Artscape, the First Ike Schwartz Mystery by Frederick Ramsay, Now at a Special eBook Price

Artscape by Frederick Ramsay

Poisoned Pen Press just e-mailed us to let us know that the first mystery in the "Ike Schwartz" series, Artscape by Frederick Ramsay, is now available in Kindle format for just 99 cents; it's free from iTunes (for a limited time only; see vendor buttons below). We'll be adding this title together with the second in the series in our weekly update of Kindle Mysteries for $2.99 or less this coming Saturday.

Ike Schwartz thought he could return to his hometown and ditch the demons that pursue him. More than anything, he wanted to blot out the pain and anger that came when his wife of less than a month was gunned down in a CIA foul-up. So he buried himself as sheriff in rural Picketsville, Virginia, a community indistinguishable from any of the hundreds of small towns that hang like beads on Interstate 81 running from Pennsylvania down to Georgia.
Aside from its Civil War history, Picketsville's only real claim to fame is Callend College, a private women's school located just within its corporate limits. The college is notable, in turn, for housing one half of the billion dollar Dillon art collection, carefully secured in an underground bunker originally built in the late 1950s as a super bomb shelter.

It's bad news for both Dr. Ruth Harris, the newly hired president of the college, and for a shadowy group whose services have been contracted by Middle Eastern fanatics — The New Jihad — when the collection is scheduled to be removed to New York. The plan is to steal the half billion dollars worth of fine art and statuary, and ransom it back for millions.

With the closure of the facility imminent, the operation must be moved forward, which, in turn, creates unanticipated risks and problems. And everyone dismisses Ike Schwartz as a stereotypical rural sheriff. He is, however, a man with uncommon skills, a tough hide, and a notable past …

New Japanese Poster for The Hunger Games

The Hunger Games (Japanese Poster, September 2012)

The Hunger Games may have been held in March here in the US — and most of the rest of the world — but in Japan they aren't scheduled until September 28th.

To promote the film, the studio has released a Japanese poster (right; click for larger image).

There isn't enough katakana on the poster for us to read, so we're not able to provide much more information about what's exactly being said. We can pick out ハ ンガーゲーム but of course that's already helpfully translated below the text.

This should be the last major country to see the film. Catching Fire — the sequel — opens in the US in November 2013 with the final film adaptation of the trilogy, Mockingjay, spanning two films being released, respectively, in November 2014 and November 2015.

Prime Suspect by Lynda La Plante, eBook Now Just 99 Cents

Prime Suspect by Lynda La Plante

HarperCollins has lowered the price of the police procedural ebook Prime Suspect by Lynda La Plante to just 99 cents (for a limited time only).

This crime novel introduces Detective Chief Inspector Jane Tennison, a character brilliantly portrayed by Helen Mirren in the television series adaptation of the novel.

The moment Tennison takes over Scotland Yard's investigation into the death of sex worker Della Mornay, two grim facts become immediately clear to her. First, that the constabulary's old boy club is determined to hinder, harass, and undermine the new female DCI at every turn. And second, that their murder victim isn't Della Mornay.

Now the police are a step behind, and a madman is loose on the streets of London. To apprehend the criminal stalking women through the city's shadows, Tennison will have to steel herself against the hostility of her fellow officers and conceal her own mounting obsession with breaking through the glass ceiling of the station house — even as department politics, a crumbling relationship, and a wickedly elusive prime suspect threaten her very existence.

To Faithfully Execute by Gordon Ryan
A Pug Connor Thriller
Publisher: Pegasus Publishing

This is the third (and most recently published) thriller in this series.

About To Faithfully Execute (from the publisher): Election Day is looming and the fate of a united America lies in the hands of its citizens. States are threatening to secede, politicians have their own agendas, and as rumors of treason rumble throughout the land, Pug Connor has a decision to make. He can continue to serve the country he loves and watch it break apart, or he can take matters into his own hands and change the course of history. He hates the man he is forced to become, but with stakes this high, he forges on, regardless the cost. His growing love for Senator Rachel McKenzie--and his fear regarding the possible loss of her respect--make his decisions much harder.

Pug's deputy director, Carlos Castro, faces no such conflict. He fully understands his nature: he is a stone-cold, instinctive killer, single-handedly seeking to rid the world of evil one terrorist at a time.

Swedish Poster for Total Recall

Total Recall (Swedish Poster, 2012)

Here is a slightly different take on the sci-fi action thriller Total Recall: the Swedish poster for the film (right; click for larger image), more character-centric though not really conveying much about the overall premise. The poster's tagline: "Is it real. Is it recall."

A remake (of sorts) of the 1990 film of the same title, itself based (somewhat) on the short story "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale" by Philip K. Dick, the film welcomes you to Rekall, the company that can turn your dreams into real memories. For a factory worker named Douglas Quaid (Colin Farrell), even though he's got a beautiful wife (Kate Beckinsale) who he loves, the mind-trip sounds like the perfect vacation from his frustrating life — real memories of life as a super-spy might be just what he needs. But when the procedure goes horribly wrong, Quaid becomes a hunted man. Finding himself on the run from the police — controlled by Chancellor Cohaagen (Bryan Cranston), the leader of the free world — Quaid teams up with a rebel fighter (Jessica Biel) to find the head of the underground resistance (Bill Nighy) and stop Cohaagen. The line between fantasy and reality gets blurred and the fate of his world hangs in the balance as Quaid discovers his true identity, his true love, and his true fate.

Directed by Len Wiseman from a screenplay by Mark Bomback, James Vanderbilt, and Kurt Wimmer, Total Recall opens in US theaters August 3rd, 2012.
