A Tito Amato Mystery (1st in series)
Publisher: Poisoned Pen Press
Venice, 1731. Opera is the popular entertainment of the day and the castrati are its reigning divas. Tito Amato, mutilated as a boy to preserve his enchanting soprano voice, returns to the city of his birth with his friend Felice, a castrato whose voice has failed.
Disaster strikes Tito's opera premier when the singer loses one beloved friend to poison and another to unjust accusation and arrest. Alarmed that the merchant-aristocrat who owns the theater is pressing the authorities to close the case, Tito races the executioner to find the real killer. The possible suspects could people the cast of one of his operas: a libertine nobleman and his spurned wife, a jealous soprano, an ambitious composer, and a patrician family bent on the theater's ruin.
With carnival gaiety swirling around him and rousing Venetian passions to an ominous crescendo, Tito finds that the most astonishing secrets lurk behind the masks of his own family and friends.

City of Bells by Kim Wright
A Trevor Welles, "City of" Mystery
Publisher: Kim Wright
Publication Date: September 07, 2013
Geraldine Bainbridge is well known among her fashionable circa-1889 London set as an heiress, a philanthropist, and a supporter of highly unsuitable causes, including women's rights. Fiercely independent, she is proud of having arrived at the age of 69 without ever having been, in her words, "netted and mounted". But when a mysterious letter arrives from India — sent from a long-ago lover now jailed for the murder of his wife — even Gerry's friends and family realize that they know very little of her romantic past.
As Geraldine journeys to assist with Anthony's defense, she is joined by her close friend Detective Trevor Welles, head of Scotland Yard's first forensics unit, as well we the rest of the Thursday Night Murder Games Club. The group has scarcely arrived in Bombay when it becomes clear this is no ordinary domestic crime, but rather a case with far-reaching political implications, whose roots stretch back to the Great Mutiny of 1857. Scrambling to unravel the clues before the body count goes yet higher, the Club must contend with documents which fall to dust in the wake of white termites, a tree whose sap yields "the perfect murder weapon", the stubborn headmistress of an orphanage, and a meddling politician who seems determined to thwart the investigation at every turn.
As they combat the heat, the insects, the monsoons, and the petty prejudices of the Raj, often finding themselves more in sympathy with the suspects than the victims, Trevor and the others are forced to confront an uncomfortable question: Is murder ever justifiable?

Review: The Never List by Koethi Zan
A Mysterious Review of The Never List by Koethi Zan.
Review summary: The premise of this novel of psychological suspense is an intriguing one, especially with respect to a putative puzzle element. But there isn't much follow-through, most particularly with the characters, who aren't credibly drawn and act in ways contrary to how they are presented. (Click here for text of full review.)

Viking (July 2013)
Publisher synopsis: For years, best friends Sarah and Jennifer kept what they called the “Never List”: a list of actions to be avoided, for safety's sake, at all costs. But one night, against their best instincts, they accept a cab ride with grave, everlasting consequences. For the next three years, they are held captive with two other girls in a dungeon-like cellar by a connoisseur of sadism.
Ten years later, at thirty-one, Sarah is still struggling to resume a normal life, living as a virtual recluse under a new name, unable to come to grips with the fact that Jennifer didn't make it out of that cellar. Now, her abductor is up for parole and Sarah can no longer ignore the twisted letters he sends from jail.
Finally, Sarah decides to confront her phobias and the other survivors — who hold their own deep grudges against her. When she goes on a cross-country chase that takes her into the perverse world of BDSM, secret cults, and the arcane study of torture, she begins unraveling a mystery more horrifying than even she could have imagined.

