MystereBooks: Ross Macdonald's First Two Detective Novels, Now Available as eBooks

MystereBooks: Mystery, Suspense and Thriller eBooks

Mysterious Press released today two of Ross Macdonald's earliest books, including his first published full-length novel, The Dark Tunnel.

Ross Macdonald was a pen name used by Kenneth Millar, and it is under his real name that he wrote the two books featured here … though Mysterious Press chose to use on the cover the name the author is best known as.

Millar was a graduate student at the University of Michigan when he wrote The Dark Tunnel, a stand-alone detective story that was published in 1944. Two years later Trouble Follows Me was published. It wasn't until 1949 that the author wrote his first "Lew Archer" mystery, The Moving Target, the lead character for which he is probably best known today.

On the home front, two wartime lovers reunite under a cloud of paranoia …

In 1937 Munich, an American must be careful when he smokes his pipe. Robert Branch, a careless academic, makes the mistake of lighting up when the Führer is about to begin a procession, and nearly gets pummeled for his mistake. Only the timely intervention of Ruth Esch, a flame-haired actress, saves him. So begins a month-long romance between East and West — a torrid affair that ends when the lovers make the mistake of defending a Jew, earning Branch a beating and Esch a trip to a concentration camp.

Six years later, Esch escapes to Vichy and makes her way to Detroit. To her surprise, Branch is waiting for her. He is a professor, working for the war effort, and his paranoia about a spy inside the Motor City war board sours their reunion. Once again, a dangerous net is encircling these lovers — a reminder that, in this war, love always comes second to death.

In the last days of World War II, a sailor discovers a transcontinental conspiracy …

It is February 1945, and the war in the Pacific is nearing its climax. In Hawaii on his way to a new post, US Navy ensign Sam Drake stumbles across the girl of his dreams. Mary is a disc jockey, with a voice that's famous across the islands for playing late night jazz that no young lover can resist. Before he can follow this modern siren home, they go to check on Mary's coworker Sue — but that lovely young lady will never spin another record.

They find her strung up and dangling outside the window of a bathroom, her face twisted into an ugly mask. The police call it suicide, but Sam is not so sure. Few beautiful women, even suicidal ones, are willing to be so hideous in death. Looking into Sue's past, he finds another corpse — and a dangerous conspiracy that stretches all the way back to his Motor City home.

Cinemystery: James Franco to Direct, Star in Film Adaptation of James Ellroy's American Tabloid

Cinemystery: Crime Novels Adapted for Film

James Franco tells MTV today that he will direct and star in a film adaptation of crime novelist James Ellroy's American Tabloid.

"We're going to do American Tabloid by James Ellroy," Franco told Josh Horowitz. "It's not all put together yet," he cautioned. "It's still early. You're getting the scoop."

Set in the years prior to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, the story follows the lives of three men, all law enforcement officers in one capacity or another, who are drawn together as the events of November 1963 are set into motion.

Howard Hughes is dodging subpoenas and digging up Kennedy dirt. And Castro is mopping up the bloody aftermath of his new communist nation.

In the thick of it: FBI men Kemper Boyd and Ward Littell. They work every side of the street, jerking the chains of made men, street scum, and celebrities alike, while Pete Bondurant, ex-rogue cop, freelance enforcer, troubleshooter, and troublemaker, has the conscience to louse it all up.

Mob bosses, politicos, snitches, psychos, fall guys, and femmes fatale. They're mixing up a molotov cocktail guaranteed to end the country's innocence with a bang. Dig that crazy beat: it's America's heart racing out of control …

Please Welcome Author and Golf Professional Keith Gockenbach

Omnimystery News: Guest Author Post
by Keith Gockenbach

We are delighted to welcome author and golf professional Keith Gockenbach as our guest.

Keith's first mystery, Power Fade (South Nine Publishing, November 2012 trade paperback and ebook formats), features professional golfer and amateur sleuth Roy Gilbert.

Today Keith talks to Roy about his recent adventure. And he is giving two of our readers a chance to win a copy of the book; details below.

Keith: What was the most frightening part of the book for you?

Keith Gockenbach

Keith Gockenbach

Roy: Realizing that I was all alone in the Everglades swamp and that darkness was approaching quickly. I grew up on a ranch outside of Houston, Texas, but I'd never been much of an outdoorsman. There I was, a professional golfer, slogging around in the muck, searching for my friend John, and unable to find him. The sun was going down and I couldn't remember a thing about the last few minutes of our sightseeing flight over South Florida. One minute John was flying us in his small Cessna, the next I was waking up next to the wreckage in the swamp. All I could think about was alligators, water moccasins, and mosquitoes.

