Lexile measure: HL710L | Ages 14-17

The day Louisiana teenager Rory Deveaux arrives in London marks a memorable occasion. For Rory, it's the start of a new life at a London boarding school. But for many, this will be remembered as the day a series of brutal murders broke out across the city, gruesome crimes mimicking the horrific Jack the Ripper in the autumn of 1888.

Soon "Rippermania" takes hold of modern-day London, and the police are left with few leads and no witnesses. Except one. Rory spotted the man police now believe to be the prime suspect. But she is the only one who saw him. Even her roommate, who was with her at the time, didn't notice the mysterious man. So why can only Rory see him? And more urgently, why has Rory become his next target?

Review: The Intercept by Dick Wolf

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of …

The Intercept by Dick Wolf. A Jeremy Fisk Thriller.

Review summary: This thriller is a chilling account of what could happen right here in the US. The plots and counterplots are remarkable and thought-provoking … if also rather convoluted and seemingly over-complicated. It's an intriguing start to a new series, and it will be interesting to see how it develops without becoming repetitive. (Click here for text of full review.)

Our rating: 3 of 5 stars

A Jeremy Fisk Thriller
William Morrow (December 2012)

Publisher synopsis: Days before the July Fourth holiday and the dedication of One World Trade Center at Ground Zero, an incident aboard a commercial jet flying over the Atlantic Ocean reminds everyone that vigilance is not a task to be taken lightly. But for iconoclastic NYPD detective Jeremy Fisk, it may also be a signal that there is much more to this case than the easy answer of this being just the work of another lone terrorist.

Fisk — assigned to the department's Intelligence Division, a well-funded antiterror unit modeled on the CIA — suspects that the event might also be a warning sign that another, potentially more extraordinary scheme has been set in motion. Fluent in Arabic and the ways of his opponents, Fisk is a rule breaker who follows his gut — even if it means defying those above him in the department's food chain. So when a passenger from the same plane, a Saudi Arabian national, disappears into the crowds of Manhattan, it's up to Fisk and his partner Krina Gersten to find him before the celebrations begin.

Watching each new lead fizzle, chasing shadows to dead ends, Fisk and Gersten quickly realize that their opponents are smarter and more agile than any they have ever faced. Extremely clever and seemingly invisible, they are able to exploit any security weak-ness and anticipate Fisk's every move … and time is running out.

MystereBooks: This Week's Update of Kindle Crime Fiction Priced $2.99 or Less (130223)

MystereBooks: Mystery, Suspense, and Thriller eBooks

Every month Amazon publishes a list of 100 Kindle books priced $3.99 or less. We thought we'd take that idea and improve on it, publishing a list of 100 Kindle mystery books priced $2.99 or less and updating it every week!

Here is our general criteria for selecting titles to include: books from major or specialty publishers of crime fiction and those written by authors familiar to us. There are far more than 100 to choose from, so we use our best judgment to narrow it down.

And just a reminder … as we add new titles, older ones are removed from the list. These books aren't likely to be repeated, so we encourage you to check in frequently!

A quick note: We're a little late in getting this weekly update published today because … drum roll … Amazon has a new list of titles in its semi-annual (or thereabouts) promotion, The Big Deal. We wanted to make sure that we didn't duplicate any titles here that you can find there … and we think we haven't, but one or two may have slipped by. (Here's a direct link to the 58 titles in the Mystery, Thriller & Suspense category of The Big Deal.)

Below are listed the new $2.99 or less titles we added either today or mentioned in separate posts earlier this week; click on the cover or title for more information or to purchase the Kindle edition.

Cinemystery: Patricia Highsmith's The Blunderer to be Adapted for Film

Cinemystery: Crime Novels Adapted for Film

Andy Goddard (Downton Abbey) will direct a film adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's 1954 novel The Blunderer. Susan Boyd, who optioned the book with her husband William, will write the screenplay.

"The Blunderer is one of those extremely special projects, complete with complicated Highsmithian characters and edge-of-your-seat tension," said Nick Meyer of Sierra Pictures, which will co-produce the film. "We are thrilled to have Andy at the helm of this one. He's a unique and skilled director with a great vision for the film."

The Blunderer was previously adapted in 1963 as the French thriller Le Meurtrier.

City lawyer Walter Stackhouse desperately needs to escape his marriage. His wife Clara is neurotic, vindictive and has been systematically alienating all of his friends. She is ruining his life, and it's small wonder then that he finds himself drawn to gentle, sympathetic Ellie. So when Clara jealously makes a failed suicide attempt, Walter realises just what life might be like without her.

Meanwhile, the story of a New York woman brutally murdered by her husband has been making headlines and firing Walter's imagination, and he suddenly sees an opportunity to put an end to his torment. But does he really have the courage to get rid of Clara? Or will he be too much of blunderer to see it through?

First published by Coward-McCann in 1954, this is the author's third novel.

A Song of Ice and Fire (3rd in series)

Of the five contenders for power, one is dead, another in disfavor, and still the wars rage as violently as ever, as alliances are made and broken.

Joffrey, of House Lannister, sits on the Iron Throne, the uneasy ruler of the land of the Seven Kingdoms. His most bitter rival, Lord Stannis, stands defeated and disgraced, the victim of the jealous sorceress who holds him in her evil thrall. But young Robb, of House Stark, still rules the North from the fortress of Riverrun. Robb plots against his despised Lannister enemies, even as they hold his sister hostage at King's Landing, the seat of the Iron Throne.

Meanwhile, making her way across a blood-drenched continent is the exiled queen, Daenerys, mistress of the only three dragons still left in the world. Filled with the stench of death and decay from the destructive dynastic war, Daenerys is gathering allies and strength for an assault on King's Landing, hoping to win back the crown she believes is rightfully hers.

But as opposing forces maneuver for the final titanic showdown, an army of barbaric wildlings bent on overwhelming the Seven Kingdoms arrives from the outermost line of civilization. In their vanguard is a horde of mythical Others — a supernatural army of the living dead whose animated corpses are unstoppable. And as the future of the land hangs in the balance, no one will rest in the quest for victory until the Seven Kingdoms have exploded in a veritable storm of swords.
