Review: Masaryk Station by David Downing

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of Masaryk Station by David Downing. A John Russell Mystery.

Review summary: This sixth and final entry in the series stands tall in the area of historical fiction. Indeed, it is this mix of historical fact with fictional characters that is the hallmark of the series. Though this book can be read as a stand-alone, start at the beginning and follow along as the war, as it must, changes the lead character and the world around him. A John Russell Mystery
Soho Press (June 2013)

Publisher synopsis: Berln, 1948. Still occupied by the four Allied powers and largely in ruins, the city has become the cockpit of a new Cold War. The legacies of the war have become entangled in the new Soviet-American conflict, creating a world of bizarre and fleeting loyalties — a paradise for spies. As spring unfolds, a Western withdrawal looks increasingly likely. Berlin’s German inhabitants live in fear of the Soviet forces who occupy half the city, and whose legacy of violence has ripped apart many families.

John Russell works for both Stalin's NKVD and the newly created CIA, trying his best to cut himself loose from both before his double-agency is discovered by either. As tensions between the great powers escalate, each passing day makes Russell’s position more treacherous. He and his Soviet liaison, Shchepkin, seek out one final operation — one piece of intelligence so damning it could silence the wrath of one nation and solicit the protection of the other. It will be the most dangerous task Russell has ever taken on, but one way or the other, it will be his last.

Series: Hook Runyon (4th)

Railroad bull Hook Runyon and his dog, Mixer, are chasing persistent pickpockets on the Santa Fe line, when Hook is called to investigate a malfunctioning wigwag signal in the middle of nowhere. A young man has been strung up there, hung from the signal, and left strangled to death. Hook finds no identification on the body, other than a bronze hero's medal around the corpse's neck, with the name Samuel Ash engraved on it. Refusing to bury what seems to be a World War II hero in a pauper's grave, Hook vows to find the dead boy's family, as well as his killer.

With the casket in tow, and slowed down by an over-educated sidekick, Junior Monroe, and a stream of new tasks from the head of division, Hook finally finds his way to Carmen, Oklahoma. But no one there has ever heard of anyone named Samuel Ash. There are secrets in Carmen, most of them associated with the local orphanage and its disliked director, and Hook is determined to get to the bottom of the mystery of the hanging of Samuel Ash.

Book Trends: Reviews of Young Adult and Children Books

Book Trends, a review site for young adult's and children's books, published several new book reviews this past week. We're presenting here a summary of those in the mystery/suspense/thriller category.

CODE by Kathy Reichs and Brendan Reichs. A Virals Novel. Lexile measure: N/A. Reviewed by a 6th grade student, who writes, "This book is just spectacular. … [It] was especially fast paced because the story moved from one scene to another very quickly but at the same time putting in good description, which helped me keep track of what was going on in the story. Also at the end of each chapter there was a cliffhanger, which consumed my mind and made me keep reading." (Read the full review of this middle grade suspense story, here.)

After Life by Rhian Ellis

After Life by Rhian Ellis
A Novel of Psychological Suspense
Publisher: AmazonEncore

Naomi Ash was born in New Orleans and raised by her mother, Patsy, a medium who schooled her young daughter in the parlor-trick chicanery of the trade. From Naomi recreating presences with table cloths to providing the voice of the dead by talking through a fan, their act is part theater, part magic, and a little too much playing with the letter of the law. Eventually they must beat a hasty — and forced — retreat from New Orleans, relocating to Train Line, New York.

A sleepy village founded and inhabited by others with a spiritualist bent, Train Line is populated with card readers, table levitators, and crystal-shop owners. Low-rent "Psychic Faires" are held at the local Holiday Inn, and Patsy's newest creation, "The Mother Galina Psychic Hour," is on the local radio station. The town is a curious mix between old school "table rappers" and the New Age, and it is here that Naomi comes of age, learns the trade, and falls in love. But love is not only a many splendored thing — it can be dangerous as well. And for a young woman caught between fraud and truth, between the world of the living and the world of the dead, and between the secrets and lies of her youth, the past and present will come together in a rush of truth and consequence.