Keith: After you escaped the swamp and the threats from the helicopter, what was the most frustrating thing about the story?

Roy: You would never let me know what was really happening. John was missing and presumed dead, but I could never be sure, since I couldn't remember the last minutes of the flight. Maybe John was still alive and hiding from the people who had tried to kill us. I was a last-minute passenger on John's recreational Cessna. It was his plane that crashed, and the helicopter that hunted me in the Everglades was the piloted by the same black-clad man who had frightened John at the airport before we left.

Keith: Anything else?

Roy: Yes. Someone kept trying to kill me. I didn't know who, or why, and you left me very few clues. I sure didn't know anything much about John's life in Miami, just that he played piano at a swank nightclub in South Beach. I met several people who were willing to help, but some of them acted very suspiciously — seeming to know more than they were telling. All I wanted was to help the authorities find out who had presumably killed John and get back to playing golf, but you wouldn't let me.

Keith: Who were the most interesting people you met along the way?

Roy: Well, the two young women were certainly beautiful. Crystal, the raven-haired marine biologist who helped me escape the swamp was a bit of a mystery. She was willing to do anything to help me escape, but once we were out of the swamp, she seemed happy to be rid of me. It was obvious she regarded me as a spoiled golfer. Marianne, John's fiancée was a big surprise. I didn't know John was engaged, but he'd sure picked well. She had long blond hair and was rich. Her father was the overprotective type and one of the people I didn't much trust. Both of the women had those hypnotic green eyes that I can't resist.

Keith: How do you like the way it all turned out?

Roy: Don't ruin it for the readers, Keith. You certainly kept me in suspense the entire book, let your readers enjoy the same feeling. Since you had me tell the story, they'll experience it the same way I did. It was scary, frustrating, and I was certainly ill-prepared for the threats you presented me. And since you gave scant clues along the way, I had to stumble on my own through a lot of new people and new situations. On top of that, things in my golfing life weren't going very well either. I'm sure I owe you a lot for making me the star of your story, but if it's all the same to you, let me rest for a while before you put me through all that again.

Keith: Don't worry, Roy. You may show again eventually, but in my next two books the stars are a caddy and a journalist, respectively. I do want to thank you for being such a good protagonist Roy. You did a great job.

Roy: Thanks, Keith.

Power Fade by Keith Gockenbach

Power Fade
Keith Gockenbach

When the game turns deadly …

Professional golfer Roy Gilbert wakes, dazed and defenseless, in the mangrove swamp of the Everglades. Across the bay hangs the wreckage of the small Cessna his friend John piloted on their sightseeing trip that afternoon. Roy has no memory of the crash, and John is nowhere to be found.

Roy does remember the intimidating chopper pilot he and John encountered at the airport prior to their flight. When that same helicopter appears over the wreckage, Roy hides in the trees. Thus begins a three-day chase through the Everglades.

With the help of research biologist Crystal McNair, the head of security for the tour, and Special Agent Brockman of the FBI, Roy identifies a list of dangerous, drug-related suspects in John's disappearance. Balancing his search for answers with his commitments to tournament golf, Roy narrowly escapes further attempts on his life as the tour moves from Miami to Orlando.

Working with Brick and other law-enforcement officials outside, Nick must guide a special team through the locked-down facility and help them save as many lives as possible, while Jeff Pepper uses every negotiating trick up his sleeve to see that he and his fellow captives make it out alive.

Film Synopsis (from the studio): It all begins in the steamy rural backwater of Moat County, Florida, where things have been done the same way for decades, yet change is bubbling beneath the surface. Boyish Jack Jansen (Zac Efron), son of the local newspaper publisher, has just returned home after being kicked out of college, only to take the lowly job of paperboy. But that too changes when his idolized journalist brother Ward (Matthew McConaughey) comes to town from Miami on the trail of a story that could make his career. Bringing in tow his hotshot writing partner Yardley (David Oyelowo) and the alluring death-row groupie Charlotte Bless (Nicole Kidman), Ward plans to prove that an innocent man has been railroaded on his way to the electric chair.

With Jack as their driver, the quartet arranges to meet Hillary Van Wetter (John Cusack), the seedy alligator hunter hastily convicted of killing the local sheriff, at the prison. But what erupts between them all is a tangled web of sexual tension, mixed motives and shadowy facts that will set off not only a search for the truth but a chain reaction of passion and violence. Observing it all is Jack's only real confidante — the disregarded family maid Anita — who watches in dismay as his innocence is turned inside out.
