Tall Man in Ray-Bans by Joseph Flynn

Tall Man in Ray-Bans
Joseph Flynn
A John Tall Wolf Novel
Publisher: Stray Dog Press

Out for a day's adventure exploring the dry bed of Lake Travis in Austin, Texas, two young boys stumble upon a skeleton. It might be all that remains of a fugitive named Randy Bear Heart. Wanted for robbing three banks and killing three cops, Bear Heart was never brought to justice.

The FBI is called on to determine how the outlaw avoided arrest for twenty-five years and who put him in the lake wearing chains. The BIA — Bureau of Indian Affairs — gets the very same job. Special Agent John Tall Wolf is put on the case because one of the dead cops was a Native American who worked at the Mercy Ridge Reservation.

The FBI wants John to "coordinate all your efforts" through SAC Gilbert Melvin. John is having none of that, saying, "I'll conduct my investigation as I see fit." He doesn't even get along with his own boss, Marlene Flower Moon, head of the BIA's Office of Justice Services.

While interviewing John for his job, Marlene was amused by his assertiveness, and asked him, "What do you want, a license to take scalps?" John said, "Yeah, that'd be good."

11/22/63 by Stephen King

11/22/63
Stephen King
A Novel of Suspense
Scribner

On November 22, 1963, three shots rang out in Dallas, President Kennedy died, and the world changed. What if you could change it back?

Jake Epping is a thirty-five-year-old high school English teacher in Lisbon Falls, Maine, who makes extra money teaching adults in the GED program. He receives an essay from one of the students — a gruesome, harrowing first person story about the night 50 years ago when Harry Dunning's father came home and killed his mother, his sister, and his brother with a hammer. Harry escaped with a smashed leg, as evidenced by his crooked walk.

Not much later, Jake's friend Al, who runs the local diner, divulges a secret: his storeroom is a portal to 1958. He enlists Jake on an insane — and insanely possible — mission to try to prevent the Kennedy assassination. So begins Jake's new life as George Amberson and his new world of Elvis and JFK, of big American cars and sock hops, of a troubled loner named Lee Harvey Oswald and a beautiful high school librarian named Sadie Dunhill, who becomes the love of Jake's life — a life that transgresses all the normal rules of time.

Takedown Twenty by Janet Evanovich

[7]: Takedown Twenty
Janet Evanovich
— Stephanie Plum (20th)

New Jersey bounty hunter Stephanie Plum knows better than to mess with family. But when powerful mobster Salvatore “Uncle Sunny” Sunucchi goes on the lam in Trenton, it's up to Stephanie to find him. Uncle Sunny is charged with murder for running over a guy (twice), and nobody wants to turn him in — not his poker buddies, not his bimbo girlfriend, not his two right-hand men, Shorty and Moe. Even Trenton's hottest cop, Joe Morelli, has skin in the game, because — just Stephanie's luck — the godfather is his actual godfather. And while Morelli understands that the law is the law, his old-world grandmother, Bella, is doing everything she can to throw Stephanie off the trail.

It's not just Uncle Sunny giving Stephanie the run-around. Security specialist Ranger needs her help to solve the bizarre death of a top client's mother, a woman who happened to play bingo with Stephanie's Grandma Mazur. Before Stephanie knows it, she's working side by side with Ranger and Grandma at the senior center, trying to catch a killer on the loose — and the bingo balls are not rolling in their favor.

With bullet holes in her car, henchmen on her tail, and a giraffe named Kevin running wild in the streets of Trenton, Stephanie will have to up her game for the ultimate takedown.

Review: Tooth for a Tooth by T. Frank Muir

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of Tooth for a Tooth by T. Frank Muir. An Andy Gilchrist Mystery.

Review summary: This is far more than just a police procedural-style crime novel. It is also a very poignant story of family and friends, confidence and envy, love and hate. The murder mystery storyline is a compelling one, but it is really the central character of Andy Gilchrist that makes such a difference here. Highly recommended. (Click here for text of full review.)

Our rating: 4 of 5 stars

Nowhere Nice by Rick Gavin

Rick Gavin

In pure spiteful nastiness, Boudrot is three cuts above your regular dime-a-dozen lowlife, and it's a sure bet he's out for revenge on everyone involved in last year's incident. Nick and Desmond immediately set out to warn the innocent — relatively speaking, anyway — of trouble to come, and proceed to round up the troops for a showdown.
