Red Lights Opens in Limited Release Friday, July 13th

Red Lights. Limited opening in theaters July 13, 2012.

Red Lights (2012)

Veteran paranormal researchers Dr. Margaret Matheson (Sigourney Weaver) and Tom Buckley (Cillian Murphy) debunk fraudulent claims of ghost whispering, faith healing and other psychic phenomena by detecting what Matheson calls "red lights", the subtle tricks behind every staged supernatural occurrence. But when the legendary blind psychic Simon Silver (Robert De Niro) comes out of retirement after 30 years, his once-fearless adversary Matheson warns Buckley to back off, fearing reprisal from the powerful Silver. Determined to discredit Silver, Buckley and his star student use every tool at their disposal to uncover the truth behind the charismatic, spoon-bending, mind reader. But Buckley is forced to reexamine his own core beliefs as his quest builds to an explosive conclusion.

Written and directed by Rodrigo Cortés.

Running time: 113 minutes. Rated R for language and some violence.

Three Crime Novels Now Available for $2.99 from Down & Out Books

Down & Out Books

Earlier this morning we featured Bob Truluck's debut mystery Street Level as one of our daily free mysterebooks. The winner of the 1999 St. Martin's Press/PWA contest for Best Private Eye Novel, it introduced PI Duncan Sloane and later went on to win the Shamus Award for Best First PI Novel in 2001.

The second mystery in this series, Saw Red, was published in 2003 and recently reissued in ebook format by Down & Out Books … which has now lowered the price to just $2.99.

Truluck wrote a stand-alone in 2007, The Art of Redemption, of which Publishers Weekly said, "Truluck's pulpy prose is spot on, and his vision and voice remain among the most original in a genre too often reduced to formula." It, too, is now available from Down & Out Books as an ebook for $2.99.

Finally, the publisher is featuring a "Tarantino-esque book that's just a fun trip from Tijuana to Sacramento", The Perpetrators by Gary Phillips, originally published in 2002 and long out of print. The ebook format of this book is also $2.99 for a limited time.

Ann Littlewood: The Zoo-dunit Mysteries

Omnimystery News: Guest Author Post

We are thrilled to welcome crime novelist Ann Littlewood as our guest to Omnimystery News.

Ann is the author of the Iris Oakley "Zoo" mysteries, the third entry of which is Endangered (Poisoned Pen Press, July 2012 Hardcover, Trade Paperback, and eBook editions).

Today Ann whimsically tells us where baby plots come from: Under a cabbage leaf! But of course! And … she is giving three of our readers a chance to win an autographed copy of her new book; details below.

— ◊ —

A tiny brown seed transforms into a big leafy plant. That's one metaphor for how a novel might evolve: start with an idea and grow it on. Another metaphor: the overflowing junk drawer gets organized. Here's a list of seeds or safety pins that evolved into my third zoo mystery, Endangered, starring animal keeper Iris Oakley.

Ann Littlewood

• On a visit to Oregon Zoo, I was drafted into holding baby western pond turtles while each received a microchip in the hind end. These rare animals were released into the wild carrying this key to their early history, so that biologists could track them individually.

• My father-in-law is a contrarian investor with an unshakable faith in precious metals as a depression-proof investment.

Washington State's "barefoot bandit" keeps popping up in the news.

• I read The Last Tortoise by Craig B. Stanford (recommended!).

• A cousin visited and told me about her adventures as director of an animal shelter.

• I drank too much one night and had an unexpected but intensely passionate affair with a handsome man in a hotel.

Okay, okay, I made that last one up. But you see how it works. Some plots accrete, accumulate, assort rather than spring Venus-like fully grown from a seashell. I imagine other writers hew closely to a real-world incident that actually happened to them, but no roman à clef for me — my life isn't nearly as dramatic as that of my characters. I make stuff up. I do it by pawing through my mental junk drawer and by growing seeds into stories in my head.

Did this semi-random process result in a twisty, compelling plot? Check into Endangered, a tale of smuggled tortoises; an isolated and violent family; a mysterious girl — murdered; and an outraged zoo keeper who sorts it out, at no little peril to herself. Let me know what you think.

Ann Littlewood was a keeper for the Portland Zoo (now Oregon Zoo) for twelve years, working primarily in the nursery but also with primates, felines, and in all other areas of the park. She later worked as a technical writer and business analyst before turning to a life of crime fiction. You can read more about her and her books on her website, ZooMysteries.com.

About Endangered:

Zoo keeper Iris Oakley is sent to a remote farm in Washington State to rescue exotic animals after a drug bust. Instead of pets, she finds smuggled parrots and tortoises destined for sale to unscrupulous or unsuspecting collectors. The zoo's facilities are full, and she ends up with two macaws shrieking in her basement. The marijuana grow operation and the meth lab are the cops' problem. The smuggling side-line is hers. An outraged Iris is determined to break the criminal pipeline that snatches rare animals from the wild and leaves them neglected in old barns.

