A Ty Hauck Thriller
William Morrow

Detective Ty Hauck plunges into what seems like a vicious case of retribution and follows the trail to a sinister gambling scheme at an upstate casino. Until Annie Fletcher, a young restaurateur in the midst of rebuilding her life, witnesses something she shouldn't have — and immediately runs to him with what she knows.

Suddenly, Hauck is pulled into a rising storm far greater than it first appeared — a storm wide enough to encompass corruption inside Greenwich's circle of wealthy and powerful citizens. And punishing enough to consume Hauck's own family, and tear brothers apart forever … if it doesn't kill them first.

A Thriller
Thomas & Mercer

As the chief forensic anthropologist for the FBI's Chicago field office, Christine Prusik has worked her fair share of bizarre cases. Yet this one trumps them all: a serial killer is strangling young women and dumping their bodies in the steep, forested ravines of southern Indiana.

With each victim, the killer leaves a calling card: a stone figurine carved like the spirit stones found among the primitive tribes of Papua New Guinea — the same tribes from whom Prusik narrowly escaped a decade earlier while doing field research. The similarity is eerie and, frankly, terrifying; Prusik still carries the scars from the tribesmen's attack.

But is the connection real? Or have the dark details of Prusik's nightmares finally wormed their way into her waking life?

Dead in the Water by Stuart Woods
A Stone Barrington Mystery (3rd)
Publisher: HarperCollins

Stone Barrington only wants a winter getaway from the chill of New York in the beautiful, tropical Caribbean paradise of St. Mark's. But what the lawyer and ex-cop gets instead is the chance to defend Allison Manning. The beautiful young woman stands accused of killing her rich husband on board their luxurious yacht and then burying him at sea.

Stone isn't exactly conversant with the island country's law, but this much is clear to him: Allison is being railroaded by the perverse sense of justice of a prosecutor who will do anything to stay in office. Donning the robe and wig of a British barrister, Stone does everything he can to save Allison — from publicizing the case all over the American press to conducting the kind of smart, tough investigation that money can't buy.

Just when he has the jury in the palm of his hands, a shocking reversal of fortune changes everything. And what was once a sure thing begins to look a lot like a death sentence.

Jacob Burns is getting used to the good life in Saratoga Springs. With a spot of money in the bank and a loving family at home, he's never been happier. Except that his drug-dealing neighbors' rowdy antics keep him up all night. Complaining to the cops doesn't bring satisfaction — possibly because the dealers' landlord is a cop himself!

Jacob and his fellow Saratogians are trying to clean up their down-and-dirty West Side neighborhood. But when the cop landlord — Jacob's personal nemesis — is murdered, Jacob becomes the prime suspect. Jacob ends up on the run from the law, with nobody he can truly count on except his own family — and a homeless nine-year-old boy who may hold the key to solving the murder.

Cinemystery: Production Update on Film Adaptation of Elmore Leonard's The Switch

Cinemystery: Crime Novels Adapted for Film

Way back in 2010 we first learned about the film adaptation of Elmore Leonard's crime novel The Switch. Production is finally underway in Connecticut with a possible release date later this year.

The Switch is a prequel to Rum Punch, which was adapted into the 1997 film Jackie Brown. The two main characters in that film were played by Samuel L. Jackson and Robert de Niro; in this new film, they will be played by Yaslin Bey and John Hawkes.

Here's the studio's official synopsis for the as yet untitled film:

Jennifer Aniston plays Margaret "Mickey" Dawson, a loving, if-not naive housewife whose husband, Frank Dawson, has been embezzling millions for years and keeping the cash in off-shore accounts without her knowledge. Two career criminals, Louis Gara and Ordell Robbie (played by John Hawkes and Yasiin Bey, respectively), catch wind of his scam and figure if they hold Mickey for ransom, Frank would have no choice but to pay up a million dollars. Except, what they don't plan on is that Frank's head over heels for his sex-kitten mistress, Melanie, and doesn't want his wife back. What follows is an unbelievable sequence of double crosses, plot twists and violence that could only come from the mind of Elmore Leonard.

Daniel Schechter is directing his own adapted screenplay.

Ordell Robbie and Louis Gara hit it off in prison, where they were both doing time for grand theft auto. Now that they're out, they're joining forces for one big score. The plan is to kidnap the wife of a wealthy Detroit developer and hold her for ransom.

But they didn't figure the lowlife husband wouldn't want his lady back. So it's time for Plan B and the opportunity to make a real killing — with the unlikely help of a beautiful, ticked-off housewife who's hungry for a large helping of sweet revenge.

A coveted prize has surfaced in New York drawing Celebrity Chef Cameron Kincaid into an 800-year-old war.

In 1208 the clandestine Rex Mundi began the Albigensian crusade in an effort to gain control of the treasure held by the Cathar. For thirty-six years the Languedoc region south of France was washed in blood. By 1244 the last of the Cathari were eradicated when the Château de Montségur finally fell. Though the Rex Mundi searched everywhere, the Cathari Treasure remained elusive.

After thwarting assassins in the library of his restaurant Le Dragon Vert Cameron, a suave former Legionnaire, vows to escort a young woman and her guardian to safety. Cameron learns from the two the secret Cathari faith and of the Rex Mundi that believe the women are key to the long sought Cathari Treasure.

Relentlessly pursued from the Le Dragon Vert in New York, through the streets of Boston, Montreal, Toronto, and Quebec, Cameron tires of fleeing. The Rex Mundi will ultimately wipe out the Cathari to get the treasure unless Cameron takes the battle to them, a confrontation to seal his fate or ensure the survival of the two women and a faith he does not fully understand.

A John Jordan Mystery
Publisher: Pulpwood Press

Florida prison chaplain John Jordan's search for the peace that has so long eluded him is interrupted by an unimaginable murder. Attempting to be a good man in a very bad place while also maintaining his shaky sobriety, John investigates the murder of the seven year-old adopted daughter of ex-con turned televangelist, Bobby Earl Caldwell, a murder committed in John's own locked office when Bobby Earl conducts a service in the Potter Correctional Institution chapel.

This unspeakable act, and the investigation that follows, will force John to confront his own fears and beliefs, causing this man of mercy to thirst for justice. Torn between the seemingly conflicting roles he's asked to assume — cop and cleric — John must struggle to figure out his identity as well as that of the killer's, but his past continues to haunt him in the form of troubling thoughts of failure and the resurfacing of his ex-wife, Susan.

Putting aside his distrust of the slick televangelist and his seductive wife, John must ignore intimidation and resist manipulation to find a killer among some very unusual suspects — including two murderers, a child molester, a teacher with something to hide, and Bobby Earl Caldwell himself whose very act of exposing his daughter to such risk causes John to suspect him from the very beginning.

Amid private crises and the torturous experiences of a thoughtful, sensitive man working in such a pitiless place, nothing short of death will end John's search for the person who killed little Nicole Caldwell. Uncovering the guilt, restoring the balance, John seeks pardon from the self-inflicted life sentence he's serving and exoneration from the burden of regret he bears.

Review: The Lawyer's Lawyer by James Sheehan

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of …

The Lawyer's Lawyer by James Sheehan. A Jack Tobin Legal Thriller.

Review summary: This is an exciting, smartly plotted, edge of your seat-type legal thriller. What works best are the series of conflicts that are set up, some quite unexpectedly, that both balance and play off each other, which are accompanied by several cleverly devised twists and turns that keep the reader invested in the outcome. A riveting novel, one not to be missed. (Click here for text of full review.)
