A Delicate Truth by John le Carré

[6]: A Delicate Truth
John le Carré

2008. A counter-terrorist operation, codenamed Wildlife, is being mounted on the British crown colony of Gibraltar. Its purpose: to capture and abduct a high-value jihadist arms-buyer. Its authors: an ambitious Foreign Office Minister, a private defense contractor who is also his bosom friend, and a shady American CIA operative of the evangelical far-right. So delicate is the operation that even the Minister's personal private secretary, Toby Bell, is not cleared for it.

Cornwall, UK, 2011. A disgraced Special Forces Soldier delivers a message from the dead. Was Operation Wildlife the success it was cracked up to be — or a human tragedy that was ruthlessly covered up? Summoned by Sir Christopher ("Kit") Probyn, retired British diplomat, to his decaying Cornish manor house, and closely observed by Kit's beautiful daughter, Emily, Toby must choose between his conscience and duty to his Service. If the only thing necessary to the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing, how can he keep silent?

Silken Prey by John Sandford

[7]: Silken Prey
John Sandford
— Lucas Davenport (23rd)

Very early one morning, a Minnesota political fixer answers his doorbell. The next thing he knows, he's waking up on the floor of a moving car, lying on a plastic sheet, his body wet with blood. When the car stops, a voice says, "Hey, I think he's breathing," and another voice says, "Yeah? Give me the bat." And that's the last thing he knows.

Davenport is investigating another case when the trail leads to the man's disappearance, then — very troublingly — to the Minneapolis police department, then — most troublingly of all — to a woman who could give Machiavelli lessons. She has very definite ideas about the way the world should work, and the money, ruthlessness, and sheer will to make it happen.

No matter who gets in the way.

Soon Spenser and his apprentice, Zebulon Sixkill, find a trail leading to a mysterious and beautiful woman, a megalomaniacal Las Vegas kingpin, and plans to turn to a chunk of land north of Boston into a sprawling casino. Bitter rivals emerge, alliances turn, and the uglier pieces of the Boston political machine look to put an end to Spenser's investigation.

Aspiration, greed, and twisted dreams all focus on the old Wonderland dog track where the famous amusement park once fronted the ocean. For Spenser and Z, this simple favor to Henry will become the fight of their lives.

Review: Good People by Ewart Hutton

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of …

Good People by Ewart Hutton. A Glyn Capaldi Mystery.

Review summary: There is much to like about this debut crime novel, which is centered on a complicated case, the artfully crafted layers of which make for a very compelling story … though it ends on a somewhat abrupt, melodramatic note. Still and all, this is a solid start to a promising series featuring a strong lead character. (Click here for text of full review.)

Our rating: 4 of 5 stars

Good People Ewart Hutton

Good People
Ewart Hutton
A Glyn Capaldi Mystery
Minotaur Books (April 2013)

Publisher synopsis: Detective Sergeant Glyn Capaldi, fallen from grace and exiled from Cardiff to the Welsh countryside, does his best to serve as the catchall detective in the big bit in the middle that God gave to the sheep. It's a place where nothing of any significance is meant to happen, a place where his superiors believe he can do little harm.

But trouble has a way of catching up with Capaldi. Six men and a young woman disappear after a night of rugby and drink. They don't all reappear. The ones who do are "good people", and they give a reasonable explanation for the absence of the woman and their friend. Only Capaldi remains unconvinced. In the face of opposition, Capaldi delves deeper and starts to uncover a network of conflicts, betrayals, and depravity that resonates below the outwardly calm surface of rural respectability.

Kathy Clark
A Novel of Romantic Suspense
Publisher: Kathy Clark

First published in 1990 by Harlequin.

There was a dead man in a pond. Nicki "saw" it over and over, both when she was awake and asleep. But she didn't know who it was, where the pond was or even if it was real or just a nightmare. The mud on her shoes and her clothes made her wonder if she had actually been there and had repressed the memory. Finally, not knowing if she is guilty or innocent, crazy or sane, she confided her fears to detective Jake Kelly.

Jake wanted to believe she was innocent, but his investigations proved that everything she had "seen" had been completely accurate. She had the most to gain and the most to lose. They both needed to know the truth … but truth brought danger.

A Novel of Suspense
Publisher: Taylor Street Publishing

In the quiet wilderness of the Appalachian mountains, a ruthless serial killer is making his presence felt.

He knows every crevice, every creek, every cave and every ravine of his remote hunting ground. Relentless, he is always waiting for the next victim to cross his path. And the killings are merciless. A woman's head surfaces from a frozen lake. Bodies are found slit open, shorn of their hair, fillings removed from their teeth.

Panic grips mountain communities as the killer makes his mark in West Virginia, Kentucky, Georgia and Tennessee. Women are losing their lives one-by-one.

The police and FBI are setting up roadblocks throughout the Appalachians, looking in parks and checking rest stops along the Interstates, but Sheriff Wayne thinks they are looking in all the wrong places.

Mrs. Jones by B. A. Morton

Mrs. Jones
B. A. Morton
A Tommy Connell Mystery
Publisher: Taylor Street Publishing

Ruggedly pragmatic but honest cop Detective Tommy Connell picks up an English girl, Mrs Jones, who claims to be the witness to a murder, and promptly falls in love with her.

Well, Mrs Jones, whoever she is, must be very attractive because an awful lot of people seem to want to get their hands on her if they can prise her from Connell's determined grasp, including some prominent representatives of organised crime and the Feds.

Detective Connell definitely has his work cut out here if he wants to end up with the body of Mrs Jones, dead or alive, that's for sure.

All-in-all it's probably safe to say he hasn't a clue what is going on. It is probably equally safe to guess that Mrs Jones does.

Not that "safe" is quite the right word to use here or, there again, maybe it is.
