A George Sueño and Ernie Bascom Mystery
Soho Crime (July 2012)

Publisher synopsis: Seoul, early 1970s: US Army Sergeant George Sueño is on a mission of extreme importance to the South Korean government, as well as the US Army. Kim Il-Sung has vowed to reunite North and South Korea into one country before he hands control of the government over to his son, which means North Korea is planning to cross the DMZ and overpower the American-allied South Korean government. Sueño's mission is to prevent this by sneaking into North Korea and obtaining an ancient map detailing the network of secret tunnels that run underneath the DMZ. To do so, he will have to go undercover and infiltrate the North Korean Communist inner sanctum.

Aware of the often dubious nature of the US Military's tactics, Sueño is skeptical about his assignment. But he has other things on his mind. The keeper of the map is Doc Yong, a former lover of Sueño's who was forced to flee South Korea the year before—and she has a son. Before they can be happily reunited, the plan falls to pieces, and Sueño is captured. Can he rely on the enigmatic Hero Kang, his sole contact in the hostile country? Will the lovely Rhee Mi-Sook, the leader of the North Korean secret police, be too much to handle? And who are the mysterious group of women known as the Joy Brigade?

MystereBooks: This Week's Update of Kindle Crime Fiction Priced $2.99 or Less (120804)

MystereBooks: Mystery, Suspense, and Thriller eBooks

Every month Amazon publishes a list of 100 Kindle books priced $3.99 or less. We thought we'd take that idea and improve on it, publishing a list of 100 Kindle mystery books priced $2.99 or less and updating it every week!

Here is our general criteria for selecting titles to include: books from major or specialty publishers of crime fiction and those written by authors familiar to us. There are far more than 100 to choose from, so we use our best judgment to narrow it down.

And just a reminder … as we add new titles, older ones are removed from the list. These books aren't likely to be repeated, so we encourage you to check in frequently!

A couple quick notes before we get to today's rather lengthy update.

• Amazon published a new selection of $3.99 or less Kindle books during this past week. We've tried to avoid any duplication on our list, but one or two titles may have slipped by.

Poisoned Pen Press continues to delight mystery fans by releasing first in series titles for 99 cents (free on iTunes), with the second in series priced at $2.99. We've added all six titles announced this week to our list. But we should note that some previously announced titles (from early June) have slipped off our list, so we encourage you to regularly use this link to see what's available from the publisher.

Below are listed the new $2.99 or less titles we added today; click on the cover or title for more information or to purchase the Kindle edition.

Kill City USA by Warren Roberts

Kill City USA
Warren Roberts
A Joe Milo Mystery
Publisher: Mean Streets Press

It's South Beach, Florida, summertime, and the living's uneasy for laconic Brit private eye Joe Milo. The local Yardies have a contract on him, he's rattled a few urns at a mobster's crematory and funeral home, and he's also managed to irritate an Irish Republican group who are running arms to terrorists. They all have one wish in common — for Joe to get out of town pronto.

Few things interest Milo as much as a sexy woman packing a loaded gun, so enter Cza, a Miami Cuban FBI Special Agent who thinks he should be locked up. Plus there's a Technicolor supporting cast of villains, lovers, liars, killers, cheats, bloodsuckers and miscreant clowns, with morality and political correctness as a fools distraction, and dialogue you could dance to. Soon psychopathic wiseguy Ernie Moresco sends Milo an empty hourglass to be loaded with his ashes, to put the frighteners on him and his enigmatic sidekick Jonah.

While Milo enjoys the elegiac quality of the threat, people around him are tending to die in the mayhem of this wittily tangled crime-noir, as Kill City's about to live up to it's name …

The Bell of Girardius by Warren Roberts

The Bell of Girardius
Warren Roberts
A Joe Milo Mystery
Publisher: Mean Streets Press

Private Eye Joe Milo's hangover wasn't improved by the clients waiting at his London office. The Russian madam's sister was missing — sucked into a supernatural swamp by Satanists and the Forces of Darkness, Olga says. The claimed familial link to Rasputin didn't help his mood either. Nor did Tanya, her ex-Spetsnaz minder with a Soviet attitude.

The first corpse turns up in Paris. He finds it. Actually — he pulled the trigger. The next victim, ritually mutilated, turns up in a garden square near his apartment, addressed to him. The cops aren't impressed by Milo's alibi, with an ex-Police Commissioner the Sergeant in the Occult Order, the Temple of Baphomet (the ungodly idol worshipped by the medieval Knights Templar). The Sergeant's buddy, Grigory Zeltin, is its Grand Master. And he needs a special bell cast for the upcoming carnal rite.

Even then things might have been OK, but Milo falls for Zeltin's daughter. And Joe and his enigmatic sidekick Jonah are about to enter the jaws of hell in this deliciously dark novel.

Warren Roberts
A Joe Milo Mystery
Publisher: Mean Streets Press

When private eye Joe Milo comes to after being sandbagged in his office, the seductive Cleo arrives to help him recover his pride and convinces him to take on her case. What she doesn't tell him is that she'd been a baglady for the Russian Mob and for a crooked London banker, and she also sidelines as a cage fighter under the moniker The Whore of Babylon, either of which might have warned Milo off.

But being a sucker for a femme fatale, Milo and his sidekick Jonah are soon entangled with a corrupt British MI6 agent, plus an ex-KGB sociopath who runs a criminal empire out of Monaco on behalf of Russia's FSB.

After these two government sponsored crooks combine forces against Joe and Jonah in this cleverly plotted, gripping and sexy thriller, the action transits from London to an explosive showdown in the South of France.

Review: Grandad, There's a Head on the Beach by Colin Cotterill

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of …

Grandad, There's a Head on the Beach by Colin Cotterill. A Jimm Juree Mystery.

Review summary: Jimm reports on all manner of odd activities — such as finding a head on the beach — in a down-to-earth, matter-of-fact style in this second mystery of the series. But the story itself is far closer to "slice of life" than "novel of suspense", entertaining more for how Jimm goes about solving her collection of puzzles than for the puzzles themselves. A Jimm Juree Mystery
Minotaur Books (June 2012)

Publisher synopsis: When Jimm Juree’s mother sold the family house and invested in a rundown "holiday camp" at the southern end of Thailand on the Gulf of Siam, the family had little choice but to follow. Jimm Juree, who was well on her way to achieving her goal of becoming the primary crime reporter for the major daily newspaper in Chiang Mai, is less than thrilled to have lost her job as a reporter and to be stuck in the middle of nowhere where little of interest happens. So it is with mixed feelings that she greets the news that a head has washed up on the beach. It’s tragic, of course, but this could be the sort of sensational murder that would get her a byline in a major daily and keep her toehold on her journalism career. Now all she has to do is find out who was murdered, and why.
