Tomorrow, Friday September 21st, Haven returns in an episode we think is simply titled "301" — but this could also simply stand for third season, episode one. We don't know much about the episode, other than Nathan (Lucas Bryant) and Duke (Eric Balfour) search for Audrey (Emily Rose), who was abducted at the end of last season. Watch a promo for the new season below. And for those who have never seen Haven before, check out a rather creepy — but in a good way! — introduction to the series below the promo.

Either she's off on another drunken escapade or the disappearance is something much more frightening. What begins as an ordinary day's work for Detective Billy Able quickly grows into a complex spider's web of tragedy, mystery, suspicion, and sordid secrets including a few of Billy's own. With the help of Mercy Snow, the estranged sister of the missing socialite, Billy follows a twisted trail of human frailty and corruption to disturbing truths that undermine everything he thought he knew about himself and the people he loves.

New Poster for Political Thriller Argo

Argo (October 2012)

A new poster for the political thriller Argo has been released by the studio (right; click for larger image). The tagline: "The movie was fake. The mission was real."

Based on true events, Argo chronicles the life-or-death covert operation to rescue six Americans, which unfolded behind the scenes of the Iran hostage crisis — the truth of which was unknown by the public for decades.

On November 4, 1979, as the Iranian revolution reaches its boiling point, militants storm the U.S. embassy in Tehran, taking 52 Americans hostage. But, in the midst of the chaos, six Americans manage to slip away and find refuge in the home of the Canadian ambassador. Knowing it is only a matter of time before the six are found out and likely killed, a CIA "exfiltration" specialist named Tony Mendez (Ben Affleck, who also wrote and directed the film) comes up with a risky plan to get them safely out of the country. A plan so incredible, it could only happen in the movies.

Argo opens in theaters October 12th. We've previously featured the trailer for the film (below), but we don't think there is a more recent one.

Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries to Air on UKTV's Alibi Channel

Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries

A little over a year ago we learned that Australia's ABC was adapting Kerry Greenwood's "Phyrne Fisher" mysteries for television. Titled Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, thirteen episodes aired earlier this year, with the series being renewed for a second season.

We're fans of the books — we've read and reviewed eight of them so far — and had hoped that the series might find its way to our shores, and while that hasn't happened quite yet, it is a bit closer. The series was pre-sold internationally to a number of countries (not including the US), and most recently UKTV's Alibi channel has acquired it.

Essie Davis stars as Phryne Fisher, a glamorous and thoroughly modern woman — and sleuth — of the 1920s. She sashays through the back lanes and jazz clubs of Melbourne, fighting injustice with her pearl-handled pistol and her dagger sharp wit. The Australian network restricts viewing of the series trailers on YouTube in the US, but you can use this link to see a "programming slate" for 2012; Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries is featured from about the 1:50 mark to the 2:30 mark.

There are at present 18 books in the series, published in the US by Poisoned Pen Press. The first, Cocaine Blues, is currently (as of the date and time of this post) free to download.

Cocaine Blues by Kerry Greenwood

Cocaine Blues
Kerry Greenwood
A Phyrne Fisher Mystery (1st in series)

The London season is in full fling at the end of the 1920s, but the Honorable Phryne Fisher — she of the green-grey eyes, diamant garters and outfits that should not be sprung suddenly on those of nervous dispositions — is rapidly tiring of the tedium of arranging flowers, making polite conversations with retired colonels, and dancing with weak-chinned men. Instead, Phryne decides it might be rather amusing to try her hand at being a lady detective in Melbourne, Australia.

Almost immediately from the time she books into the Windsor Hotel, Phryne is embroiled in mystery: poisoned wives, cocaine smuggling rings, corrupt cops and communism — not to mention erotic encounters with the beautiful Russian dancer, Sasha de Lisse — until her adventure reaches its steamy end in the Turkish baths of Little Lonsdale Street.

Please Welcome Jackson Burnett

Omnimystery News: Guest Author Post
by Jackson Burnett

We are delighted to welcome debut novelist Jackson Burnett as our guest.

He describes his new legal mystery, The Past Never Ends (Deadly Niche Press, July 2012 trade paperback and ebook formats), as "James Lee Burke meets Erle Stanley Gardner somewhere in Oklahoma."

Today Jackson tells us how he attempted to follow the structure of the old "Perry Mason" novels in his book. And, as a bonus, the Kindle edition of The Past Never Ends is free to download today and tomorrow!

