A Clancy Parker Mystery
Publisher: P. J. Morse Books

Clancy Parker thought she'd been hired to protect the show's star, grunge-rock guitar god Patrick Price, from a stalker, but she quickly realizes she's dealing with a clever murderer whose arsenal includes booby-trapped stripper poles and sabotaged stretch Hummers. As members of the cast and production team are killed one by one, Clancy finds herself with few allies. She's at the mercy of a nosy camera crew and, even worse, reality show contestants who will do anything for fame.

However, Clancy is the right woman for this challenge. She plays guitar for a band, and she fancies herself a rock ‘n' roll detective, like Kinky Friedman, only a whole lot prettier. With her music background, Patrick Price can't resist her, but the attentions of a horny rock star threaten to distract her from her original purpose, which is to save her client's life.

Review: Bad Blood by Arne Dahl

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of Bad Blood by Arne Dahl. An "A-Unit" Mystery.

Review summary: This police procedural takes an incredibly long time to get started. But the storyline is a strong one and it is unlikely that any reader will "figure it out" much before the end. If readers can hang on through what is a seriously tedious beginning, they will be rewarded with what is, on balance, a really solid entry in this series. (Click here for text of full review.)

Our rating: 4 of 5 stars

Bad Blood Arne Dahl

Bad Blood
Arne Dahl
An "A-Unit" Mystery
Pantheon (August 2013)

Publisher synopsis: When a Swedish literary critic is found tortured to death in a janitor's closet at Newark International Airport, the police realize that the murderer made off with the victim's ticket and boarded a flight to Stockholm. Swedish authorities are placed on high alert, but the killer manages to slip through the customs dragnet and vanishes into the night.

With no clear motive in sight, Detectives Paul Hjelm and Kerstin Holm of Intercrime's A-Unit take over the investigation. They learn that the method of torture used was not only a highly specialized means of extracting information secretly developed during the Vietnam War — allowing the victim to whisper, but not to scream — but also that it was the modus operandi of an allegedly deceased homicidal maniac known only as the Kentucky Killer.

As additional victims are discovered on the outskirts of Stockholm and the terror grows, the team finds itself coming up empty-handed. Hjelm and Holm fly to New York, hoping to discover both the killer's identity and the source of his interest in Sweden. What they quickly learn, searching through the past, is that bad blood always comes back around.

Warner Bros. Options Jo Nesbø's Blood on the Snow for Film

Book News: Mysteries, Suspense and Crime Novels, Thrillers

We recently reported on Norwegian crime novelist Jo Nesbø assuming the pen name Tom Johansen for his next book, to be published in Fall 2014.

We're now learning (via Deadline) that Blood on the Snow has been preemptively optioned for film by Warner Bros. The storyline is centered on a man hired by his boss to kill his wife only to fall for her instead. (We're hoping there's more to it than that!)

A second book under contract (working title More Blood on the Snow), to be published in 2015, is apparently not part of this deal.

Which of the party guests wanted to keep her quiet is a question for Ariadne's friend Hercule Poirot. But unmasking a killer this Hallowe'en is not going to be easy — for there isn't a soul in Woodleigh who believes the late little storyteller was actually murdered.

Duck the Halls by Donna Andrews

Duck the Halls
Donna Andrews
Series: Meg Langslow (16th)

A few nights before Christmas, Meg is awakened when volunteer fireman Michael is summoned to the New Life Baptist Church, where someone has rigged a cage full of skunks in the choir loft. The lengthy process of de-skunking the church requires its annual pre-Christmas concert to relocate to Trinity Episcopal, where Mother insists the show must go on, despite the budget-related protests of Mr. Vess, an elderly vestryman. Meanwhile, when Meg helps her grandfather take the skunks to the zoo, they discover that his boa has been stolen — only to turn up later during the concert, slithering out from the ribbon-bedecked evergreens. The next morning is Sunday, and the congregation of St. Byblig's, the local Catholic church, arrive to find it completely filled with several hundred ducks.

It's clear that some serious holiday pranksters are on the loose, and Meg is determined to find them. But before she can, a fire breaks out at Trinity, and Mr. Vess is discovered dead. Who would have murdered such a harmless — if slightly cranky — old man? Who has the time during the busy holiday season to herd all of these animals into the town's churches? And will Meg ever be able to finish all of her shopping, wrapping, cooking, caroling, and decorating in time for Christmas Eve?
