A Darling Valley Mystery
Publisher: Helen Cassidy Page

What would you do if you sent a $30,000 piece of furniture out for repair and it came back with a deadly package inside?

That's the dilemma facing Olivia M. Granville, OMG to her friends and foes, as though the award-winning architect, interior designer and antiques dealer didn't have enough on her hands.

Olivia, a transplanted Los Angeleno, is the newest resident of Darling Valley, a picturesque town just outside of San Francisco and home of the DV Bills, as Olivia calls the largest concentration of billionaires anywhere in the country. Like the Astors and Rockefellers of old who outdid each other building humongous summer cottages in Newport, the DV Bills outdo each other with eye-popping piles of sticks stuffed with museum quality art hidden in the Marin hills. It was Olivia's plan to make a killing decorating them.

What Olivia liked best about moving to sleepy Darling Valley from LA was the absence of crime. No worrying about parking her car on a side street because it might get stolen. Nobody slipping sticky fingers into her purse and lifting her wallet while an accomplice distracted her at the sale rack at Neiman's. Not having to trip over a dead body blocking the doorway of her office building while the LAPD took their sweet time locking down the crime scene. But the best part of living in Darling Valley was never having to find herself sitting across from Brooks at a dinner party while he romanced his new girlfriend and referred to Olivia as a client.

What she hated about Darling Valley was the 400 miles between its pristine mansions and gritty but happening LA. Not far enough to save her from becoming Detective Gurmeet Richards' lead suspect in a killing of a different kind. Yes, that's Detective Richards of the devastating velvety eyes.

Olivia should have remembered the advice her tea-leaves reading friend, Tuesday, gave her before she left LA. You get what you resist.

A New MystereBook: Death at the Voyager Hotel by Kwei Quartey

New MystereBooks (Mystery eBooks)

Here is a mystery, suspense, or thriller ebook that we recently found — and you may have missed — by sleuthing (as it were) through new titles from independent publishers …

Death at the Voyager Hotel by Kwei Quartey is a mystery novella, potentially the first in a new series, introducing amateur sleuth Paula Djan, a school principal in Accra, Ghana. Quartey is the author of the Darko Dawson mysteries, also set in Ghana, the first of which we rated one of the best books published in 2009.

Death at the Voyager Hotel by Kwei Quartey

Death at the Voyager Hotel by Kwei Quartey
A Paula Djan Mystery
Publisher: Kwei Quartey

In the cosmopolitan West African city of Accra, the Voyager Hotel is widely known as a low-priced, well-run lodging perfectly suited to cash-strapped tourists. But one early March morning, it gains a notoriety it would rather not have. Hotel guest Heather Peterson, a beautiful, young Oregonian teacher, is found dead at the bottom of the pool. The police authorities deem it an accidental drowning, but that raises troubling questions. Heather was a strong swimmer. How could she have drowned, and why was she naked?

Paula Djan, principal of the school at which Heather was a volunteer, suspects foul play and begins to dig around. As she discovers an increasing number of suspects, she encounters hostility from the police investigators, who take a dim view of her snooping. But much more than stepping on a few toes, she may be headed down a dangerous path where the killer lies in wait with every intention to make Paula the second death at the Voyager Hotel.

Review: Death of a Dyer by Eleanor Kuhns

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of Death of a Dyer by Eleanor Kuhns. A Will Rees Mystery.

Review summary: There is a strong sense of time and place in this historical mystery, so much so that it's easy to overlook some of the shortcuts that the plot takes in moving from one point to another. Readers will no doubt pick up on the hints as to the whodunit and whydunit long before the lead character does. (Click here for text of full review.)

A Will Rees Mystery
Minotaur Books (June 2013)

Publisher synopsis: Will Rees feels at home. It's been a long time since he last felt this way — not since before his wife died years ago and he took to the road as a traveling weaver. Now, in 1796, Rees is back on his Maine farm, living with his teenaged son, David, and his housekeeper, Lydia — whose presence contributes more towards his happiness than he's ready to admit. But his domestic bliss is shattered the morning a visitor brings news of an old friend's murder.

Nate Bowditch and Rees hadn't spoken in many long years, but as children they were closer than brothers, and Rees feels his loss acutely. Asked to look into the circumstances surrounding Nate's death, Rees simply can't refuse. At the Bowditch farmstead, Rees quickly discovers that everyone — from Nate's frosty wife to his missing son to the shy serving girl — is hiding something. But are any of them actually capable of murder? Or does the answer lie elsewhere, behind stones no one even knew needed unturning?

Former U.S. Marshal Simon Fisk now works as a private contractor, tracking down and recovering children who were kidnapped by their own estranged parents. He only has one rule: he won't touch stranger abduction cases. He's still haunted by the disappearance of his own daughter years ago when she was just a child, still unsolved, and stranger kidnappings hit too close to home.

Until, that is, six-year-old Lindsay Sorkin disappears from her parents' hotel room in Paris, and the French police deliver Simon an ultimatum: he can spend years in a French jail for his actions during a past case, or he can work with them now to find Lindsay Sorkin. So, Simon sets out in pursuit of the missing child and the truth behind her disappearance. But Lindsay's captors did not leave an easy trail, and following it will take Simon across the continent, through the ritziest nightclubs and the seediest back alleys, into a terrifying world of international intrigue and dark corners of his past he'd rather never face again.
