To uncover the truth, she must dig into the sordid secrets of the city's most powerful families, a quest that will draw her inextricably closer to David and his teenage daughter …and to the cold-blooded killer who's stalking their every move. Cinemystery: DreamWorks Names Director for Film Adaptation of The Light Between Oceans

Cinemystery: Crime Novels Adapted for Film

Last November we reported that DreamWorks had acquired the film rights to M. L. Stedman's novel of psychological suspense The Light Between Oceans. Now we're learning that the studio has hired Derek Cianfrance (The Place Beyond the Pines) to direct the film.

"We certainly believe [Cianfrance] can make a modern epic from [this] poignant novel and will be able to capture the great epic sweep and emotional honestly of this story," said Stacey Snider, Co-Chairman/CEO of DreamWorks.

No screenwriter has (to our knowledge) yet been named for the project.

The Light Between Oceans by M. L. Stedman

The Light Between Oceans
M. L. Stedman

After four harrowing years on the Western Front, Tom Sherbourne returns to Australia and takes a job as the lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock, nearly half a day's journey from the coast. To this isolated island, where the supply boat comes once a season and shore leaves are granted every other year at best, Tom brings a young, bold, and loving wife, Isabel. Years later, after two miscarriages and one stillbirth, the grieving Isabel hears a baby's cries on the wind. A boat has washed up onshore carrying a dead man and a living baby.

Tom, whose records as a lighthouse keeper are meticulous and whose moral principles have withstood a horrific war, wants to report the man and infant immediately. But Isabel has taken the tiny baby to her breast. Against Tom's judgment, they claim her as their own and name her Lucy. When she is two, Tom and Isabel return to the mainland and are reminded that there are other people in the world. Their choice has devastated one of them.

A is for Alibi by Sue Grafton

A is for Alibi by Sue Grafton
A Kinsey Millhone Mystery (1st in series)
Publisher: Macmillan

When Laurence Fife was murdered, few mourned his passing. A prominent divorce attorney with a reputation for single-minded ruthlessness on behalf of his clients, Fife was also rumored to be a dedicated philanderer. Plenty of people in the picturesque southern California town of Santa Teresa had a reason to want him dead. Including, thought the cops, his young and beautiful wife, Nikki. With motive, access, and opportunity, Nikki was their number-one suspect. The jury thought so, too.

Eight years later and out on parole, Niki Fife hires Kinsey Millhone to find out who really killed her late husband.

A trail that is eight years cold. A trail that reaches out to enfold a bitter, wealthy, and foul-mouthed old woman and a young boy, born deaf, whose memory cannot be trusted. A trail that leads to a lawyer defensively loyal to a dead partner — and disarmingly attractive to Millhone; to an ex-wife, brave, lucid, lovely — and still angry over Fife's betrayal of her; to a not-so-young secretary with too high a salary for too few skills — and too many debts left owing: The trail twists to include them all, with Millhone following every turn until it finally twists back on itself and she finds herself face-to-face with a killer cunning enough to get away with murder.

Review: Wayward by Blake Crouch

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of Wayward by Blake Crouch. The Wayward Pines Series.

Review summary: Unlike many novels where the sequel fails to live up to the standards of the first in the series, this thriller does not disappoint. The depiction of Wayward Pines is not only inventive, but it is also terrifying. It isn't hard to imagine a similar horror facing the future of the world. What if Wayward Pines is the only option? What if death awaits those that question? Who would really be able to live in this world of secrets? (Click here for text of full review.)

Our rating: 4 of 5 stars

Never Go Back
Lee Child
Series: Jack Reacher (18th)

Former military cop Jack Reacher makes it all the way from snowbound South Dakota to his destination in northeastern Virginia, near Washington, D.C.: the headquarters of his old unit, the 110th MP. The old stone building is the closest thing to a home he ever had.

Reacher is there to meet — in person — the new commanding officer, Major Susan Turner, so far just a warm, intriguing voice on the phone.

But it isn't Turner behind the CO's desk. And Reacher is hit with two pieces of shocking news, one with serious criminal consequences, and one too personal to even think about.

When threatened, you can run or fight.

Reacher fights, aiming to find Turner and clear his name, barely a step ahead of the army, and the FBI, and the D.C. Metro police, and four unidentified thugs.
