A Chad Hunter, Hypershot Thriller
Publisher: Salvo Press
Publication Date: November 14, 2013
Price: $2.99 (as of 11/15/13 12:30 PM ET)

When a series of events bring Chad Hunter and hot Agency super spy Sirena back together again, the action gets ramped up immediately. Chad has been hired by the Defense Department to develop a new weapon system based on the Hypershot rail gun system, with a scheduled test looming from a remote site on a volcano in Ecuador.

While attending a United Nations World Conference on International Telecommunications in Brazil, Chad runs into Sirena. After a terrorist group bombs the hotel, killing a number of diplomats, and almost killing Chad and Sirena, the two of them join forces to discover who was behind the bombing. Did the bombing have anything to do with Chad’s weapons test?

Eventually, Sirena must choose between her allegiance with the Agency and her friendship with Chad, while both run for their lives from the remote Ecuadorian forest to the steamy shores of Columbia, fighting a brutal force of hired killers, government agents and a cabal of bureaucratic numbskulls determined to bring them both down.

Please Welcome Mystery Author Lia Farrell

Omnimystery News: Guest Post by Lia Farrell
with Lia Farrell

We are delighted to welcome mystery author Lia Farrell to Omnimystery News today. That should be mystery authors as Lia Farrell is a pen name used by the mother and daughter writing team of Lyn Farquhar and Lisa Fitzsimmons.

Lia's debut mystery is One Dog Too Many (Camel Press; November 2013 trade paperback), which introduces dog boarding business owner Mae December.

We asked Lia to tell us the backstory to the series.

One Dog Too Many is the first mystery in a 3 book series by Lia Farrell featuring Maeve December who runs a dog boarding business in Tennessee. Mae's controversial neighbor Ruby Mead Allison has been feuding with the Road Commissioner. She's opposed to widening Little Chapel Road. While out exercising the dogs she is boarding, Mae comes upon Ruby's dead body. A traffic counting cord lies across her neck.

The idea for this story arose when Lyn (the mom of this mother/daughter writing team) was visiting Lisa in Tennessee. We went out to brunch one Sunday morning and were reading an article in the newspaper about a road widening project in the county. The story detailed a neighbor's frivolous lawsuit intended to derail the widening of the street.

We both read a lot of mysteries and said, "If that were a murder mystery, somebody would knock that lady off." And Lisa responded, "It would make a great novel, wouldn't it?" So we decided to write it. We had a brain-storming session during which we named all the characters and made a plan for the first draft.

Since Lyn lives in Michigan and Lisa lives in Tennessee we decided to send chapters back and forth via e-mail.

It sounded so simple. We wrote the first draft in about nine months and began the agent querying process. Boy we have learned a lot since then!

We were lucky to get Dawn Dowdle from Blue Ridge Literary an agent who was willing to take a chance on our story. I blush when I think of what we sent her as our "finished product." Poor Dawn, she even had to teach us about pov! She wanted us to tell the story completely from Mae's point of view. We didn't feel we could do that because we thought readers would expect to hear about fingerprint evidence, autopsies, etc. Plus we wanted the story to have a love interest.

We decided that four people would tell the story; Ben Bradley, the sheriff, Wayne Nichols, the detective, Mae and her best friend Tammy Rogers. It seemed best for Lisa to write the Mae and Tammy material and for Lyn to write the Ben and Wayne chapters. Dawn gave in reluctantly, but told us we couldn't have more than one pov per chapter. It was a genius suggestion. Months of writing and re-writing later, Dawn agreed that the ms. was ready to send out.

After multiple rejections, we got a rejection from Camel Press, but they were kind enough to make several trenchant suggestions. We re-wrote, Dawn re-submitted and we got Jennifer and Catherine who have been fabulous collaborators. In addition, they gave us a 3 Book Deal! And an adorable cover! Yes, I know, you aren't supposed to use exclamation points! But we are seriously over the moon. The book comes out November, 2013.

We are already hard at work on Two Dogs Lie Sleeping. The plot for this one is much more complex. It features our same cast of characters. July December, Mae's older sister, finds her old high school boyfriend Tommy Ferris dying in his parent's former home. He's been shot in the back. Tommy was last seen in Rosedale on Christmas break during his sophomore year at college. Upon returning to East Tennessee State, he found his roommate had committed suicide. Tommy disappeared the following day. So, it's a new case on top of an old case; thus two dogs lie sleeping.