— ◊ —

Perry Mason novels are still great mysteries to read because:

1. The books read easy and take little time to get through.
2. A good, puzzling whodunit resolves itself by the last chapter.
3. The stories usually turn on a legitimate legal issue.
4. The courtroom scenes were obviously written by someone who had actually been in court.
5. Justice is always served.

Perry Mason mysteries disappoint readers today because:

1. No one ever really stands up in a courtroom and confesses to murder.
2. While Perry Mason's pretrial antics are never technically illegal or unethical, today he'd spend so much time defending ethic charges and responding to grand jury investigations, he'd never have time to defend anyone in court.
3. Neither the legal system nor the law ever work as neatly as they do in a Perry Mason mystery.

The Past Never Ends, my recently published legal mystery, attempts to preserve the best of the Perry Mason novels for the generations that have grown more sophisticated; a result, in part, of having watched the O.J. Simpson and Casey Anthony trials as they happened.

Set in the American Southwest in the days before 9/11, Attorney Chester Morgan agrees to assist a young man in obtaining the incident report about the death of a young man's only friend. The friend's name is Tanya Everly, a sex worker from the wrong side of the river. The public record, though, is sealed by order of the Chief of Police. Morgan finds himself on a quest to learn the truth of Tanya Everly's death, a journey that takes him into the seamy corners of sex for sale, the crooked connections between rich oilmen and public servants, and the troubled places of Morgan's own soul.

The Past Never Ends is longer than the typical Perry Mason novel. The whodunit and the prose are both more complex. Still, I tried to be faithful to the form Erle Stanley Gardner gave us when he created the magnificent Perry Mason.

Read The Past Never Ends and let me know whether you agree.

Jackson Burnett is the name used by a writer, lawyer, and amateur fiddle player who lives in a Southwest American city. He is a fan of the roller derby, Italian opera, and old-time country and roots music.

Besides mysteries, Burnett writes short literary fiction and essays.

This stand-alone is by the author of the "Bo Bradley" and "Blue McCarron" mystery series.

Only the flame from a curious candleholder illuminated the murdered corpse of Karl Knock on a bitterly cold Massachusetts night twenty years in the past. When the efforts of local, state and federal investigators failed to cast more light on the crime than the little candle did, the case gathered dust, unsolved and forgotten.

But when horror novelist Finn Ryan gets an invitation to dinner from a beautiful but eccentric and reclusive colleague, Tally Serzak, a web of danger sends its first, tentative filaments from that candlelit room. And nothing will ever be the same.

Because Finn has secrets. So does Tally. And so does Newton, MA, Police Detective Warren Yost, who found Knock's body on that cold morning so long ago. Now, on the eve of retirement, Yost decides to solve the old murder and go out with a last hurrah.

As Finn's involvement with the strange Tally reaches an intensity that has him running into walls, he begins to see similarities between himself and his own characters. He's in a horror novel, except this one is real. There are no ghosts, no zombies or vampires. There is only Tally and an unfolding story Finn doesn't want to see, but can't ignore. As she knew he wouldn't.

Warren Yost sees the story as well, but can't assemble its puzzle until Finn provides a last piece that will lead to a final, and deadly, resolution.

Telemystery: HBO Options The Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death by Corinne May Botz

Telemystery: Mystery and Suspense on Television

In stark contrast to the other telemystery news of the day, we're fascinated by the idea of developing a series around The Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death, which has been optioned by the cable network HBO.

Guillermo del Toro will executive produce a pilot to be written by Sara Gran. The proposed series will center on a 1950s housewife, who becomes obsessed with solving brutal crimes. Read more about the book from which the storyline will be developed below.

The Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death by Corinne May Botz

The Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death
Corinne May Botz

This book offers readers an extraordinary glimpse into the mind of a master criminal investigator. Frances Glessner Lee, a wealthy grandmother, founded the Department of Legal Medicine at Harvard in 1936 and was later appointed captain in the New Hampshire police. In the 1940s and 1950s she built dollhouse crime scenes based on real cases in order to train detectives to assess visual evidence. Still used in forensic training today, the eighteen Nutshell dioramas, on a scale of 1:12, display an astounding level of detail: pencils write, window shades move, whistles blow, and clues to the crimes are revealed to those who study the scenes carefully.

Corinne May Botz's lush color photographs lure viewers into every crevice of Frances Lee's models and breathe life into these deadly miniatures, which present the dark side of domestic life, unveiling tales of prostitution, alcoholism, and adultery. The accompanying line drawings, specially prepared for this volume, highlight the noteworthy forensic evidence in each case. Botz's introductory essay, which draws on archival research and interviews with Lee's family and police colleagues, presents a captivating portrait of Lee.
