A Silver Sleuths Mystery
Publisher: Thomas & Mercer

When a sudden rash of stolen cars brings Millie Morrow's daughter under suspicion for conspiracy to commit insurance fraud, Millie convinces her two best friends, Trish Anderson and Edna Radcliff, to help her find out who is trying to frame Michelle. Knowing the odds are zero that they will be able to discover who the thugs are, Trish and Edna nevertheless go through the motion of investigating, hoping Millie will feel productive in helping her daughter while the police do the real detective work.

But the situation becomes much more serious when a body is found in front of the insurance office Michelle works for. And even though the evidence pointing to an inside job is purely circumstantial, it could still destroy Michelle, something the ladies are determined is not going to happen. They're going to have to work fast to present a different theory for the police to consider though, since Millie has once again alienated Henry Espinoza, the chief of police. And she's alienated someone else, too, if the suspicious incidents suddenly plaguing her are anything to go by.

Keeping Millie out of trouble while attempting to clear her daughter's name will take every ounce of skill … or luck … the amateur sleuths possess.

It was a hell of a longshot …

CIA assassin Fortune Redding is about to undertake her most difficult mission ever — in Sinful, Louisiana.

With a leak at the CIA and a price on her head by one of the world's largest arms dealers, Fortune has to go off grid, but she never expected to be this far out of her element. Posing as a former beauty queen turned librarian in a small, bayou town seems worse than death to Fortune, but she's determined to fly below the radar until her boss finds the leak and puts the arms dealer out of play.

Unfortunately, she hasn't even unpacked a suitcase before her newly-inherited dog digs up a human bone in her backyard. Thrust into the middle of a bayou murder mystery, Fortune teams up with a couple of seemingly-sweet old ladies whose looks completely belie their hold on the town. To top things off, the handsome local deputy is asking her too many questions. If she's not careful, this investigation may blow her cover and get her killed.

Armed with her considerable skills and a group of old ladies referred to by locals as The Geritol Mafia, Fortune has no choice but to solve the murder … before it's too late.

Jefferson Tayte uncovers the disturbing consequences of a seemingly innocuous act in 1944 that was intended to keep a family together, but which ultimately tore it apart. His research exposes hidden pasts and the desperate measures some people will take to keep a secret.

Sitting in a hotel room at gunpoint, facing an impossible decision, Tayte is forced to wonder how his latest assignment had come to this. Five days earlier, after a child's suitcase arrives unexpectedly at his client's home in Washington DC, Tayte embarks upon a journey that takes him back to England as he tries to unravel the story of Mena Lasseter - a girl whose life has become a family mystery.

Hoping to reunite his client with the birth mother she never knew she had, having no idea that she'd been adopted, Tayte's research draws him back to wartime Leicestershire and the arrival of the US 82nd Airborne, which irrevocably changes the course of Mena's life. But as Tayte tries to find out what became of her and why she was separated from her suitcase all those years ago, he soon finds that he is not the only one looking for her. Someone else is determined to get to Mena first and it quickly becomes apparent that their motive is a secret worth killing for.

Telemystery: Foyle's War Season 7 Concludes on Sunday

Telemystery: Mystery and Suspense on Television

The seventh season of Foyle's War comes to a close on Sunday, September 29th, on PBS's Masterpiece Mystery!

In an episode titled "Sunflower", Foyle is given the distasteful task of protecting art historian Professor Peter Van Haren, an undercover ex-Nazi and a valuable MI5 intelligence asset against the Russians. But when Van Haren lectures a group of students on the self-portraits of the artist Rembrandt, his presence causes a young man to suffer a frightening flashback which ends in tragedy.

