A Bannon and Clare Fantasy Mystery
Orbit

Emma Bannon, forensic sorceress in the service of the Empire, has a mission: to protect Archibald Clare, a failed, unregistered mentath. His skills of deduction are legendary, and her own sorcery is not inconsiderable. It doesn't help much that they barely tolerate each other, or that Bannon's Shield, Mikal, might just be a traitor himself. Or that the conspiracy killing registered mentaths and sorcerers alike will just as likely kill them as seduce them into treachery toward their Queen.

In an alternate London where illogical magic has turned the Industrial Revolution on its head, Bannon and Clare now face hostility, treason, cannon fire, black sorcery, and the problem of reliably finding hansom cabs.

The game is afoot …

The Third Bullet by Stephen Hunter

The Third Bullet
Stephen Hunter
A Bob Lee Swagger Mystery
Simon & Schuster

It's not even a clue. It's a whisper, a trace, a ghost echo, drifting down through the decades via chance connections so fragile that they would disintegrate in the puff of a breath. But it's enough to get legendary former Marine sniper Bob Lee Swagger interested in the events of November 22, 1963, and the third bullet that so decisively ended the life of John F. Kennedy and set the stage for one of the most enduring controversies of our time.

Swagger begins his slow night stalk through a much-traveled landscape. But he's asking questions that few have asked before: Why did the third bullet explode? Why did Lee Harvey Oswald, about to become the most hunted man on earth, risk it all by returning to his rooming house to secure a pistol he easily could have brought with him? How could a conspiracy that went unpenetrated for fifty years have been thrown together in the two and a half days between the announcement of the president's route and the assassination itself?

As Bob investigates, another voice enters the narrative: knowing, ironic, almost familiar, that of a gifted, Yale-educated veteran of the CIA Plans Division. Hugh Meachum has secrets and the means and the will to keep them buried. When weighed against his own legacy, Swagger's life is an insignificant expense — but to blunt the threat, he'll first have to ambush the sniper.

As each man hunts the other across today's globe and through the thickets of history, Bob Lee Swagger will prove what has always known: it's never too late for justice.

A conman hiding out in Atlantic City lays his life on the line for a shot at a $250,000 payoff …

Mona has a millionaire husband, a million-dollar figure, and hair that's blonde to the roots. She's just what Leonard K. Blake is looking for. Of course, that's not his real name. Nor is it David Gavilan — that's the one he used in Philly, before he skipped out on a $600 hotel bill and jumped a train to Atlantic City. He doesn't have a name or a profession, but he's got a knack for storytelling and knows just what Mona needs to hear.

He also has a pair of stolen suitcases that he grabbed at the train station. They happen to contain a brick of pure heroin — enough to make him dead or make him rich — and they happen to belong to Mona's husband. As if a good-looking blonde wasn't trouble enough.

Tom Cruise stars as the titular drifter in this adaptation of Lee Child's One Shot, the ninth book in his series featuring the character but the first to be filmed. The strong points are the film's screenplay and direction; the principal performances are adequate to the story, ranging from predictable to clumsy (though Robert Duvall has a terrific small part). Overall, I enjoyed this thriller and wouldn't mind seeing Cruise reprise the role in a future film.

Telemystery: The Bridge Premieres Wednesday, July 10th on FX Networks

Telemystery Prime Time Crime: Mystery and Suspense on Television

The FX Networks crime thriller The Bridge premieres tomorrow, Wednesday July 10th at 10 PM ET/PT. The series is based on the Swedish/Danish co-produced drama Bron/Broen.

When an American judge known for her anti-immigration views is found dead on the bridge connecting El Paso and Juarez, Sonya Cross (Diane Kruger) from the El Paso Police Department must work with her Mexican counterpart from Chihuahua State Police, Marco Ruiz (Demian Bichir), to catch a serial killer operating on both sides of the border. Marco understands the slippery politics of Mexican law enforcement, and while his police force slowly succumbs to the pressures and demands of the cartel, he's one of the last good men in the department. He's charming, but also cunning as he will do whatever it takes to get what he needs. This does not sit well with Sonya, who has Asperger's and strictly follows rules as well as protocol. Her candid and off-putting personality fuels an unforgiving drive for truth. The case quickly pulls them into a string of murders on the border, a scene already consumed by illegal immigration, drug trafficking, violence and prostitution.

Telemystery: James Patterson's Private Thrillers to be Adapted for Television

Telemystery: Mystery and Suspense on Television

Though James Patterson — with all due credit to his stable of co-authors — has achieved great success with publishing what seems like a book a month, the transition of his novels to television has been, well, uneven. That's doesn't stop studios from trying.

The latest is Sonar Entertainment via Tribeca Productions, which is planning an adaptation of Patterson's "Private" thrillers. Brad Furman (The Lincoln Lawyer, Runner Runner) is set to direct a two-part pilot written by John McLaughlin (Black Swan, Coma, Hitchcock, Parker). The project doesn't yet have a home on network or cable television.

Please Welcome Novelist J.T. Riggen

Omnimystery News: Guest Post by J.T. Riggen
with J.T. Riggen

We are delighted to welcome novelist J.T. Riggen to Omnimystery News.

J.T.'s debut thriller is Uptown (Dog Ear Publishing; May 2013 trade paperback and ebook formats), and today he introduces us to the book by providing a backstory to the characters and the storyline.

J.T. Riggen

My debut novel tackles the issue of sex trafficking head on, with an irresistibly-captivating and thought-provoking narrative.

