Killer's Island by Anna Jansson

Killer's Island
Anna Jansson
A Maria Wern Mystery
Stockholm Text

A myth from the Swedish island of Gotland about the White Sea-Lady has existed ever since Tjelvar, the first man on Gotland, lit a fire and the island rose out of the sea, said to be some 3,000 years ago. The story is told that a young woman who drowned on her wedding night has since tried to lure men down to the deadly underwater currents that tumble off the west coast.

The myth of the White Sea-Lady is conjured up one midsummer Gotland island morning, just before a nurse is found murdered in the pavilion on the Tempel Hill of Gorland, in the Botanic garden. She is dressed as a bride. Detective Inspector Maria Wern is investigating the case, but it becomes clear that instead it is the police who are under observation. The killer seems omnipotent, able to taunt and provoke the police with a technical know-how that far exceeds their own.

As the killer's demonic plans are being contrived, Inspector Maria Wern realizes the threat that increases with every moment the killer goes undetected.

The Panopticon
Jenni Fagan

Anais Hendricks, fifteen, is in the back of a police car. She is headed for the Panopticon, a home for chronic young offenders. She can't remember what's happened, but across town a policewoman lies in a coma and Anais's school uniform is covered in blood.

Raised in foster care from birth and moved through twenty-three placements before she even turned seven, Anais has been let down by just about every adult she has ever met. Now a counter-culture outlaw, she knows that she can only rely on herself. And yet despite the parade of horrors visited upon her early life, she greets the world with the witty, fierce insight of a survivor.

Anais finds a sense of belonging among the residents of the Panopticon — they form intense bonds, and she soon becomes part of an ad hoc family. Together, they struggle against the adults that keep them confined. When she looks up at the watchtower that looms over the residents though, Anais knows her fate: she is an anonymous part of an experiment, and she always was. Now it seems that the experiment is closing in.

Justice by Karen Robards
A Romantic Thriller
Publisher: Gallery Books

Feisty criminal attorney Jessica Ford has done her best to comply with the orders of the Secret Service's unofficial witness protection program ever since she became the lone witness to the First Lady's murder. She changed her name, dyed her dark hair blonde, and traded her sturdy black-rimmed glasses for contact lenses. Unfortunately, winning her first high-profile case for prestigious Washington, D.C., law firm Ellis Hayes, and subsequently landing her face all over the news, is not exactly "keeping a low profile". Or so says hunky Secret Service agent Mark Ryan, whose newest assignment — despite Jess's stubborn protests — is keeping her safe at all costs. It just so happens he's also her ex-boyfriend.

The trial earns Jess a permanent spot on the firm's elite legal defense team, replacing an associate who eloped suddenly and never came back. It's the chance of a lifetime. But Jess's mind has raced with questions from the moment the prosecution's star witness shocked the courtroom with an electrifying revelation involving the handsome son of a powerful U.S. senator. Was the pretty, young mother intimidated into changing her story on the stand? Why will she not return Jess's calls? Did Jess's ambitious predecessor on the case really just abandon her successful career? Or did both women mysteriously disappear?

After Mark rescues Jess from an attacker outside her apartment, she begins to consider the possibility that she is a target. Maybe it's not so bad to have her irresistibly charming and hard-bodied former lover around for protection. Maybe. The question is, which of the many inadvertent enemies Jess has made recently is he protecting her from? The investigation leads her to some startling coincidences — and to a teenage runaway who may just hold the missing link … if Jess can find her.

As Jess hurtles closer to the truth — and the sexual tension between her and Mark grows hotter than ever — she finds herself in a race against the clock to find the answers before what she doesn't know gets them both killed.

A Conversation with Mystery Author Kathryn Long

Omnimystery News: Author Interview with Kathryn Long
with Kathryn Long

We are delighted to welcome mystery author Kathryn Long to Omnimystery News today.

Kathryn's new paranormal murder mystery is Dying To Dream (Mainly Murder Press; May 2013 trade paperback and ebook format), and we recently had the opportunity to talk to her about it.

— ♦ —

Omnimystery News: Your books cross several genres, but could they all be considered mysteries?

Kathryn Long
Photo provided courtesy of
Kathryn Long

Kathryn Long: Mostly mysteries. My Lilly M. series are cozies and my latest release, Dying to Dream, is paranormal. The advantage is I think you have in categorizing books into sub-genres is to find a specific target audience to initially gain a base of readers. The only disadvantage might be missing out on snagging a reader who typically doesn't go for my sub-genres. I don't see that as really impacting, though.

OMN: Have you included any of your own personal or professional experience into your books?

KL: My Lilly M. mystery series stems from some personal history. The town setting is loosely based on my hometown of Barberton. The ethnic background of the characters is Serbian with character names like Millenovanovich and there's Aunt Sadie's bakery selling Kifle, which was a typical dessert baked and served in our family. Even the Popovich sisters are similar to my mom and her sisters, although I can't say that Aunt Fran with her risqué behavior is anything remotely close to my family members!

