Read our review of The Girl Who Disappeared Twice by Andrea Kane

Despite all her years determining the fates of families, judge Hope Willis couldn't save her own. Her daughter taken, she's frantically grasping at any hope for Krissy's return. Her husband dead-set against it, Hope calls a team not bound by the legal system.

Forensic Instincts: a behaviorist. A techno-wizard. An intuitive. An ex-Navy SEAL. Unconventional operatives. All with unique talents and personal reasons for joining Casey Woods's group, they'll do whatever it takes.

Able to accurately read people after the briefest of encounters, Casey picks up in the Willis household signs of a nervous spouse, a guilty conscience, a nanny that hides on her phone. Secrets beg to creep into the open.

Forensic Instincts will dig through each tiny clue and eliminate the clutter, working around the clock. But time is running out, and Casey's team knows that the difference between getting Krissy back and her disappearing forever could be as small as a suspect's rapid breathing, or as deep as Hope's dark family history.

Review: A Murder in Passing by Mark de Castrique

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of A Murder in Passing by Mark de Castrique. A Sam Blackman Mystery.

Review summary: A very interesting and in many ways clever story is crafted from a missing photograph in this modern mystery that incorporates a real historical time and place. More of a howdunit than a whodunit, the plot moves along at a steady pace, keeping the reader's interest throughout, though coming to an end in a not-unexpected manner. (Click here for text of full review.)

A Sam Blackman Mystery
Poisoned Pen Press (July 2013)

Publisher synopsis: In Asheville, North Carolina, the Blackman & Robertson Detective Agency faces a disturbing reality — no clients. Sam Blackman finds inactivity intolerable. So when partner Nakayla Robertson suggests a mushroom hunt on the site of an historic, freed-slave commune called The Kingdom of the Happy Land, Sam reluctantly agrees. When he stumbles across a skeleton, his adventure mushrooms into a case of murder. But it isn't his case. He has no client, and the local authorities tell him to butt out.

Then Marsha Montgomery comes to the office asking Sam and Nakayla to investigate a burglary at her mother's home. Someone stole a rifle and a photograph of Marsha's mother, grandmother, and great grandmother taken in 1932 by renowned photographer Doris Ulmann. The site of the photograph is The Kingdom of the Happy Land. The date of the burglary, 1967. Marsha's visit is no coincidence. Sam's being played. But why?

When Marsha's eighty-five-year-old mother Lucille is arrested for murder, Sam has his answer and his case. Is the skeleton that of Jimmy Lang, Marsha's white father and her mother's lover, who disappeared in 1967 right after interracial couples were allowed to marry in North Carolina? Jimmy's brother says no. Jimmy left to seek his fortune after Lucille rejected his marriage proposal. But others stood to gain from his disappearance. A veil of betrayal and deceit hides a killer desperate to protect a dark secret, and no one, not even Sam, is safe from the deadly consequences of a murder in passing.

City of Masks by Daniel Hecht

City of Masks by Daniel Hecht
A Cree Black Mystery (1st in series)
Publisher: Bloomsbury

Parapsychologist Cree Black is the founder of a small, nonprofit paranormal research group based in Seattle. Using scientific technologies, historical research, and psychology, Cree and her colleagues investigate claims of ghosts and other paranormal phenomena and try to help the living cope with troubling and inexplicable experiences. Cree herself is a natural empath — one who resonates so strongly with others that she is able to experience their haunts and fears.

Called to New Orleans to investigate a supposed haunting at the 150-year old Beauforte House, Cree's foremost challenge is to accommodate the psychological fragility of Lila Beauforte Warren, who claims to have witnessed terrifying phenomena at the house where she spent her childhood. Is Lila suffering from a neurological or psychiatric disorder, as her family believes, or has she witnessed verifiable paranormal activity?

To find out, Cree must enter her state of mind, spend long hours in the dim rooms of the old house, and unearth secrets from the Beauforte family's hidden past. She soon finds she cannot help Lila unless she solves her own hauntings — deals with her own memories, faces her grief over her husband's death, and confronts her reluctance to embrace normal life. In challenging the ghosts of Beauforte house and taking Lila's problems as her own, she has placed her own survival on the line.

Or is there truth in the Navajo legends of witches, Skinwalkers, and malevolent ghosts? As the terrifying symptoms worsen and Tommy's resistance wanes, it becomes clear that Cree and her colleagues are in a race against time.
