A Jared Kimberlain Thriller (1st)
Publisher: Open Road

A killer proves he can penetrate the world's finest security systems, and an undercover op must come out of retirement before the President enters the crosshairs …

$25,000 a week buys an impressive security system, and America's billionaires have the best they can get. Round-the-clock guards, electrified fences, and bulletproof glass protect their mansions — but they are no longer enough. Three of the nation's most powerful businessmen have died in seemingly impossible ways: one electrocuted, one blown up in his sleep, and the third hacked to death in an impenetrable room.

The security service chief contacts an old special-forces colleague, Jared Kimberlain, who quit the life when he lost his taste for clandestine ops. He's spent the last years trying to undo the wrongs he did when he lived without a conscience. Kimberlain doesn't care about the troubles of billionaires, but their security was as good the President's — and he could be next.

Review: The Case of the Superstar Scam by Lewis B. Montgomery

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of …

The Case of the Superstar Scam by Lewis B. Montgomery. The Milo & Jazz Mysteries.

Review summary: The investigative technique illustrated here for the young detectives is using a Venn diagram to help them sort out their clues, deciding which are important to the case and which are incidental. From this perspective, the mystery (and its solution) works, but there remain a couple of loose threads that aren't quite neatly tied up at the end. (Click here for text of full review.)

A Ben Kincard Legal Thriller (4th)
Publisher: Mysterious Press

While fly-fishing in Arkansas, Ben Kincaid lands an indefensible racist for a client …

For Ben Kincaid, the forests of Arkansas are a place to escape the hubbub of the courtroom and enjoy the outdoors. But for the thousands of Vietnamese refugees who came through this backwoods area in the mid-1970s, the Ouachita Mountains were a place to begin their new life in the United States. And for Tommy Vuong, an activist among the American-born Vietnamese, the woods are a place to die.

When Vuong is found stabbed through the neck beneath a burning cross, the logical suspect is Donald Vick, a member of a local white supremacist hate group who was seen fighting with Vuong the previous day. No lawyer in the county will take Vick's case, but Kincaid can't refuse. His new client is sullen, hateful, and demands to plead guilty — even though there's no evidence linking him to the crime scene. No matter what it takes, Kincaid will bring justice to the backwoods, whether the inhabitants like it or not.

Bad Lawyer by Stephen Solomita
Publisher: Mysterious Press

To keep his practice alive, a desperate lawyer takes a case defending a battered wife …

Just seven years after he left law school, Sid Kaplan was one of New York's top defense attorneys. With a glittering style and a hunger for competition, he was as fierce as they come. He was the go-to lawyer for Manhattan's toughest, flashiest criminals — until his mother's death wrecked his confidence. Suddenly, the only way to sustain his sixteen-hour days was a ceaseless stream of cocaine and scotch, a combination that ruined his life's work in a matter of months.

His only remaining employees are Caleb and Julia — a pair of ex-clients who don't mind working for irregular pay. Sid's latest bum case is Priscilla Sweet, a drug addict with priors, violent tendencies, and a dead husband whom she may or may not have killed in self-defense. She also has dangerous friends, which means that defending Prissy will make Sid famous again — either on the front page, or in the obituaries.

So Cold the River by Michael Koryta
A Novel of Suspense
Publisher: Little, Brown

It started with a beautiful woman and a challenge. As a gift for her husband, Alyssa Bradford approaches Eric Shaw to make a documentary about her father-in-law, Campbell Bradford, a 95-year-old billionaire whose past is wrapped in mystery. Eric grabs the job even though there are few clues to the man's past--just the name of his hometown and an antique water bottle he's kept his entire life.

In Bradford's hometown, Eric discovers an extraordinary history — a glorious domed hotel where movie stars, presidents, athletes, and mobsters once mingled, and hot springs whose miraculous mineral water cured everything from insomnia to malaria. Neglected for years, the resort has been restored to its former grandeur just in time for Eric's stay.

Just hours after his arrival, Eric experiences a frighteningly vivid vision. As the days pass, the frequency and intensity of his hallucinations increase and draw Eric deeper into the town's dark history. He discovers that something besides the hotel has been restored — a long-forgotten evil that will stop at nothing to regain its lost glory.

Telemystery: FX Orders The Bridge to Series

Telemystery Prime Time Crime: Mystery and Suspense on Television

FX Networks has given a 13-episode series order to The Bridge, an adaptation of the Danish/Swedish co-produced crime drama Broen/Bron.

In the original, a body is discovered — cut in half — in the middle of the Øresund Bridge, which connects Copenhagen in Denmark with Malmö in Sweden, requiring the cooperation of the two country's police jurisdictions to solve the crime. (Slight spoiler: it's actually two halves of different people.) In the FX version, a serial killer is operating on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border, with El Paso Detective Sonya Cross (Diane Kruger) working with her Juárez counterpart, Marco Ruiz (Demián Bichir). Meredith Stiehm and Elwood Reid wrote the pilot screenplay and will co-executive produce.

