Mr. E. Reviews End of Watch

Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña are absolutely brilliant in this found footage-style crime thriller. Peña seems more comfortable in his role than Gyllenhaal, who still makes the most of his. But there isn't much of a story here. It's a little disappointing that the director — who also wrote the screenplay — couldn't leverage the outstanding performances of the two leads into producing a better film overall.

Cinemystery: Adaptations of James Patterson's 1st Two Alex Cross Mysteries on a Double Feature DVD

When a new "Alex Cross" film was announced a couple of years ago, we were more than a little apprehensive about Tyler Perry taking on a role played so well in the late 1990s/early 2000s by Morgan Freeman. Turns out Tyler Perry was better than we expected — see Mr. E.'s review of the film here — but he still wasn't nearly as good as Morgan Freeman.

And now you have a chance to see for yourself. The original films in the series are being released tomorrow on a special Double Feature DVD.

Kiss the Girls / Along Came a Spider

Morgan Freeman stars as the Washington DC police detective and forensic psychologist in film adaptations of the first two books in the "Alex Cross" series by James Patterson.

Kiss the Girls, the second book in the series, was actually the first to be filmed, released theatrically in 1997.

Along Came a Spider, in which Alex Cross is introduced by Patterson, was the second book adapted, released in 2001.

Though both films have been released on DVD before, this Double Feature DVD set gives you the opportunity to own both, and at a very attractive price.

Nominees for the Inaugural Petrona Award Announced

The nominees (short list) for the inaugural Petrona Award for the Best Scandinavian Crime Novel of the Year have been announced by the award organizers.

Named in honor of Maxine Clarke, who blogged and reviewed as Petrona and was an expert on and champion of Scandinavian crime fiction, the winner of this new annual award for the best Scandinavian crime novel (translated into English) will be announced in May 2013 during CrimeFest.
