A Samantha Sweet Mystery
Publisher: Secret Staircase Books

Samantha Sweet breaks into houses for a living — all perfectly legal as a caretaker for the USDA. But her real dream is to open her own pastry shop, Sweet's Sweets.

Life is a little crazy for Sam right now. At one of her break-in properties a dying woman insists that she take a small wooden box. Sam doesn't realize that the old woman was known locally as a bruja, a witch, until she begins to feel some strange effects from the box, herself.

Meanwhile, at another property, she finds an unmarked grave and the authorities come to investigate. The property owner disappeared a few months earlier and Sam wonders — who is the body in the grave? A small mural in the house leads to a connection with a famous artist; a bogus will points to possible fraud; and the handsome deputy investigating the case seems completely enchanted with Sam.

While Sam scrambles to fill bakery orders and keep her properties in order, she's equally intrigued with the idea of a new romance. It all makes for a delightful romantic mystery with elements of the paranormal.

A Hazel Micallef Mystery (1st in series)
Publisher: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt

Detective Inspector Hazel Micallef has lived all her days in the small town of Port Dundas, Ontario and is now making her way toward retirement with something less than grace. Hobbled by a bad back and a dependence on painkillers, and feeling blindsided by divorce after nearly four decades of marriage, sixty-one-year-old Hazel has only the constructive criticism of her mother (the former mayor) and her own sharp tongue to buoy her. But when a terminally ill woman is gruesomely murdered in her own home, Hazel and her understaffed department must spring to life. And as one terminally ill victim after another is found, Hazel finds herself tracking a truly terrifying serial killer while everything around her spins out of control.

Through the cacophony of her bickering staff, her unsupportive superiors, a clamoring press, the town's rumor mill, and her own nagging doubts, Hazel can sense the dead trying to call out. Will she hear them before it's too late?

Telemystery: Relativity To Develop Television Drama Based on its Film Limitless

Telemystery: Mystery and Suspense on Television

Relativity Media is developing a television drama based on its 2011 film Limitless. Bradley Cooper, who starred in the film, will co-executive produce.

"Limitless is the perfect example of Relativity's multiplatform approach to creating quality content," said Ryan Kavanaugh, CEO of Relativity.

In the film — you can read our review, here — Cooper plays a struggling writer, who goes from a nobody to a somebody after consuming a drug that allows him to access every part of his brain. It doesn't necessarily make him smarter, but he can instantaneously take advantage of everything he has seen, heard, or learned.

"The film has an organic natural extension into a compelling and sophisticated one-hour drama that is both a thrill-ride and a social commentary," added Marc Rosen of Georgeville Television, which is co-producing the project.

Death Benefits by Monette Michaels
A Novel of Suspense
Publisher: Monette Michaels
Publication Date: October 06, 2013

Everybody dies sooner or later. It's the people dying sooner that cause attorney Mici Smith and Dr. Rob Craig to work together to seek answers.

Mici's response to Elinor Grace's death and the Grace family's suspicions she was murdered is, as always, thorough. What she doesn't realize is obtaining the exhumation order for Elinor's body will be opening the proverbial Pandora's box. Like Pandora, her life will never be the same again.

At the behest of the Grace family, Mici hires Rob to perform the autopsy. Rob finds that Elinor has been poisoned. His gut tells him it is neither suicide nor an accident.

After the police refuse to look into Elinor Grace's suspicious death, Rob and Mici start down the twisted path to discover who would want to kill the elderly woman. Did the person who killed Elinor Grace also kill the Medical Director of the viatical insurance company which had bought her life insurance policy? Was Elinor killed as part of a scheme to make money for an unscrupulous CEO? Or, was she killed for something she knew? Who is Master X and why does he want to kill Mici and Rob?

The answers to these questions lead the couple to a scene right out of Edgar Allen Poe, complete with a dark and stormy night, baying hounds and a crypt.

But then, things go terribly, tragically wrong; the kidnappers escape; and a shattered Pendergast retreats to his New York apartment and shuts out the world.

When the kidnappers strike again at those closest to Pendergast, the FBI agent, filled anew with vengeful fury, sets out to track down and destroy those responsible. His journey takes him deep into the trackless forests of South America, where he ultimately finds himself face to face with an old evil that-rather than having been eradicated-is stirring anew … and with potentially world-altering consequences.

The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley
A Flavia de Luce Mystery (1st in series)
Publisher: Delacorte Press

Read our review of The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley

It is the summer of 1950 — and a series of inexplicable events has struck Buckshaw, the decaying English mansion that Flavia's family calls home. A dead bird is found on the doorstep, a postage stamp bizarrely pinned to its beak. Hours later, Flavia finds a man lying in the cucumber patch and watches him as he takes his dying breath. For Flavia, who is both appalled and delighted, life begins in earnest when murder comes to Buckshaw. "I wish I could say I was afraid, but I wasn't. Quite the contrary. This was by far the most interesting thing that had ever happened to me in my entire life."

To Flavia the investigation is the stuff of science: full of possibilities, contradictions, and connections. Soon her father, a man raising his three daughters alone, is seized, accused of murder. And in a police cell, during a violent thunderstorm, Colonel de Luce tells his daughter an astounding story — of a schoolboy friendship turned ugly, of a priceless object that vanished in a bizarre and brazen act of thievery, of a Latin teacher who flung himself to his death from the school's tower thirty years before. Now Flavia is armed with more than enough knowledge to tie two distant deaths together, to examine new suspects, and begin a search that will lead her all the way to the King of England himself. Of this much the girl is sure: her father is innocent of murder — but protecting her and her sisters from something even worse …