Then she discovers a woman who escaped the bust — dead. Iris has stumbled onto a violent crime, something far too dangerous for a widow with a young son. But it's too late to untangle herself. Brothers from the farm, both murder suspects, invade her home, demanding information she doesn't have.

Iris flees with her child, but soon her only option is to go on the offensive. People she counts on are not who they claim to be. A friend is shot during a break-in at the zoo and may not survive.

Hunting for the brothers, Iris sorts through baffling clues and trips over secrets old and new. Why steal an ordinary drinking glass? Why do the brothers think she knows where their father's fortune is hidden? Could the noisy parrots be hiding crucial information in plain sight? She realizes a key piece is missing, but finding it means confronting a determined killer.

For a chance to win a signed copy of Endangered, courtesy of the author, visit Mystery Book Contests, click on the "Ann Littlewood: Zoo Mysteries" contest link, enter your name, e-mail address, and this code — 5761 — for a chance to win! (One entry per person; contest ends July 18th, 2012.)

Street Level by Bob Truluck

Street Level by Bob Truluck
A Duncan Sloan Mystery
Publisher: Down and Out Books

This novel was the winner of the 1999 St. Martin's Press/PWA Best First Private Eye Novel Contest.

About Street Level (from the publisher): Private detective Duncan Sloan has just handed back a five thousand-dollar check meant as advance payment on a job. The wealthy prospective client wants Sloan to find a woman with an eyeball tattooed on her bottom. All he knows is the tattoo, that she's very young, white and probably somewhere in or near Orlando, Florida, Sloan's hometown. Thanks but no thanks; that's not enough. But when the five grand reappears in Sloan's mailbox, he uses it for a Costa Rican vacation and never mind the job.

Pike, however tracks him down. When he explains the assignment, Sloan finds it bizarre enough to say "yes." Isaac Pike is the only son of a top-ranked tycoon. He is also gay. Because he genuinely wants to be a father, he has deposited sperm with a reputable clinic while he searches for a suitable mother. But a paroled convict working at the clinic steals the sperm, impregnates a teenager with it, and blackmails Pike — send money or we abort the child.

Although Pike's idea of a suitable mother is not quite a waif from an Orlando trailer park, he is decent enough to be genuinely concerned about both mother and child.

Sloan pursues the thief and his buddies and, he hopes, the girl, through the Florida city's sad neighborhoods and outlying cheap motels, calling on his drug-enhanced informers and a contact in the police. Getting closer brings him to the mangled bodies of the young mother-to-be's relatives, and closer to his own danger as well. On he goes — Duncan Sloan may be a reluctant detective, but when he's wound up he's hard to stop.

Publisher: Thomas & Mercer

About Extended Family (from the publisher): Dr. Harmon Gettys is the perfect man: tall, dark, handsome, and brilliant. He'd seemingly be a catch for any woman—especially those who desire an apparently charmed offspring. But Gettys uses his seed for murder, to create a legacy of violence.

For Fire Marshal Greymon Gift, gruesome burn-related murders are nothing new. But a sudden spike in his jurisdiction has Gift on high alert. When an FBI investigation links multiple arson scenes to the deceased Dr. Gettys, Gift is pulled even deeper into a case that's hot enough to start a conflagration. He knows that even if Gettys were alive, such an assortment of violent crimes could never be committed by just one man. So who is spreading these horrors from coast to coast?

Gift and FBI Agent Rose Cleary partner up to stop the growing number of savagely murdered victims, but can they uncover the truth before they wind up on the list of the dead? Extended Family offers a thrilling look into the heart of darkness. Horrifying and suspenseful, the novel explores the idea that evil can be passed like a torch from one generation to the next. A&E Orders Pilot for Adaptation of Danish Crime Drama, Those Who Kill

Den som dræber (Those Who Kill, Danish crime drama, 2011)

Earlier this year A&E announced it had acquired the US development rights to the 5-episode Danish crime drama Den som dræber (Those Who Kill), which aired on TV2 during the Spring of 2011. (When the series was not renewed, a 6th episode was filmed to provide an ending, which was shown theatrically.)

Now we're learning that the cable network has ordered a pilot for the series. Glen Morgan will write the screenplay.

Den som dræber is based on an original concept by Danish crime novelist Elsebeth Egholm. The overall storyline follows a fictitious unit within Copenhagen Police that specializes in investigating serial murders.

You can watch the trailer for the series (in Danish) below, which gives a sense of what the show is about.
