A Little Murder by Cindy Davis

A Little Murder by Cindy Davis
An Angie Deacon Mystery
Publisher: Enigma Press
Publication Date: September 11, 2013

A day of fishing on Lake Winnipesaukee sounds like just the medicine for Angie's overworked husband's birthday. In spite of inherent seasickness, she happily goes on the tour with him. How is she to know that by the end of the day they'll both be suspects in the boat owner's death?

As police and the forensics team storm the boat, Angie comforts the distraught widow, who quickly becomes the chief suspect. Which makes sense; besides Valerie, why would any of the five strangers want the insensitive Nolan Little dead?

Fearful Val begs Angie to help clear her name. Angie says no, it's too dangerous. But Val's determined, and Angie goes along to keep her from getting killed — despite the fact that she just caught Will cheating; despite the fact that her brother-in-law has just run off with every penny of their money; despite the fact that black duffle bags are appearing and disappearing more often than Houdini.

She should, but doesn't ask herself, "Could any of these events be related?"

Philip Kerr To Write Young Adult Novel, The Winter Horses

Random House Children's Books

Random House Children's Books announced this morning that it has acquired a young adult novel from crime writer Philip Kerr.

Titled The Winter Horses, the storyline is set in 1941 Ukraine and portrays the survival by one 14-year-old girl who has lost everything, and two endangered horses threatened by a Nazi campaign of extermination in the dark days of World War II. Kerr captures the power of sacrifice and the endurance of the human spirit as he tells the story of Kalinka's treacherous journey across the frozen Ukrainian steppe.

"Philip Kerr skillfully handles the portrayal of an intensely dark period of 20th-century history," said Nancy Hinkel, Vice President and Publishing Director of Alfred A. Knopf Books for Young Readers, in a statement. "We are thrilled to welcome Kerr to the Knopf list."

Philip Kerr is the author of more than 20 books, including nine World War II Bernie Gunther novels, several stand-alone thrillers, and six books in the young adult series "Children of the Lamp" under the pen name of P. B. Kerr.

The Winter Horses will be published on March 25th, 2014.

An Adam Wolf Thriller
Publisher: Steve Trotter

When Adam Wolf retires from a killer career (one that Uncle Sam would deny existed) and resurrects himself as an author of young adult books, he soon discovers that no way in hell is the pen mightier than the sword; not when the mob slaps a verbal contract on your head.

Moments after reluctantly snuffing his 60th birthday candle, Wolf witnesses the snuffing of an ace crime reporter. Wolf's decision to testify against the shooter puts him, and the only woman he's ever let close enough to imperil, in the crosshairs of a ruthless crime family and their outlaw biker hit men. The one problem his hunters didn't count on is that their target is no ordinary senior citizen. Wolf is a black ops vet with a bloody backstory he can never tell. A shadow man who knows that at the end of the day, covert actions speak louder than words.

The Bones of Paris by Laurie R. King

The Bones of Paris
Laurie R. King

Paris, France: September 1929. For Harris Stuyvesant, the assignment is a private investigator's dream — he's getting paid to troll the cafés and bars of Montparnasse, looking for a pretty young woman. The American agent has a healthy appreciation for la vie de bohème, despite having worked for years at the U.S. Bureau of Investigation. The missing person in question is Philippa Crosby, a twenty-two year old from Boston who has been living in Paris, modeling and acting. Her family became alarmed when she stopped all communications, and Stuyvesant agreed to track her down. He wholly expects to find her in the arms of some up-and-coming artist, perhaps experimenting with the decadent lifestyle that is suddenly available on every rue and boulevard.

As Stuyvesant follows Philippa's trail through the expatriate community of artists and writers, he finds that she is known to many of its famous — and infamous — inhabitants, from Shakespeare and Company's Sylvia Beach to Ernest Hemingway to the Surrealist photographer Man Ray. But when the evidence leads Stuyvesant to the Théâtre du Grand-Guignol in Montmartre, his investigation takes a sharp, disturbing turn. At the Grand-Guignol, murder, insanity, and sexual perversion are all staged to shocking, brutal effect: depravity as art, savage human nature on stage.

Soon it becomes clear that one missing girl is a drop in the bucket. Here, amid the glittering lights of the cabarets, hides a monster whose artistic coup de grâce is to be rendered in blood. And Stuyvesant will have to descend into the darkest depths of perversion to find a killer.

They have decided that it's time for Charlie to be sacrificed.

Telemystery: Endemol To Develop English Language Adaptation of French Crime Drama Engrenages

Telemystery: Mystery and Suspense on Television

Endemol Studios has acquired the English-language rights for a US adaptation of the French crime drama Engrenages. The popular series, which is in its fifth season in France and has been renewed for a sixth, is centered on the lives of a prosecutor, police captain, judge, and lawyer.

"The show's masterfully complex storylines and layered characters give us the right blueprint to further explore society's ever-changing codes of justice and develop a distinctive, un-apologetic, gripping television drama set against the backdrop of today's U.S. legal system," said Endemol Studios CEO Philippe Maigret.

Last year Netflix acquired a non-exclusive right to air Engrenages in the US. Currently, the first three seasons are available in French with English subtitles.