"For years networks having been trying develop a drama series set on the U.S.-Mexican border without any success," said FX president John Landgraf. "I'm thrilled to say that Meredith Stiehm and Elwood Reid have become the first to crack that creative code and they have done so magnificently. … This one is special. The setting, the writing, the direction, and the way it is brought to life by Demián Bichir, Diane Kruger and the rest of the cast makes for truly riveting drama."

Production is expected to begin in April with a Summer 2013 premiere date.

Please Welcome eBay Detective Author Charles A. Salter

Omnimystery News: Guest Author Post
by Charles A. Salter

We are delighted to welcome author Charles A. Salter as our guest.

Charles's first in a new series is The eBay Plot (Tate Publishing, December 2012 trade paperback and ebook formats) featuring a most unusual sleuth, the eBay detective.

Today Charles tells us about the backstory to the book.

— ♦ —

The eBay Plot is based on a true story from the era of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, one never revealed publicly until now. At the time, I was an active-duty Army officer at the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute (AFRRI) in Bethesda, Maryland, which is the primary military lab devoted to medical defense against nuclear and radiological weapons. I was the director of the Medical Effects of Ionizing Radiation course taught world-wide on U.S. and allied bases of all military services, as well as to the Public Health Service and first responders. Two months after terrorists destroyed the World Trade Towers in New York and also attacked the Pentagon on September 11, 2001, I and my team were invited by the director of the White House medical unit to come to the Old Executive Office building near the President's West Wing to brief the entire medical staff on the current nuclear/radiological threats and to train them how to deal with the medical effects.

Among many threats that I discussed was one related to eBay. Scientists at AFRRI had been screening radiation-related auctions on eBay to help prevent the spread of nuclear technology and radioactive materials among the public. The first one that alarmed us was the sale of a radioactive radium source that we calculated to be strong enough to kill several people if used by terrorists towards that end. The deeper we looked into online auctions related to weapons of mass destruction, the more concerned we became and ultimately turned over to the FBI the information we had gathered related to the radium auction. [I hasten to add that everything we saw was legal if purchased by scientists for legitimate purposes and not used for criminal or terrorist ends. But how would we know unless the right authorities were informed and followed up?]

As I attended those staff meetings and examined all the numerous auctions myself, some related to biological or chemical warfare as well, I realized this was a story screaming to be written and published in book form. For years I waited for the FBI to completely solve the mystery and connect all the dots, especially those related to the mailed anthrax attacks and the strange deaths of several key scientists who worked on medical defenses against biological warfare, but to no avail. I finally decided to go ahead and write the first draft in 2007, sticking to the known facts as much as possible and working out a dramatized, fictional ending which tied everything together in one grand plot. I waited years more, till 2011, before submitting the book to my publisher Tate, still hoping for the FBI investigation to produce a definitive resolution. To date, that has not occurred, though news reports over the years have revealed that the FBI had a “person of interest” and later a suspect in the anthrax case. Nothing was ever proven in court, though the authorities did seem focused primarily on scientists from nearby Fort Detrick in Frederick, Maryland (where I also worked for years before going to AFRRI).

Perhaps the facts and theories presented in this novel will lead to renewed interest and exposure of additional evidence which might finally solve the remaining pieces of the mystery. And wouldn't it be ironic if my fictionalized ending proved to be largely — or even partially — correct?

It's just another one of those "easy" VIP security assignments for ex-detective Ben Hood.

This job couldn't possibly land him in the crocodile infested Daintree Rainforest in Far North Queensland, attempting to rescue the kidnapped wife of a member of the Australian Federal Parliament, or get him tangled up with Islamic terrorists trying to launch a horrific attack inside Parliament House.

It just couldn't happen … not to Ben Hood!

All Booked Up
Terrie Curran
A Basil and Hortense Killingsley Mystery
Publisher: Terrie Curran

Only weeks ago, Basil Killingsley was looking at a rare old book in the Smedley Library. Now he is back to take another look, and the book is gone — gone from the shelves, gone from the computer listings, gone from the memories of everyone who works there.

Basil is as indefatigable as he is eccentric. He will not rest until he finds the book and proves to all concerned that he is not imagining things. But more than Basil's (considerable) ego is involved here: it is not just any book that is missing, but a 1495 Wynkyn de Worde edition of Ranulf Higden's Policronicon, a book of historical and literary significance that is crucial to Basil's research.

As Basil and his equally formidable wife, Hortense, are busy searching the Smedley for clues, members of the staff keep turning up murdered, more books mysteriously appear on the shelves, and a rich donor gets more than he bargained for in library operations.

But even the cleverest criminal is no match when the Killingsleys, with uncanny common sense and humor, apply their scholarly wits to matters odd and lethal.