The story is told from multiple simultaneous perspectives creating complex feelings of attachment to each character including the hero, the villain, and the victim, and will keep readers guessing as to which character fits into each role all the way to the fast-paced and breathtaking conclusion.

It is a book based on opposite/opposing perspectives as well as how far people are willing to go to achieve "true justice", and to what degree an act can be "just" when the path to get it becomes so twisted and sinister.

It also raises some deeper and more profound gray-area questions regarding our perception of ethics, morals, and the current system. Rachel Davis' story will captivate and inspire while the juxtaposition of the other characters will force people to think about where their morals and ethics lie.

I want my readers to have something totally new to sink their teeth into. Sex trafficking is a very real problem in our country, yet few books will fictionalize it for fear of offending victims. I'm certainly trying to push the boundaries in a way that highlights the problems we face with this reprehensible illegal trade, while staying respectful of those living the life for themselves.

Writing Uptown has been the most fun and rewarding experience I have ever had. When I first started writing this novel it was simply because I was in-between jobs at the time and wanted to keep myself busy by pursuing a lifelong passion in writing. After a couple weeks my mind began to race faster and faster with bigger and better ideas. It came to a point where I had to slow myself down and start the process from the beginning with a bit more intention and focus.

I decided to tackle this book starting with the characters. I knew that this would be a multiple POV novel, and I wanted the content to force the reader to empathize and sympathize with everyone's story. Jose Ortega, a famous Spanish philosopher wrote, "Yo soy yo y mi circunstancia," which translated means, "I am I plus my circumstances." This holds true within each character's presentation and plays to the reader's emotional connection to each individual. A book can have the best, most original and fast paced action sequences ever written, but without extreme investment in characters, those scenes become worthless. So I started by writing down every single character's deepest and most deep-rooted personality traits/strengths/and flaws as if writing their autobiography from a psychotherapist's point of view.

For example here is a look at my actual, original pass at the characterization of the main character, Mark Kennedy:

Mark Kennedy is a hyper-motivated, highly trained, intelligent individual that is overrun with complex and often conflicting attitudes, morals, and perspective. He wants desperately to make a difference and help those who are truly in need. He wants desperately to do right by his colleagues, friends, and family. However, he often finds himself on the razor's edge between behaviour that is truly ethical (despite its legality) and behaviour that is certainly not, especially when it comes to his investigations. Burdened by the system and personal loss, he finally takes his first step down a dark path that leads him to commit a brutal crime for which he is sentenced to life in prison without parole. Completely disenfranchised, the line between right and wrong blur and fade. His ability to be icy-calm in high stress situations, coupled with his developing superficial confidence and anxiety during day-to-day life spreads his psyche thin, and makes him as much an invaluable asset as it does a dangerous liability to all he comes into contact with.

From this point in the process, once the character profiles were complete, I envisioned that the story I was about to tell was simply a retrospective documentary on a series of individual events that collided; a series of "truths" that converged and compiled to create the story, Uptown. I hope you all enjoy!

Jim Riggen hails from Montpelier, Vermont. After graduating from the University of Vermont, he moved to Miami, Florida, where he attended Barry University's Physician Assistant Master's program. The sharp contrasts between his hometown and Miami fascinated him. Especially intriguing was the idea that so many individual life-changing events can occur simultaneously — a birth and a death, a wedding and a kidnapping — and how these different paths can collide unexpectedly, leading Jim to write Uptown, a book founded on these stark contrasts.

Uptown by J.T. Riggen

Uptown
J.T. Riggen
A Crime Thriller

Ex-Detective Mark Kennedy was sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison for his part in a vicious, mob-related crime. He does what he must to survive prison life, and when he suddenly finds himself free — back amongst old friends and enemies-he is drawn into a life he never thought he would lead again.

Rachel Davis is a capable young woman, ready for college and the beginning of her new life, yet she is unprepared for the terror that awaits her on an innocent night out on the town.

Detective Will Sutherland thought he had escaped the corruption of his previous job when he moved to Brattleboro, Vermont, but with the sudden rise in local violent crime, he is forced to face his past-and his dangerous obsession with his own investigation.

Set against the backdrop of a luxurious, state-of-the-art casino that attracts both high rollers and the lowest of criminals, these characters' individual stories are woven into a dark tapestry. It's a world where manipulation means control, and the concept of trust is the difference between life and death.

Who is willing to go the furthest and break the rules to achieve justice? And to what degree is justice served when the path to attain it turns sinister and twisted?

New Poster for Suspense Thriller Oldboy

Oldboy (October 2013)

A new poster has been released by FilmDistrict for the suspense thriller Oldboy (right; click for larger image). The tagline: "Ask not why you were imprisoned. As why you were set free."

An advertising executive (Josh Brolin) is kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement. When he is inexplicably released, he embarks on an obsessive mission to discover who orchestrated his punishment, only to find he is still trapped in a web of conspiracy and torment. His quest for revenge leads him into an ill-fated relationship with a young social worker (Elizabeth Olsen) and ultimately to an illusive man (Sharlto Copley), who allegedly holds the key to his salvation.

This remake of a 2003 Japanese film of the same title is directed by Spike Lee from an adapted screenplay by Mark Protosevich and (loosely) based on the manga by Garon Tsuchiya and Nobuaki Minegishi. Oldboy opens in theaters October 25th, 2013. A trailer is expected later this week.