Dying to Dream reflects my interest in the paranormal, and my knowledge of French and Spanish is incorporated into the dialog of some of the characters, which I hope gives them more authenticity. The balk of what went into the story is based on hours and days of research. I think I'm the research queen of all authors! It's one of my favorite parts of writing a novel.

OMN: Tell us how the book came to be titled, and about the cover design.

KL: I love play on words, and the title, Dying to Dream, reflects that. I actually started thinking about creating a series where the words die and dream may be a part of each title. In any case, I based this title on the main character's psychic gift, which is that she dreams the dreams of spirits, experiencing what they feel and think. This helps her to solve a murder mystery, but at the same time puts her life in danger. The book cover — I have to give a big thank you to my publisher's cover design artist, Karen Phillips, who did a super job — reflects on three elements of the story: a woman dressed in black, the tombstone with its backward dates and a rose. These are part of a dream continuously haunting Marin and they become important clues to the mystery.

OMN: What kinds of books did you read when you were young?

KL: My first influence during early childhood was Carolyn Keene who wrote the Nancy Drew Mysteries. I have kept them all, nearly fifty at last count. I loved the idea of a strong, young woman who solved mysteries. Then, in my teens and early twenties I started reading every Mary Stewart novel. Her romantic suspense kept me up late at night on numerous occasions.

OMN: What authors do you look to now for inspiration?

KL: There are so many who influenced me that I'd like to think my writing style is a compilation of many of them and thus making mine unique. Kathryn Long style! I don't have room to mention them all, but at the top of the list are Stephen King — I love the richness of his prose; Janet Evanovich — her comic relief moments intermixed with suspense always make me laugh; James Patterson — fast-paced, concise language divided into short chapters sustains my reading interest; and James Lee Burke — again, the richness of his language, the way he phrases his words, his descriptive narratives, all of that make me so envious!

OMN: What are some of your outside interests?

KL: The obvious first is my love of reading. Give me a choice of going out for a night on the town or staying at home curled up with a juicy mystery, without hesitation I'd take the second option. I don't really have any hobbies. I do love the outdoors in the summertime, visiting the ocean, and being anywhere peaceful and quiet. I guess maybe that's why most of my work takes place in the summertime and often the setting is some town close to the ocean! And I love to watch any mystery television series, Bones being one of my favorites, and any movies in that category, the two Sherlock Holmes movies with Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, for instance.

OMN: Give us a Top 5 list on any topic.

KL: Top 5 Books to Read — my recommendations (these are in no particular order):

1) Goodbye Emily by Michael Murphy;
2) In the Electric Mist with Confederate Dead by James Lee Burke;
3) The Beach House by Mary Alice Monroe;
4) Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver; and
5) anything by Janet Evanovich or James Patterson for fun or a quick read. I just noticed how three of these are not mysteries!

OMN: What's next for you?

KL: Book related: Working on the third novel in the Lilly M series and planning to continue my work on another ghost mystery based on a well-known site that's part of my hometown history. Also, getting ready to do edits on a romantic suspense novel I have contracted with The Wild Rose Press due out next year.

Personally related: Adjusting to being retired from teaching and planning a trip or two. So far, it's an easy and welcomed transition!

High finance and haute cuisine … a recipe for murder!

It's been years since former stockbroker Madeline Carter bothered thinking about her gastronomically gifted ex-husband, Chef Braydon Gauthier. Between quitting her soul-sucking career and discovering what life is like during daylight hours she's been kind of busy. But when Madeline learns Braydon took his own life, she drops everything and hightails it to the funeral.

It doesn't take long to realize Braydon's death is more murder than suicide. Madeline knows her ex would never have prepared himself a poison-laced dinner of duck a l'orange — let alone pair it with a big, beefy Shiraz! The culinary star would have eaten fast food first.

So who's responsible? Madeline definitely has her suspicions, but one thing's clear: in the pressure-cooker world of high cuisine and higher stakes, a reputation is worth killing for.

When a nerve gas shipment goes missing, the nation's fate hangs in the balance …

John Graves is a State Department intelligence agent who made his name on the front lines of the Cold War. Since then, he's been transferred to domestic work, and his love for the job has withered away. All that sustains him is the hunt for John Wright — a crazed millionaire who is about to unleash the greatest domestic threat Graves's agency has ever faced.

When seven mobsters rob a U.S. Army train in the middle of the Utah desert and make off with half a ton of the deadliest nerve gas known to man, Graves believes that Wright is involved. His plan: to detonate the weapon in San Diego during the Republican National Convention — an attack that would kill more than one million Americans, including the president. Stopping Wright will take more than police work. It is a chess match between agent and madman, and for Graves, checkmate is not an option.
