struggling against the limitations imposed by the new order at Scotland Yard, Brock and Kolla find themselves pulling at the loose strings in the death of Vicky Hawks, trying to find out who she really was, what she was up to, and how her death might be related to another earlier tragic accidental death.

Telemystery: ABC Orders Two Pilots for Serial Murder Mystery Dramas

Telemystery: Mystery and Suspense on Television

ABC has ordered pilots for two serial murder mystery dramas.

First is one that we reported on last August when it the project was in the early stages of development: How To Get Away With Murder from Shonda Rhimes's Shondaland. The premise is a group of ambitious law students and their brilliant, mysterious criminal defense professor become involved in a murder plot that will rock the entire university and change the course of their lives. Peter Nowalk will write the script.

Second is Sea of Fire, adapted from the Dutch thriller Vuurzee, which we first reported about in Fall 2012 but did not get past the script stage. Vuurzee, which ran for two seasons in The Netherlands, is set in the fictional resort community of Boedzand and centers around the disappearance of a teenaged girl, an event that polarizes the town. Jenna Bans will write the screenplay for the pilot.

Innocent Blood
James Rollins and Rebecca Cantrell
Series: Order of the Sanguines (2nd)

A vicious attack at a ranch in California thrusts archaeologist Erin Granger back into the folds of the Sanguines, an immortal order founded on the blood of Christ and tasked with protecting the world from the beasts haunting its shadows and waiting to break free into the sunlight. Following the prophetic words found in the Blood Gospel — a tome written by Christ and lost for centuries — Erin must join forces with Army Sergeant Jordan Stone and the dark mystery that is Father Rhun Korza to discover and protect a boy believed to be an angel given flesh.

But an enigmatic enemy of immense power and terrifying ambition seeks the same child — not to save the world, but to hasten its destruction. For any hope of victory, Erin must discover the truth behind Christ's early years and understand His first true miracle, an event wrapped in sin and destruction, an act that yet remains unfulfilled and holds the only hope for the world.

The search for the truth will take Erin and the others across centuries and around the world, from the dusty plains of the Holy Land to the icy waters of the Arctic Ocean, from the catacombs of Rome to an iron fortress in the Mediterranean Sea, and at last to the very gates of Hell itself, where their destiny — and the fate of mankind — awaits.

The Poisoned Pencil Announces Debut Title, Death Spiral by Janie Chodosh

The Poisoned Pencil

The Poisoned Pencil, the new young adult mystery imprint of Poisoned Pen Press, has announced its debut title: Death Spiral by Janie Chodosh.

"Typically, young adult fiction is published without categories or subgenres, unlike adult fiction, which is published with any number of subcategories, such as romance, mystery, thriller, science fiction, and others," said Robert Rosenwald, Publisher at The Poisoned Pencil. "YA, to most publishers, is just an age designation with an untapped market. For us, it's a chance to give mysteries to an audience that is constantly facing the unknown, the unexpected, and even the dangerous."

Death Spiral seems like an apt first choice for the imprint. Here's a synopsis:

Faith Flores is a work in progress. She wants to go to college and study science, but she's not exactly college material. Thanks to her junkie mom, Faith has never known a stable life.  But when her mom drops dead, Faith is the only one who cries. The cops say it was an overdose, but Faith doesn't buy it.   Her search for the truth leads Faith from the drug houses and methadone clinics of North Philly to the million-dollar science labs of the pharmaceutical industry.

Death Spiral will be published in April 2014 in trade paperback and ebook format.
