Mark Hogan has it all. The job. The family. A position on the board at church. All he's missing is a boat. Not just any boat — a 2008 Bayliner 192.

When Reverend Daniel Glory announces that the Rapture is taking place on October 17 at 5:51am, Hogan realizes his boat-buying days are numbered. So he does what any man in his situation would do — he borrows a load of money from the mob.

Not that there's any risk involved: After all, when the Rapture comes, Hogan will be long gone. The mob will never find him.

But when Jesus fails to come back on schedule, Mark Hogan finds the mob is in no mood to discuss the finer points of end–times theology …

Little Black Book of Murder
Nancy Martin
Series: Blackbird Sisters (9th)

Nora Blackbird may have been to the manor borne, but these days money is so tight, she can't afford to lose her job as a society columnist. So when her new boss at the Philadelphia Intelligencer — Australian tabloid editor Gus Hardwicke — tells her to work the celebrity gossip beat or start checking the want ads, the choice is easy.

Now Nora's writing a profile on billionaire fashion designer Swain Starr, who recently retired to build a high-tech organic farm with his new wife, Zephyr, a former supermodel. But before Nora can get the story, the mogul is murdered. And now Gus wants her to snap up an exclusive on who killed Starr before the cops do.

But solving a celebrity murder isn't easy with a home life as colorful as Nora's. Her sort-of-husband, Mick, a former mobster, is associating once again with unsavory characters. Her sister Libby is on a mission to get her diabolical twins on stage or screen with the help of an unscrupulous former child star. And the youngest Blackbird sister, Emma, just got kicked out of the house by Mick — who refuses to explain why.

If anything can bring the blue-blooded Blackbird sisters together, it's a murder investigation involving high-society events, glamorous people, and the disappearance of a genetically perfect pig that may or may not be basking in the sun at Blackbird Farm. They'll all have to pull together this time, because if Nora can't bring home the bacon, she might have to exchange her bucolic estate for a cramped walk-up.

A Test of Wills by Charles Todd

A Test of Wills by Charles Todd
An Ian Rutledge Mystery (1st in series)
Publisher: HarperCollins

In 1914, Ian Rutledge left a brilliant career at Scotland Yard to fight in the Great War. Now, in 1919, he is back, burdened with a heavy secret: he is still suffering from shell shock. With him almost constantly is the cynical, taunting voice of the young Scots soldier he was forced to have executed on the battlefield for refusing to fight.

In a desperate gamble to salvage his sanity, Rutledge takes up his duties at Scotland Yard. But a colleague, jealous of Rutledge's pre-war successes, has learned his secret and maneuvers to have him assigned to a case that promises to spell disaster no matter what the outcome. In a Warwickshire village, a popular retired military officer has been murdered, and the chief suspect is, unhappily for the Inspector, a much-decorated war hero and a friend of the Prince of Wales.

Rutledge, fighting his malady and the tormentor in his head (who is the personification of his own doubts and guilt), doggedly goes about his investigation. He digs into the lives of the villagers: the victim's ward, a young woman now engaged to the chief suspect; a local artist shunned because of her love for a German prisoner; the reclusive cousins whose cottage adjoins the dead man's estate. But the witness who might be able to tell him the most is a war-ravaged ex-soldier who chills Rutledge with the realization that if he loses control of himself, he could become this man.

Please Welcome Mystery and Romance Author Angel Sefer

Omnimystery News: Guest Post by Angel Sefer
with Angel Sefer

We are delighted to welcome mystery and romance author Angel Sefer to Omnimystery News.

Angel's first book in her "Greek Isles" series is Spellbound in His Arms (CreateSpace; June 2013 trade paperback and ebook formats).

We asked Angel to tell us more about the backstory to the book, and her guest post today is titled, "Blending an Enchanting Romantic Mystery with an Exotic Location".

— ♦ —

I've always been fascinated by the magical world of books and I'm passionate about reading and writing novels. I believe that depending on the genre, a good novel can be stimulating, intriguing, refreshing, educational, relaxing, dramatic or enjoyable and entertaining. As a writer, I've always wondered about the right recipe for a fascinating book, especially a mystery. Is it just the plot and the characters, or is there something more?

Angel Sefer

Angel Sefer

Of course, the backbone of a mystery book is the plot, and it has to be intriguing, with interesting twists and turns to keep the reader glued to the pages. The characters must be well-developed as well. They have to be "real" people with feelings and a defined background, so that the reader can relate to them, feel their emotions, and get involved in the interaction and the process of solving the mystery.

But for me, just as important as the plot and the characters is the setting. I believe visiting an exotic place through the pages of a book gives the reader an additional advantage. I love reading mystery and romance novels, and throughout the years, I preferred the ones that took place in majestic destinations around the world. It was exciting to let the wings of my imagination take me there and feel like I actually visited the place. So for me, the right recipe is to blend mystery, romance, and an exotic location in a captivating plot. I particularly enjoy reading about smart heroines with fiery personalities and larger-than-life heroes. I tried to make the main characters in my novel, Spellbound in His Arms, fit this ideal image of protagonists for a great romantic mystery.

Having visited numerous Greek islands — alluring destinations which cast a spell on the visitor from the very first moment — I found the ideal settings for quite a few of my books. I have written a whole series of romance and mystery novels, The Greek Isles Series, each taking place on a different island. In this series, while sharing with my readers the development of the romance between my hero and heroine and the unfolding of the mystery, I take the opportunity to also share with them the unbelievable experience of visiting some of the most enchanting Greek islands — places of impeccable beauty where nature exists lavishly in hundreds of shades of green and blue, and in which centuries of Greek tradition coexist harmoniously with cosmopolitan activity.

Spellbound in His Arms is the first novel published in The Greek Isles Series. While writing this novel, I tried to convey to the reader the beauty of the island of Corfu without taking away from the darker elements of the mystery plot …
