Horns by Joe Hill

Horns
Joe Hill
A Novel of Suspense
HarperCollins

At first Ig thought the horns were a hallucination, the product of a mind damaged by rage and grief. He had spent the last year in a lonely, private purgatory, following the death of his beloved, Merrin Williams, who was raped and murdered under inexplicable circumstances. A mental breakdown would have been the most natural thing in the world. But there was nothing natural about the horns, which were all too real.

Once the righteous Ig had enjoyed the life of the blessed: born into privilege, the second son of a renowned musician and younger brother of a rising late-night TV star, he had security, wealth, and a place in his community. Ig had it all, and more — he had Merrin and a love founded on shared daydreams, mutual daring, and unlikely midsummer magic.

But Merrin's death damned all that. The only suspect in the crime, Ig was never charged or tried. And he was never cleared. In the court of public opinion in Gideon, New Hampshire, Ig is and always will be guilty because his rich and connected parents pulled strings to make the investigation go away. Nothing Ig can do, nothing he can say, matters. Everyone, it seems, including God, has abandoned him. Everyone, that is, but the devil inside …

Now Ig is possessed of a terrible new power to go with his terrible new look — a macabre talent he intends to use to find the monster who killed Merrin and destroyed his life. Being good and praying for the best got him nowhere. It's time for a little revenge … It's time the devil had his due …

This novel is being adapted for film starring Daniel Radcliffe; use this link to see an early image of Radcliffe in character.

Review: Whispering Death by Garry Disher

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of …

Whispering Death by Garry Disher. A Hal Challis Mystery.

Review summary: This crime novel is, for the most part, a police procedural that spends much of the early going simply setting up a pair of crimes all the while introducing the large cast of characters. It's slow going at times. But one of the storylines is so riveting, one that gets better as it develops, that it is definitely worth putting up with the tedium of its companion plot just to see how it plays out. (Click here for text of full review.)

Our rating: 4 of 5 stars

Whispering Death Garry Disher

Whispering Death
Garry Disher
A Hal Challis Mystery
Soho Crime (December 2012)

Publisher synopsis: Hal Challis is in trouble at home and abroad: dressed down by the boss for speaking out about police budget cuts; missing his lover, Ellen Destry, who is overseas on a study tour. But there's plenty to keep his mind off his problems. A rapist in a police uniform stalks Challis's Peninsula beat, there is a serial armed robber headed in his direction and a home invasion that's a little too close to home. Not to mention a very clever, very mysterious female cat burglar who may or may not be planning something on Challis's patch.

Meanwhile, at the Waterloo Police Station, Challis finds his officers have their own issues. Scobie Sutton, still struggling with his wife's depression, seems to be headed for a career crisis; and something very interesting is going on between Constable Pam Murphy and Jeanne Schiff, the feisty young sergeant on assignment from the Sex Crimes Unit.

Review: The Buzzard Table by Margaret Maron

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of …

The Buzzard Table by Margaret Maron. A Deborah Knott Mystery.

Review summary: It's hard to know what to make of this murder mystery, which comes across as a collection of seemingly random subplots that unfold in a sequential manner (from the point of view of a variety of characters) and are loosely tied together at the end. Fans of the series will doubtlessly be entertained by all the goings-on, but new readers are advised to start with one of the earlier books; this one will simply overwhelm.
