A Mysterious Review of The Devil's Cave by Martin Walker. A Bruno, Chief of Police Mystery.

Review summary: This mystery is typical of the series (to date) in that it combines far too many subplots into the story, most of which are eventually linked but it requires a significant effort on the part of the reader to keep it all straight. A visit to St. Denis shouldn't be this exhausting. The French countryside, however, is beautifully drawn and captivating in its own way. (Click here for text of full review.)

Foyle's War Series 7 returns this Sunday, September 15th, 2013 to PBS's Masterpiece Mystery!

It's 1946, and in the brewing Cold War climate of post-war Britain, Detective Chief Superintendent Christopher Foyle (Michael Kitchen) and his loyal friend Sam (Honeysuckle Weeks) find themselves adjusting to a new era of secrets, intelligence, and security as the Iron Curtain descends and MI5 comes knocking.

In this first episode of three, titled "The Eternity Ring", when Christopher Foyle returns from America, MI5, suspicious that British atomic research has been infiltrated, asks Foyle to investigate whether a Russian spy network could be at work in the heart of London. In signing on, he's reunited with the now-married Sam, who is working for a scientist involved in the development of the atom bomb.

2013 Nero Award Goes to Chris Knopf for Dead Anyway

Chris Knopf's Dead Anyway has won the 2013 Nero Award, given by the Nero Wolfe Society for literary excellence in the mystery genre. He will receive the award at the annual Black Orchid Banquet on December 7th, 2013.

We've read most of Chris Knopf's work and have yet to be disappointed by anything this outstanding author has written. In our review of Dead Anyway, we called the book "an intricately crafted, superbly plotted novel. It's hard — probably impossible — to say much more than what's been said [in the publisher's synopsis] without giving away too much of what happens, so suffice it to say this is a most entertaining storyline. Too, the author is a master at wordsmithing, both in dialog and narrative."
