The Lotus Cross by Ray Anderson

The Lotus Cross
Ray Anderson
A Novel of Suspense
Publisher: Dark Planet Publishing

The Lotus Cross has its origins in Christ's resurrection. As Christ rose from the dead in 33 AD, the apostles and Jesus' followers rejoiced. Yet as history records, Thomas the Apostle did not witness the event and questioned the resurrection of his teacher. To placate his doubt, eight days after the resurrection, Doubting Thomas, as he would later become known, came into the presence of the risen Christ. He touched the hands that had been nailed to the cross, and thrust his fingers into the wound made by the sword of a Roman soldier.

His doubt replaced by faith, Thomas spread the early Christian faith into the East, establishing his church in India in 54 AD. He had a bronze vessel forged to contain the preserved blood of Christ. He called it the Lotus Cross, because the cross holding the pouch with traces of the blood was fashioned upon a base shaped as a lotus flower. In the seventh century the Lotus Cross was moved to China and Christianity flourished. In the ninth century the Lotus Cross was hidden to protect it from those seeking to destroy it. It would remain lost until a recent discovery.

In an age of advanced scientific techniques and recombinant DNA analysis, the blood-flecked pouch hidden within the Lotus Cross could yield the key to the second coming of Christ. Professor Michael Drake sets off to find the ancient artifact. With the help of other archaeologists, the British Secret Service and members of a secret Christian group, he uncovers the secret within the Lotus Cross, but not without great risk.

The Wrong Girl
Hank Phillippi Ryan
Series: Jane Ryland (2nd)

Does a respected adoption agency have a frightening secret? Tipped off by a determined ex-colleague on a desperate quest to find her birth mother, Boston newspaper reporter Jane Ryland begins to suspect that the agency is engaging in the ultimate betrayal — reuniting birth parents with the wrong children.

For detective Jake Brogan and his partner, a young woman's brutal murder seems a sadly predictable case of domestic violence, one that results in two toddlers being shuttled into the foster care system. Then Jake finds an empty cradle at the murder scene. Where is the baby who should have been sleeping there?

Jane and Jake are soon on a trail full of twists and turns that takes them deep into the heart of a foster care system in crisis and threatens to blow the lid off an adoption agency scandal. When the threatening phone calls start, Jane knows she is on the right track … but with both a killer at large and an infant missing, time is running out …

A Trout Brooke Mystery

While helping twelve-year-old Tommy Sharpe recover from the violence she experienced in Puzzle Creek, Trout Brooke, a dog-loving, book-devouring painter of environmental disasters, shares the story of her own past assault — also a revelation to Brooke's mother Mary Beth, with whom she was reunited in Satori Ranch.

As Brooke's tale unfolds, we learn of the events that transformed this environmentalist into a seemingly fearless defender of women's rights: In 2008, after a violent assault in her home in Silverplate, Montana, Brooke manages to make a strong recovery and take back the power from her attacker. Because of her brilliant visual memory, rapist Wayne Ripplinger is brought to justice. Mysteriously, Ripplinger escapes, starting a chain of events in which Brooke ferrets out the solutions to two brutal murders — one current, another from the past.

Murder on Moloka'i
Chip Hughes
A Kai Cooke, Surfing Detective Mystery
Publisher: Island Heritage

When Boston heiress Adrienne Ridgely strides into his Honolulu office, Surfing Detective Kai Cooke likes what he sees, but doubts what he hears. Adrienne's sister, environmental activist Sara Ridgely-Parke, plunged to her death from a mule on Moloka'i — the first fatal incident on the soaring cliffs above Kalaupapa's fabled leper colony. Murder, cries Adrienne, perpetrated by Sara's ex-husband, developer J. Gregory Parke. Cooke flies to Moloka'i, tracking tantalizing leads to an unlikely murder that, despite himself, he starts to believe in.

Was the mule prodded or spooked or drugged? Did Parke do it for vengeance, or Adrienne for an inheritance, as Parke alleges? Soon Kai uncovers a motive more noxious than either of these — entangling him in the shady dealings of big-time developers, corrupt politicians, and underworld thugs. As he hops from island to island seeking a pivotal clue, the clock ticks down on more than the P.I.'s case or even his own life. The future of Moloka'i itself is at stake.

Julie Smith
A Rebecca Schwartz Mystery
Publisher: booksBnimble

Rebecca's shocked when Chris Nicholson, her glamorous law partner, is arrested for murder — but not nearly so shocked as when she discovers Chris can't come up with an alibi. What she was doing, Chris says, involves a secret so damaging she'd be drummed out of San Francisco legal circles if anyone knew. All she'll say is what her secret isn't — crime, drugs, sex, alcohol, addiction, illness (mental or otherwise), or an eating disorder. So what's left? Sure enough, when Rebecca uncovers it, her world tilts on its axis — and continues to list, ever more dangerously, as the story picks up speed and this formerly rational lawyer finds her worldview threatened by things she never knew existed. At least not in her circle! And Chris is far from the only one with a skeleton in her closet.

The murdered man, Jason McKendrick, was a much-loved columnist, a carefree bachelor with a million glamorous women, who also happened to have a very special friend who slept on a filthy mattress in his apartment. As Rebecca and Chris peel back the layers of Jason's complicated world, they find he was leading not just a double life, but maybe many more. Only one person knows what made him tick. But can she stay alive long enough to tell his story?
