Death is a Cabernet by Ken Dalton

Death is a Cabernet by Ken Dalton
A Pinky and Bear Mystery
Publisher: Different Drummer Press

An old school mate sends J. Pinkus (Pinky) Delmont a picture of a purple corpse and begs for his help to find the real murderer. The corpse? Paul Hellman, the world famous winemaker, who was murdered when he was stuffed, head first, into in stainless steel tank filled with cabernet sauvignon.

While Pinky ponders if he wants to help his college chum, Bear and Flo discover that Pinky had them steal a computer printout from an organized crime boss in Las Vegas. Concerned there could be a price on his head, Pinky flees to the California wine country to help his friend and to hide from the Vegas hit man.

Pinky, Bear, Flo, and a new sidekick have to deal with death threats — a dubious Public Defender — a ferret-faced innkeeper — a pair of knockout twins — a dominatrix — a blind grandpa — and many other memorable characters as the dynamic quartet work their way through floods, ground fog, phylloxera, gun shots, central valley plonk, and come very close to losing their lives to uncover the real killer of Paul Hellman.

An Alexis Parker Mystery
Publisher: Modus Operandi

A year ago, Alexis Parker turned her back on everything she knew. Walking away from the Office of International Operations proved to be both the easiest and hardest thing she had ever done. However, her newfound life in the private sector is turning out to be anything but the cushy desk job she imagined.

Now ghosts from her past have come to haunt her. Running into a former acquaintance while retrieving a painting in Paris sends Alex spiraling back to the life she hoped to leave behind. Buried traumas from her last mission at the OIO are unearthed when similarities force the present to collide with the past. Those she believed to be friends quickly become enemies, and enemies soon become allies. It's a minefield of uncertainty that can have deadly consequences if she places her trust in the wrong person.

Meanwhile, the dynamic is shifting between her and James Martin, the man she had once been hired to protect. The two are standing on an emotional precipice, teetering on the edge of will they or won't they. It will all reach a crescendo as blood is spilled and sacrifices are made. Survival isn't always a guarantee, but merely a whimsical dalliance.

Six months have passed since a faded, black ledger mysteriously appeared on FBI Agent Jake Radley's doorstep. Puzzling over the document's sinister entries, Jake pieces together a story of mass murder near the Texas-Mexico border two decades before. If Jake's theory is correct, the names listed on the ledger's final page are the victims of a previously unknown serial killer.

Leads are scarce until a gruesome new crime scene, deep in the Mexican desert, shows a chilling connection to the border deaths of long ago.

A Shawn Danger Mystery
Publisher: Curosity Quills Press

Shawn Danger is the hardest-working homicide detective in Jamesville County. His job means everything to him, and when he's working a case, he barely has time to feed his cat — let alone mess with frivolous things like his family or a love life.

After a reclusive heiress is murdered, Shawn begins an intense pursuit of the killer. As he combs through the crime scene and interviews the suspects, he discovers a mysterious object that lets him see into another eerily-similar universe. A terrible crime was committed in that world as well, and Shawn can't help but wonder if the two are somehow connected.

Meanwhile, he must deal with an equally peculiar problem: dozens of cats are appearing in his house out of thin air. Plus, earthquakes are shaking the town, and he's not the only one who senses that something ominous is coming. Can Shawn embrace the unknown and find the answers he needs to solve the case, and can he act quickly enough to restore balance between the two worlds?

Publisher synopsis: Traveling secretary Hattie Davish and her trusty typewriter alight on a small town in Illinois, where the Civil War may long be over, but certain mysteries refuse to be buried …

Hattie Davish is delighted to be ably assisting her wealthy employer, Sir Arthur Windom-Greene, an English scholar who is fluent in Civil War history and hard at work putting together a definitive biography of General Cornelius Starrett. Their research takes them to Galena, Illinois, where they quickly learn that time has done little to heal old battle wounds. Distrust and betrayal seem to linger in everyone's minds, none more so than the General's pompous son Henry. And Hattie is certain he has something to do with a string of bizarre incidents in town — especially when he turns up dead …

Between her work for Sir Arthur, preparing for Christmas, and unscheduled visitors from her past, Hattie hardly has time to investigate a murder, but soon she is lost in a labyrinth of secrets and deceit that leads to more questions than answers. Henry had a knack for finding trouble and making enemies, and there's no shortage of suspects — including Sir Arthur.