We can't believe our luck and hope you will enjoy our story-telling.

A Mae December Mystery

Mae December runs a successful dog boarding business in Tennessee. When her neighbor, Ruby Mead-Allison, fails to pick up her unruly Pomeranian from Mae's kennel, Mae pokes around and discovers the woman's body. It is clad in one red boot, and there is a vehicle counting cord wrapped around its neck.

While delving into the mystery of Ruby's death, Mae encounters handsome Sheriff Ben Bradley. Together they find no shortage of suspects. Ruby was standing in the way of a project that would widen the road and make the area safer. Was she killed by an angry neighbor? Her estranged husband? Her disinherited brother? The sheriff may not appreciate Mae's amateur detecting, but he does respond to her as a woman. Meanwhile the murderer thinks it's time to put a permanent stop to Mae's meddling.

Dust by Patricia Cornwell

Patricia Cornwell
— Kay Scarpetta (21st)

Massachusetts Chief Medical Examiner Kay Scarpetta has just returned from working one of the worst mass murders in U.S. history when she's awakened at an early hour by Detective Pete Marino.

A body, oddly draped in an unusual cloth, has just been discovered inside the sheltered gates of MIT and it's suspected the identity is that of missing computer engineer Gail Shipton, last seen the night before at a trendy Cambridge bar. It appears she's been murdered, mere weeks before the trial of her $100 million lawsuit against her former financial managers, and Scarpetta doubts it's a coincidence. She also fears the case may have a connection with her computer genius niece, Lucy.

At a glance there is no sign of what killed Gail Shipton, but she's covered with a fine dust that under ultraviolet light fluoresces brilliantly in three vivid colors, what Scarpetta calls a mineral fingerprint. Clearly the body has been posed with chilling premeditation that is symbolic and meant to shock, and Scarpetta has reason to worry that the person responsible is the Capital Murderer, whose most recent sexual homicides have terrorized Washington, D.C. Stunningly, Scarpetta will discover that her FBI profiler husband, Benton Wesley, is convinced that certain people in the government, including his boss, don't want the killer caught.

White Fire by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child

[10]: White Fire
Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child
— Pendergast (13th)

Special Agent Pendergast arrives at an exclusive Colorado ski resort to rescue his protégée, Corrie Swanson, from serious trouble with the law. His sudden appearance coincides with the first attack of a murderous arsonist who — with brutal precision--begins burning down multimillion-dollar mansions with the families locked inside. After springing Corrie from jail, Pendergast learns she made a discovery while examining the bones of several miners who were killed 150 years earlier by a rogue grizzly bear. Her finding is so astonishing that it, even more than the arsonist, threatens the resort's very existence.

Drawn deeper into the investigation, Pendergast uncovers a mysterious connection between the dead miners and a fabled, long-lost Sherlock Holmes story — one that might just offer the key to the modern day killings as well.

Now, with the ski resort snowed in and under savage attack — and Corrie's life suddenly in grave danger — Pendergast must solve the enigma of the past before the town of the present goes up in flames.

Tatiana by Martin Cruz Smith

[15]: Tatiana

— Arkady Renko (8th)

The fearless reporter Tatiana Petrovna falls to her death from a sixth-floor window in Moscow the same week that a mob billionaire, Grisha Grigo-renko, is shot and buried with the trappings due a lord. No one else makes the connection, but Arkady is transfixed by the tapes he discovers of Tatiana's voice describing horrific crimes in words that are at odds with the Kremlin's official versions.

The trail leads to Kaliningrad, a Cold War "secret city" that is separated by hundreds of miles from the rest of Russia. The more Arkady delves into Tatiana's past, the more she leads him into a surreal world of wandering sand dunes, abandoned children, and a notebook written in the personal code of a dead translator. Finally, in a lethal race to uncover what the translator knew, Arkady makes a startling discovery that draws him still deeper into Tatiana's past — and, paradoxically, into Russia's future, where bulletproof cars, poets, corruption of the Baltic Fleet, and a butcher for hire combine to give Kaliningrad the “distinction” of having the highest crime rate in Russia.