Of the three episodes in this season, this one is the least satisfying (in our opinion) though still pretty good. (We received a DVD set of the season from Acorn Media for review and thus have already seen this episode. Look for our review of the set next week.) For starters, it's never made quite clear to Foyle (and hence to us) why Peter Van Haren is so important to MI5; "the greater good" is about all he gets by way of explanation. Then there are the two storylines that never come together — as most of them do, and usually in a most unexpected manner, in the best episodes of this series. Finally, and while this comment isn't directly related to what airs, this should have been the episode that explains what went on while Foyle was in America. Maybe we'll never learn, but having to wait at least a year to find out is far too long.

Love Bites by Adrienne Barbeau
A Vampyres of Hollywood Mystery (2nd in series)
Publisher: booksBnimble

Ovsanna Moore is the successful owner of her own Hollywood film studio and the star of 17 blockbuster horror films, plus three, sadly, that went straight to video. But even vampires have bad days. Though never fat days or bad hair days — she looks pretty great for 450. And in those four and a half centuries she's pretty much seen everything, formed an opinion about it, and developed the kind of worldly-wise wit Joan Rivers only dreams about.

Peter King, on the other hand, is a Beverly Hills cop firmly rooted in human affairs, from the domestic issues of his lively Italian family to the romantic ones of his neighbor, snake dancer Suzie Q. Though Ovsanna's had flings with everyone from Genghis Khan to Errol Flynn, Peter's got what it takes to catch her eye and hold her interest. And he's one hell of a detective. He's also a consummate master of spin, concealing what he knows about the world of vampires, werewolves, and shapeshifters while solving the crimes they commit.

King's Mountain by Sharyn McCrumb

King's Mountain
Sharyn McCrumb
Series: The Ballad Series

John Sevier had not taken much interest in the American Revolution. Homesteading in the Carolina mountains, Sevier was too busy fighting Indians and taming the wilderness to worry much about a far-off war, but when an arrogant British officer sends a message over the mountains, threatening to burn the settlers' farms and kill their families, the war becomes personal.

That abrasive officer is British Army Major Patrick Ferguson, who is both charmingly antagonistic and surprisingly endearing. The younger son of a Scottish earl, Ferguson suffers constant misfortunes, making his dedication and courage count for nothing. When he loses the use of his arm from an injury at Brandywine, his commander sends him south, away from the war — which, in 1780, George Washington and the Continental Army are losing. Ordered to recruit wealthy Southern planters to the British cause, Ferguson courts disaster by provoking the frontiersmen, and suddenly the far-off war is a sword's length away. The British aristocrat on a fine white horse is the antihero to Sevier's American pioneer spirit. Two Tory washerwomen, Virginia Sal — whose lucid voice lends humor and mysticism to the pages — and Virginia Paul, a mysterious woman too well-acquainted with death, portray the human side of the king's army. With a regiment of British regulars and local Tory volunteers, Ferguson believes he's an indomitable force.

Threatened by the Loyalists with invasion and the loss of their land, Sevier knows that Ferguson has to be stopped. In response, Sevier and his loyal comrades — many of whom would play key roles in later parts of American history — raise an unpaid volunteer militia of more than a thousand men. Bringing their own guns, riding their own horses, and wearing just their civilian clothes, the Overmountain Men ally themselves with other states' militias and march toward Charlotte in search of Ferguson's marauding army.

On a hill straddling the North and South Carolina lines, in what Thomas Jefferson later called "the turning point of the American Revolution", the Overmountain Men triumph, proving that the British forces can be stopped. Their victory at King's Mountain inspired the colonies to fight on, ending the war one year later at Yorktown.

Telemystery: Martin Freeman Joins Cast of Fargo

Telemystery: Mystery and Suspense on Television

Martin Freeman (Sherlock) will star in FX Network's limited series Fargo.

Inspired by the 1996 feature film of the same title, Fargo will follow a different crime storyline and feature different characters, but will retain the wry humor of the original.

Freeman will play Lester Nygaard, a character similar to one played by William H. Macy. An insurance salesman who has seen better days, his life is changed when a stranger (Billy Bob Thornton playing Lorne Malvo) comes to town.

Production is set to begin next month in Calgary. The 10-episode series is expected to premiere in Spring 2014.