The Alibi by Sandra Brown
A Novel of Suspense
Publisher: Grand Central
Hammond Cross hails from a wealthy Charleston family, but he eschews his heritage and the advantages it affords, even going far as to choose public service over a more lucrative career in criminal defense. He's ambitious, and has his sights set on higher offices, but his goals aren't strictly politically motivated. He's also an aggressive prosecutor out to win for all the right reasons. He believes in what he's doing and devotes himself to bringing criminals to justice.
Until …
He unwittingly becomes the alibi of an accused murderer.
The captivating and elusive woman with whom he had spent an overnight getaway — a meeting he mistook as happenstance — becomes the prime suspect in the most important criminal case Hammond's career. If he prosecutes it successfully, he'll inherit the top position from the retiring County Solicitor. If he doesn't, he'll have many people to answer to … not the least of which is himself.
To admit his own culpability is self-destructive. To fail is unthinkable. To win is to sacrifice the woman he's come to love.

The Crush by Sandra Brown
A Novel of Suspense
Publisher: Grand Central
As a surgeon, Dr. Rennie Newton is the consummate professional. When she's summoned to jury duty, she brings to the courtroom the same level of competence and composure that she displays in the operating room. It is this commitment to precision that compels her to deliver a not guilty verdict in the murder case against notorious contract killer Ricky Lozada. It will be the most regrettable decision of her life … because Rennie's trial with Lozada doesn't end with his acquittal.
Her carefully structured life begins to crumble when a rival colleague is brutally slain. Lozada's menacing shadow looms over the murder, but it's Rennie the investigators focus on as the prime suspect. The privacy she has cultivated and protected at all costs is violated by the police as well as Lozada. And when he begins an earnest courtship, insinuating himself into every aspect of her life, it becomes terrifyingly clear that he is obsessed with having her.
Wick Threadgill is a detective on indefinite leave from the Fort Worth PD, who has his own personal agenda for the contract killer. Temperamental, bitter, and driven by loyalty and love, Wick is determined to destroy Lozada … as determined as Lozada is to possess Rennie Newton.
In order to defeat Lozada — and save their lives — Rennie and Wick form an uneasy alliance. Mistrustful of each other, they know only one thing with absolute certainty — like one of Lozada's prize scorpions, when this killer strikes, they won't see it coming.

The Switch by Sandra Brown
A Novel of Suspense
Publisher: Grand Central
Gillian and Melina Lloyd are identical, almost interchangeable, twins. Both are successful businesswomen. Both are single. But in one regard there is a dissimilarity: They share the same impulses, but Melina acted on them. She plunged headfirst off the high diving board. Gillian would stand with her toes curled over the end of it until dared to dive in.
Another difference between them is that Gillian wants a child. Feeling her biological clock ticking, she opts to undergo artificial insemination using donor sperm.
Christopher "Chief" Hart is the first Native American astronaut, NASA's poster boy, a national figure. In Dallas to collect an award, Chief's media escort is Melina Lloyd. Or is it?
Chief's life first collides, then becomes intertwined with that of the twins. A seemingly harmless prank results in disaster. And what appears at first to be an open-and-shut murder investigation, ultimately leads to a compound in the mountains of New Mexico where a madman is engineering his "new world order". If he's only partially successful, the consequences would be catastrophic and global in scope.

W is for Wasted
Sue Grafton
Series: Kinsey Millhone (23rd)
Two dead men changed the course of my life that fall. One of them I knew and the other I'd never laid eyes on until I saw him in the morgue.
The first was a local PI of suspect reputation. He'd been gunned down near the beach at Santa Teresa. It looked like a robbery gone bad. The other was on the beach six weeks later. He'd been sleeping rough. Probably homeless. No identification. A slip of paper with Millhone's name and number was in his pants pocket. The coroner asked her to come to the morgue to see if she could ID him.
Two seemingly unrelated deaths, one a murder, the other apparently of natural causes.
But as Kinsey digs deeper into the mystery of the John Doe, some very strange linkages begin to emerge. And before long at least one aspect is solved as Kinsey literally finds the key to his identity. "And just like that," she says, "the lid to Pandora's box flew open. It would take me another day before I understood how many imps had been freed, but for the moment, I was inordinately pleased with myself."
In this multilayered tale, the surfaces seem clear, but the underpinnings are full of betrayals, misunderstandings, and outright murderous fraud. And Kinsey, through no fault of her own, is thoroughly compromised.
W is for … wanderer … worthless … wronged … W is for wasted.
