A Dana Lewis, Blossom Valley Mystery (1st in series)

Welcome to Blossom Valley, CA, home of the O'Connell Organic Farm and Spa, complete with its new marketing maven, Dana Lewis, former Blossom Valley resident and unapologetic junk food connoisseur — and soon to be sleuth.

As Dana readjusts to life back home with her recently widowed mother, her latest career move isn't exactly a piece of cake. In fact, it's all tofu fish sticks, stuffed squash blossoms, and enough wheat grass shots to scream bloody murder — especially when Dana discovers the body of Maxwell Mendelsohn, Hollywood producer and opening weekend guest, deader than a yoga corpse pose. While Dana pens the Spa's blog and balances the attentions of the local police and reporter Jason Forrester, her escalating job duties now include finding clues, motives and suspects. One thing's for certain, she better act fast before all this healthy living kills her.

Review: Aloha, Lady Blue by Charley Memminger

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of …

Aloha, Lady Blue by Charley Memminger. A Stryker McBride Mystery.

Review summary: The murder mystery in this debut novel is far too complicated and convoluted; the way it develops and is resolved seems rather ill-suited for the character and not in keeping with the overall tone of the book. It almost appears as if the author is trying too hard to find a voice that isn't his hoping it all gels in the end. It doesn't miss by much, but miss it does. (Click here for text of full review.)

A highly resistant bacterial infection is raging in the surgical intensive care unit, and patients are dying. To make matters worse, Lauras daughter is exposed to the bacteria and begins to show symptoms.

Desperate at this point, Laura calls her young friend, Dr. Stacy Jones, at the CDC in Atlanta. Stacy arrives in Tampa, unaware that a deadly plot is underway in Atlanta as a covert white supremacist cell plans an unthinkable attack on a massive scale.

The Laura Cardinal Mysteries by J. Carson Black

The Laura Cardinal Mysteries by J. Carson Black
Publisher: Breakaway Media

Laura Cardinal, a detective with the Arizona Department of Public Safety, troubleshoots homicide investigations in small towns where resources are scarce. She lives in a rented adobe house on a guest ranch in the desert. The ghost of her dead partner, Frank Entwistle, appears at the oddest moments — sometimes to help, and sometimes just to tell her how he would do it.

Everybody’s a critic.

Three mysteries are featured in this volume:

Darkness on the Edge of Town: When Laura investigates the murder of a fourteen-year-old girl left in a town’s park band shell, she knows immediately what she’s up against: a cunning sexual predator. But why is she plagued by the abduction of a schoolmate eighteen years earlier?

In a runaway case that propels Laura from a lavish Tucson estate to the secretive heart of a north Florida town, she must confront the ghosts of her own past. Then another child goes missing — and Laura must race the clock to find her.

Dark Side of the Moon: When a young couple on their honeymoon is found shot to death in a campground in Williams, Arizona, the consequences go far beyond a simple murder investigation. As the investigation unfolds, Laura uncovers a chilling portrait of the dark side of love. And when she learns of one victim’s ties to an underground organization called the Earth Warriors, she is plunged into a high-stakes conspiracy played out against the unforgiving backdrop of the Mojave Desert — where there are no second chances.

The Devil's Hour: In 1997, the disappearance of three young girls rocked the city of Tucson, Arizona. Eleven years later, one of those girls — Micaela Brashear — comes home, alive.

Detective Laura Cardinal worked homicide for Arizona DPS, but now she's been moved to the Open-Unsolved Unit. With a new job and a new partner who questions her every move, Laura pieces together Micaela's fragmented memories in the hope she will learn the whereabouts of the other two children.

When a man walking his dog finds the bones of a child in a shallow grave on the mountain above town, it becomes clear to Laura that Micaela was the lucky one.

But the killer isn't through yet, and after the fiery death of someone close to Laura, she realizes she faces an implacable enemy.

A Conversation with Elena Dorothy Bowman

Omnimystery News: Author Interview
with
Elena Dorothy Bowman

We are delighted to welcome novelist Elena Dorothy Bowman to Omnimystery News today.

Dorothy writes both science fiction and mystery novels; her most recent book is Catherine's Ring, a novel of suspense set in a small fictional town in the northeast corner of Massachusetts.

We recently had a chance to talk to the author about her books.

— ♦ —

Omnimystery News: You have written both series and stand-alone novels. What criteria do you use to decide whether a book will feature a series character or not?

Elena Dorothy Bowman
Photo provided courtesy of
Elena Dorothy Bowman

Elena Dorothy Bowman: It may sound strange, but it really isn't up to me. It is up to the characters in the novels and in the story itself which tells me whether it is more than a stand alone. Then there are the stand-alones that do not lend themselves to more than one book. It seems, at times, that the characters take over the story and decide which way it is going to go.

OMN: Your books span several genres. Do you think of them as genre-specific?

EDB: My novels are categorized by my publisher as science fiction, mystery, romance, the paranormal and historical fiction. What one's books are categorized as depends upon what the market will bear. Sometimes science fiction wins over, other times it is romance. And it goes without saying that most people like to be scared when it come to the paranormal.

OMN: Tell us something about Catherine's Ring that isn't mentioned in the publisher synopsis.

EDB: In the 18th Century, Joseph Barton, a young archeologist traveled through the Orient as part and parcel of his position as an Apprentice for the company he would someday become a partner in. In his travels through a mountain high up in the rarified air he comes upon an ancient one who appears to have been on this planet longer than one should have been. He engages the young traveler in conversation and barters for a bag of gems with whatever Joseph has on him and subsequently disappears. Before doing so, he reveals to the young man that the gems he now has in his possession are magical. But what the young man doesn't know is how these gems which are later set into two beautiful rings would impact the lives and future of Joseph Barton's descendants in a way far more than any on them could even dream.

OMN: How do you go about developing the plots and characters for your books?

EDB: I do not outline, but rather let the story develop as I write. As to the characters, I have a sheet, a biographical outline in which I describe each and everyone of my characters so that when they do something out of character, I know it's not correct. The synopsis comes after the novel is written. If I don't know which way the story is going to develop, I can't possibly write a synopsis of something that isn't written yet.

OMN: How do you fact-check your books?

EDB: When it comes to historical and factual references I spend a lot of time researching material that could be used in defining these references. My research does not only include the internet, but also books on the subject I am interested in exploring. Since I really enjoy researching a subject, I sometimes get caught up in the research and forget what I was doing in the first place.

OMN: What kinds of questions to you get from your readers?

EDB: The question most readers ask me is what prompted me to write the novels I do write. At most of the book signings I attend, more often than not, someone would come up to me and tell me that they have always wanted to write and had a good story to tell, what should they do. I encourage them to write what they have in mind and when they have completed it to send it out. All the publishers can do is say no, but there is always the one who will say yes. So go for it.

OMN: Do your reading interests also span the various genres you write in?

EDB: I read a lot, and there are many authors whose works I enjoy reading. Actually, I read many different genres, with the exception of crime novels. Historical, Mystery, Thrillers, Paranormal, Romance, Science Fiction are the genres I most like to read.

OMN: What is next for you?

EDB: I have recently submitted a manuscript to my publisher that is a collection of short and long stories, essays and poetry. Presently, I am working on two novels, one is science fiction the other is a mystery novel. I hope to complete both novels sometimes this year.
