Review: Birthdays for the Dead by Stuart MacBride

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of …

Birthdays for the Dead by Stuart MacBride.

Review summary: The crimes depicted in this police procedural are horrific beyond description, but are intended not to shock the reader but to help define, and later develop, the detective investigating them. Too much misdirection, some of it introduced in a surprisingly clumsy manner, both slows down and muddles the storyline as it is unfolding. (Click here for text of full review.)

Winner of the 2011 CWA John Creasey New Blood Dagger Award for best first novel.

Christine wakes up every morning in an unfamiliar bed with an unfamiliar man. She looks in the mirror and sees an unfamiliar, middle-aged face. And every morning, the man she has woken up with must explain that he is Ben, he is her husband, she is forty-seven years old, and a terrible accident two decades earlier decimated her ability to form new memories.

But it's the phone call from a Dr. Nash, a neurologist who claims to be working with Christine without her husband's knowledge, that directs her to her journal, hidden in the back of her closet. For the past few weeks, Christine has been recording her daily activities — tearful mornings with Ben, sessions with Dr. Nash, flashes of scenes from her former life — and rereading past entries, relearning the facts of her life as retold by the husband she is completely dependent upon. As the entries build up, Christine asks many questions. What was life like before the accident? Why did she and Ben never have a child? What has happened to Christine's best friend? And what exactly was the horrific accident that caused such a profound loss of memory?

Every day, Christine must begin again the reconstruction of her past. And the closer she gets to the truth, the more unbelievable it seems.

Telemystery: NBC Acquires Crossing Lines to Air Summer 2013

Telemystery Prime Time Crime: Mystery and Suspense on Television

We first heard of the crime drama Crossing Lines when it was announced last year at MIPTV. Co-produced by German producer Tandem and Criminal Minds showrunner Ed Bernero, the storyline taps into the charter of the International Criminal Court (ICC) to mandate a special crime unit to investigate serialized crimes that cross over European borders and to hunt down criminals to bring them to justice.

We're now learning that NBC has acquired the US broadcast rights to the series, which it will air during Summer 2013.

"We're making scripted projects a priority for our summer lineup, and this is a great fit," said Robert Greenblatt, Chairman of NBC Entertainment.

"Fans of procedural crime shows will feel very much at home with Crossing Lines and adopt its team of characters as their new family," added Bernero. "I couldn't be more pleased to come home to NBC, which recognized the show's potential."

Starring William Fichtner, Marc Lavoine, Gabriella Pession, Tom Wlaschiha, Genevieve O'Reilly, Richard Flood, and Donald Sutherland, the series was filmed on location in Fall 2012 in France and the Czech Republic. Ten episodes comprise the first season.

Denise Mina To Write Graphic Novel Adaptations of Second and Third Books of The Millennium Trilogy by Stieg Larsson

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Volume 1 by Denise Mina

Crime novelist Denise Mina, the author of the graphic novel adaptation of Stieg Larsson's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, has confirmed she will write adaptations of the two sequels, all three books of which are collectively known as "The Millennium Trilogy".

"Yes! I'm writing the rest of them too!" she tells Pamela Brown (of Mulholland Books). "I'm halfway through the script for The Girl Who Played With Fire and moving on to The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest. I'm loving it. It's great to be writing comics again and with an adaptation I can worry more about the visuals and less about the narrative arc. The books are so dense it's a matter of cutting back and cutting back."

The second volume of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo graphic novel will be published on May 7th, 2013. A free preview of the first volume can be seen via the links, below.
